Hi Christy,
We just returned from Glasgow because If Christy won’t come to the Netherlands this year…The Netherlands will come to Christy 🙂
And what better venue to enjoy a show than Barrowlands. We’ve heard and read the reviews, yet it was still some sort of overwhelming.
Such a different experience to the gigs in Carré in Amsterdam where everybody is seated, all dressed up and where you’re nearly executed when you dare to sing along. We will certainly be back at the Ballroom!!
Actually, we didn’t even miss the weekend to Amsterdam 😉
….Come all you dreamers…..
Christy's reply
Glasgow….. a great City to visit…an atmosphere like no other….lots of emotion, curves, pointed sharp corners, laughter, love ,pain, history, bloody religions, football, music, poetry, great fish and chips ( bring your own salt and vinegar) singers, bands, mighty River, good doss houses,
“As I went out by Glasgow City
Nancy Whisky I chanced to smell,
I went in sat down beside her
7 long years I loved her well”
Amsterdam has its own rare and unique qualities…not to be missed
“Queen Beatrix rides her bike,Rembrandt is hangin down in The Rijk
Ajax, Heineken, Van Gogh, The Gargle and The Ganjee
Monday mornin half cracked, we dived into the Kaisergracht
they fished us out ,hosed us down, put us on the plane to Dublin……….Home to The mammy again
O The Weekend that we spent in Amsterdam”
Christy, hope you’re home safe. Saw you in Hamilton last week, having previously seen you in Edinburgh and in 3 venues in Glasgow. Hope that you enjoyed Hamilton and that you’ll come back. A couple of highlights for me were Before The Deluge (a long time since I saw you do that one) and Blantyre Explosion (first time I’ve heard you do it live, and very poignant considering the venue – these things shouldn’t ever be forgotten).
I also thought the latest addition – Cathal(?) from Pomeroy, really added to the show.
I thought you sounded as good as ever.
p.s. one of your contributors, ConnorD from Donegal had asked about getting a copy of Come All Ye Dreamers dvd. I’m pretty sure I had 2 copies at one point, and I’m happy to search through my dusty boxes and send it to him if he’s still looking.
Christy's reply
John, Good to hear from you…Hamilton was a great start to our mini-tour…lovely venue and great listeners…one or two odd “clappers” but no problem…
Cathal Hayden is bringing a lot of new nuances to our sound,,,, he is settling in very well and extending his contribution with every passing gig… his is a rare ability, not many of our leading trad players have a natural affinity with songs, Cathal has been playing on songs for years..
It was a pleasure to sing “Blantyre”…I recorded it 30 years ago but never gigged it until this tour….loved singin “Broomielaw” in Barras..is it a well known song in Glasgow??
re DVD enquiry…let me know if you find one and I’ll try and connect you with Connor
Hi Christy thought I wld just tell how sad it makes me that when I attend ur gigs I can’t sing along with you because of others attending the gig, all I listen to is ur music since I was sixteen pretty much know every word to every song, I usually see u at the barrow land where people constantly saying shhh all the way through the gig pointless, i attended the concert hall on Friday night I was threatened by some maniac for singing along with you shocking, It makes me happy when I sing ur songs, I really don’t understand y people sld be treated in such a hateful manner for wanting to sing along with you. I
Christy's reply
From where I was singing on Friday night there was lovely audience participation in the Concert Hall…on certain songs hundreds of voices were singing along, on others it seemed as if every one in the Hall was singing….I am sorry to read what you write James…If I were “threatened by shocking maniacs in a hateful manner” it would certainly put me off….
hi christy we have tickets got for your upcoming gig in the lakeside hotel and leisure centre in ballina co tipperary on july the 8th and we were just wandering if you are going to be there for a second nite we are really looking forward to the gig the last time we were at one of your gigs was the premier hall in thurlas te
Christy's reply
I have not heard anything yet about a second night in The Lakeside….should the invitation be extended I will be delighted to accept..keep an eye on the gig page at this site
The Concert hall gig was mighty ….. but the barrowlands Christy , the barrowlands…. there’s hardly any words to fully do it justice…..awesome , amazing, absorbing, addictive, acoustic….. and that’s only the words starting with A !!
Ger was in the seats at the back of the hall ( in good company) and she was amazed at the quality of the sound during the show……. talk about filling a room. We are so glad to have been there to experience it all. Thanks to every one that makes it possible.
Christy's reply
Morra Marty…relieved to read that Ger was sitting in the bleachers ( a most salubrious VIP area!!) I was worried that perhaps she had tired of hearing the ballads or run away with aone of our kilted brethern !!…thanks for your feedback and support…coming up your neck of the woods soon… I must practice
“then I’d roll my Mary in my arms
in the Town of sweet Dungloe” ( for Letterkenny ! )
Thanks Christy and your band of jolly minstrels for a cracking night oop North. We took the overnight bus from Victoria Coach station on Friday night and then we took the plane back this morning for midday kickoff. Have to say we gave it our best but Oldham knew how to hold em. Anyways, 8 hours on a bus is surprisingly conducive to the pilgrimage. And what a glorious performance. Some fine additions in band members and fine additions in the set list. So I’ll leave you with the sound of ‘Oh it’s crying time again you’re gonna leave me….’ 🙂 xx from us.
Christy's reply
Ye played a stormer…thought you were coming over the barrier a few times but your girls held you back ..shine on…
Hi Christy, sitting outside the cottage in Emlagharan (the edge of Aran), Ballyconneely (townland of Conneeleys:
Hear the Atlantic seethe and swell
And hear the lonely chapel bell
God save their souls and mind them well
Tomas and Sean Conneely.
A beautiful and poignant song. The twelve bens are magestic…Belfast is a world away!
Christy's reply
But a wonderful world that always calls us back….Emlagharan sounds beautiful
Christy great gig in the barras, that crowd would probably have any other musician running for cover. that’s the first time I’ve seen you in a long time. The last time was the Glasgow pavilion I think it was the pavilion and hamish imlach was supporting you. That too was a great night. Good to see Cathal Hayden playing with you. What a musician. Thanks
Christy's reply
Cathal is a wonderful player and he settles in more with every passing gig….I did try “running for cover” the first time I played the Barras but the entire audience ran with me !! We’ve been closely connected ever since
Thanks for “giving it the lash” at the Barras last night Christy, it was an amazing experience that me and my husband will remember forever. You are a legend!
To Jod81’s earlier comment, I’m a great, great neice of Mickey, he was my maternal grandmother’s uncle. I was shaking and my heart was thumping when you played the song, a great tribute. Thanks again for that.
Happy for you to pass on my email to Jod81’s or vice versa. I may be able to help.
Christy's reply
Fair Play Maire…when I set up this forum 10 years ago, my primary hope was that it might connect people who had a common interest. Your wonderful gesture of friendship to “Jod 81” warms the heart….I hope he responds !
Its Monday morning now and I am back home…but Sat night at the Barras still reverberates…..I finally got to sing “The Bleacher Lassie O’ Kelvinhaugh” in Glasgow ! I hoped it would not offend Clydeside ears to hear a classic Glasgow song sung in a Kildare dialect… I learned that song from Mick Moloney back in 1964….its one I seldom sing but that may change after last Sat night.
Hi Christy,
Just back in the old Sod”I’m a Bog Man it’s where I come from “.
Words cannot describe how good the last two nights have been in Glasgow;;;;; from the grandeur of the Concert Hall to the wonderful, wonderful madness of the Barras. Two magnificent sets received with gusto by the adoring listeners. Thanks to you, the “Orchestra ” and all the crew who made it all happen, we are indeed privileged to share in the experience.
Ride on,
Patsy
Christy's reply
Hey Patsy, it was a lovely moment when I looked across the front row at Barrowlands…right along the barrier were loyal, long haul listeners who have been sharing this journey for manys the year…I spotted faces from New York, Tralee,Holland, Belfast, Kildare,Arklow, Donegal, Derry,Cork, Moate as well as many other regulars whom I’ve grown to recognise across the years…. The Scottish Songsters made us all feel so welcome to the East End of their wonderful City…
We had 4 great gigs.Myself, Paddy, Michael, Declan, Jim, Cathal, David, Dickon, Johnny, Geoff, Andy and Vickie left Glasgow with a great feeling of “a job” well done…..the folk at Regular Music Promotions paved the way and the production crews at all 4 venues left no stone unturned with their co-operative efforts..
None of this could take place without the audience who came out in such great numbers, who created the air we need to perform, whose hard end cash keeps the entire operation afloat ….Thank You
hi, i’m looking for any info you may have on Mickey McIlhatton ? i think he may have been a relation but can’t find very much info – can you help ? please ?
Christy's reply
there are relatives of Mickey still kickin about but I have neither names nor contacts…anyone out there got any leads ?
I’ll make some enquiries, if anything comes up Ill let you know..
What a day what a night, it doesn’t get any better loved every minute, best gig yet at Mags Mcgivers, the band rocked and the crowd was brilliant.
Haste Ye Back
Christy's reply
Sun Morn.
Gerry,Thats the job done…heading out the door now for Cairnryan, on to the Ferry, over to Belfast and down the road to Home Sweet Home. 4 great nights on our mini-tour of Scotland. You listeners topped it off last night in Mags Maguire’s.In 52 years on the road I’ve never heard such audience singing….I’ll carry that memory with me for manys the day…..from your full-throated singing ye then listened so intently to “Broomielaw” “Time has Come” “Spancilhill” and”Blantyre”…we exited the stage after 2 hours fully spent and utterly content…..sitting in the dressing room we listened as ye sang your way down the stairs, heading off out into the night , leaving the Old Ballroom to echo the spirit of all you dreamers…
many listeners travelled from Ireland, and further afield, to sample the Barrowland Experience…. I hope the venue survives the grasp of those hungry developers who wish to knock it to the ground…long may the rafters roar there..
thats it Lads and Lassies…Thank you all for the welcome and the memory…x
Christy- the cambuslang lads are missing one this evening. A friend of ours Jim Kerr passed away just before Christmas to rj bastard that is cancer and he religiously was at your barras shows. In light of today’s hammering, Could you dedicate joxer to his memory, it would be much appreciated. Hail hail.
Well Christy, I hope you’ve enjoyed the Scottish tour as much as I have, lots of special moments and you’re in for a treat tonight to finish it off!
Hope the team have packed the shin guards, I think it could be even livelier than usual as spirits are high in the green half of the city. You had a couple of gobshites in the concert hall, but the non-gobshites might end up outnumbered tonight! I kid, the worst that will happen is that you’ll be invited to join a few choruses of The Lonesome Boatman, Here I Am Lord/Inspiral Carpets (depending on which version of the Brendan Rodgers anthem is on the go) or a nice rendition of Grace that has been taken to the hearts of the faithful of late.
In seriousness I’d like to say that it’s been a privilege to witness the level of musicianship on display this tour. I’ve seen you many times and always think the last can’t be topped but the new line up really has taken some of the songs to a new level. Big credit to the new boys, they’re a joy to watch. Then Declan, sublime as always, I thought he was going to take off during “No Time” the other night. And the lynchpin of it all, bringing everything and everyone in the room together, yourself – a mesmerising command of the songs, the voice and the listeners. Enjoy every moment of tonight, they’re always over before you know it and the next ones never soon enough (or maybe that’s just me!).
Christy's reply
backstage now as the Listeners gather..always come here with an open mind..no other gig in my world challenges like Barrowland….have not played any stand-up gigs since the last visit here…..but despite everything that happens here there is always a generosity of communal spirit…no matter how loud and rauceous it becomes the crowd will respond to quiet moments…will get involved with the spirit of the song…there are a moments in the Barrowland Film “Come all you Dreamers” that always catch me, certain audience shots … some of my Barrowland memories are among the most precious….things have happened here that went on to become part of certain songs….at no other venue in the world has there been applause during songs at the end of particular verses…also beautiful spontaneous response to instrumental breaks that carry the night…all of this with respect to the players and the songs
of course there have been exceptions…on a few occasions drunkness has almost prevailed but, so far, has never taken over the night…dont know how many Barrowlands I got left in me
Lest it be the last one I’m gonna give it the lash tonight….
Heading over for the dreamers, what about singing Barrowlands for Tommy Gemmell, a Lisbon lion who would have frequented the ballroom in its hay day. Tommy Gemmell. RIP
Have a great gig Christy.
Christy's reply
what a mighty man was Tommy..saw him play 3 times in Parkhead when I first came here 50 years ago..can still see him moving up the field with great control always fully aware of what lay ahead
Hey christy, what can I say, in Glasgow to see ye perform a storm once again. Myself and my good wife booked our honeymoon around your barrowlands concert in Oct 15, what a show. Here we go again, can’t wait 🙂 ps enjoyed your duet and show in Tullamore a few weeks ago:) #legend❤️Galteemountainboy 🙂

Back again, so soon.I married my husband Ruairidh 20 years ago this year (the horse had bolted and we closed the stable door). Our wedding song was the voyage. In that time a lot of water has passed , we’ve battering a few storms, motored some calm shores and generally had the wind in our sails – what an amazing voyage

lets hope the 41st does the trick Joe….getting into the zone here …
Looking forward to the Barowlands tonight. Very special occasion, first concert as a family and introducing my 3 children (Roisin, Fionnlagh and Sinead) to your live performance. My son went to the Fleadh (Ennis) and endeded up having an impromptu jam with your brother in a music shop(someone had to tell the then 15 year old, who he was). Despite that,(he could have been anyone) but the time given was so much appreciated and meant so much to my son. Thanks to you Christy, the Moore family and Declan for sharing your talents.

Hope the Barrowland treats you well tonight.
