Hi Christy
My wife and I look forward to travelling to ‘the Barrowlands’ Sat. Night. Whistle stop tour for us as middle of lambing here amidst the mud and sleet. Very much enjoyed our excursion to the Waterfront last autumn – glad you have made it to these shores this time around. ‘You may travel far, far from your own native home’
John-Angus (9) and Edward Patrick (5) send their best but are a bit cross they cant go – soon their day will come
Best wishes
Christy's reply
Abandoning your wee lambs and wains suggests pure devotion to song….we will strive to please in that Church of Céilí, we will leap from the Cliffs of Dooneen …. (they are all of 8 feet high) we will throw ourselves into the mosh pit of Barrowlands, seek to serenade the expectant throng….no better venue in the world to round of our wee tour of Scotia…
“the lassies of The Broomielaw on their Cuban Heels are dancing
Heres our lady O’ the Clyde ‘n there goes Jinky Johnson”
Hi Christy,
Can’t wait to see you play at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Last time I saw you was in Drogheda with my dad so we can’t wait to see you again! Would love if you played Beeswing as it’s my favourite song.
Thanks again, Bethany 🙂
Christy's reply
I reckon you got it Bethany….love that big rich roomy groovy Concert Hall..Grand piano in the dressing room…its a high-brow kinda joint but the staff dont have their heads up their arses like some highbrow joints I could mention…great acoustics too….
“She was a rare thing, fine as a Beeswing,
so fine a breath of wind could blow her away”…( Richard Thompson)
Is there any chance you will play over here in the US Christy?
Christy's reply
Dear Pat X
I’d love to but circumstances make it highly unlikely….had some great tours there in the 80s and 90s….hit Sausalito after the Great American, Germantown in Philly, Carnegie Hall highly over rated, The Iron Horse and Culver City, Lansdowne in The Bronx and Abbey in The Windy City, Atlanta was Dandy and The Birchmere was Folkie Cool, Symphony Space and The Town Hall in New York City,….lots of good memories….who knows Patex, anything could happen…got an offer that I almost could’nt refuse a few years back but I funked it…10 days on a Cruise ship was more then I could handle….(Spike Milligan’s cure for seasickness “go stand under a tree”) …..I still think about the breakfast bars over there…those little piles of streaky smoked rashers, the first time I ordered pastrami on rye, had’nt got a cluewhat I was gettin into but loved the sound of it….first time in JFK and the taxi driver says “you wanna I should pop the trunk”….
went to a Baseball game once
saw Charlton Heston at LAX
heard Odetta and Pete Seeger in NY City
Tony Linnane in Brooklyn
McGann’s in Boston was my best USA gig experience
Tony McGann rest in peace, never forgotten
Hi Christy I kinda guess you won’t read this until much later but once again any chance of johnny jump up tonight lol iv gotta try .G
Christy's reply
Hey Graeme…every chance!!…an hour to go here backstage..tuning up the vocals, getting nervous which brings on the adrenaline…great to access the energy in an organic and sober fashion !….a lot simpler then the old methods !!
me and the Boys are gonna rehearse Johnny Jump right now ..
Hope ye have a good night…..
Christy. Looking forward to seeing you again in the Pavilion in Dun Laoghaire!
I have an odd request to ask you. My good friend Geoffrey Sheehan is turning 21 in a couple of weeks. Geoffrey and I are massive fans and have been to see you numerous times.
I was wondering if there was any way you could send record a video wishing Geoffrey a Happy 21st Birthday and send it on. It really would make his day! It’d be some surprise and he’d be over the moon.
Mise le Meas,
Eoin Galligan
Christy's reply
recording a video is a simple everyday task for many people but not for all ….such a request is simply beyond my reach…However I am delighted to hereby wish Geoffrey a happy 21st Birthday… that is the best that I can do
….if he’s at the Pav maybe I can give him a blast of the Old DTs
Hi Christy.
“We all are clowns ” is yours if you want it, if not , I’ll understand. Hope everything is going well in scotland.
Yours sincerely ,
Seamus noone.
Christy's reply
Thank you for sharing your song Seamus…I enjoyed listening…at this time I am working on a batch of songs already in place and I am unable to consider any further material ….very cold here in Scotland but the audiences are giving us a warm welcome
Christy after 30 years listening to you on CD and DVD I finally got to see you in Hamilton last night with some friends. I was not disappointed – what a show! You were in fine voice. A fantastic 2 hours and an amazing set list. All that was missing was Black is the Colour. Then you did it in the encore! I left a very happy chappy. ☺ The only drawback was the balcony rythm section. What a pack of muppets. A Derryman now living in Stirling # I wish I was back home ….
Ah Christy, what a fantastic show you put on last night. Loved the setlist from start to finish and would loved to hear a few others but you would have been there until next week if you played everything we all wanted to hear.
Loved McIlhatton and the reference to Glenravel as that’s where my mum was from.
Hopefully you’ll get a live album or possibly a DVD out in the near future to keep me going until the next time.
Ride On my Bhoy and enjoy the rest of your Scottish dates. I’m sure the Barras will be jumping on Saturday.
Christy's reply
Currently assembling a bunch of live tracks gleaned from the last year of gigs..should be ready by the Autumn..having a good time listening back
Hi Christy hope all is well in Scotland remember face the puck out and go for ground hurling but watch out for the Shinty boys they have woeful big sticks
I was reading the post yesterday and with too much time on my hands I went searching and found a poster for Mary of Dunloe presents Christy
Mon Tues August 1 and 2 in the Dome you’re looking well on it it doesn’t give the year but Jim Donohue gave it to me back in the day so I reckon it was late 80s
Anyway give it stick in Scotland remember it was in you in training
Christy's reply
I would’nt doubt you Ignatius…
and fair play to you, you did’nt feel the need to go blowing about Galway’s recent achievements in both Hurling and Football….a trait not always apparent in followers from other counties….our Lilies have never had much opportunity to gloat…. should that time ever come ,I will take a leaf from your book !…
I hear that Ed Sheeran shot a video in O’Connor’s of Salthill..he picked the right spot for the job…I still remember singing the Jug Of Punch and Rosin The Bow there in the Summer of 1963…me with my two chords and Christy O’Connor tinkling the ivories…
Heading for Edinburgh tonight…played Hamilton last night..beautiful venue with a great audience
Shine On Iggy…..
Hi Christy,
Bought my mum Heather and me tickets to come see you at the Usher Hall on the 26th of April for mothers day.
When I was small she used to always sing Bright Blue Rose to me as a lullaby and I loved it.
Now I know this might seem cheeky but is there anyway you could sing this for us and for her to get a little mention. It would really mean alot!
Thank you!
Jade
Christy's reply
Lets see what way the wind blows in Edinburgh tonight..its always a beautiful song to sing but needs a certain atmosphere….if the air is right we’ll give it a whirl
Hi Christy
Ready to conquer Schotland?
Hilary gave me the Council I must see you once in Barrowland, but it’s going to be next year.
Last night Bob Dylan was in Antwerp. No ordinary man for sure!
The venue was fortunately not too big. Sometimes it seemed we were in a little jazzpub. He didn’t speek a word to us and the security was sometimes very disturbing because he ordered them he didn’t wanted not to see one light from a cellphone or he would leave! He sounded like a scratching crow .
That’s Bob, but he was grand.
I don’t understand why he sings covers, he’s got such a big repertoire from his own.
Believe it or not but I was sitting next to a lovely Irish young man who’s parents came from Cork and moved to Belgium. God nows why? Chocolate maybe?
I have understood that your youngest son is also living in Belgium?
Anyway have a great Scottish tour and see you in June.
Chris
Christy's reply
all good here in Scotland.we’re gonna hear Bob in Dublin soon, we’ll keep following his furrow….I’d certainly favour The Great Dylan Songbook over The Great American Songbook but we gotta take whatever way Bob’s cookie crumbles.,……
you ask about the Cork lad sitting next to you at Bob… from what Ive heard, there may be a movement of Cork people determined to introduce Hurling,Drisheens,Road-Bowling,Fíanna Fáil,Maggie Barry,John Spillane and Mick Flannery into Belgium….and all of ’em are pure divvils for the choclate
… hope you & the boys on tour packed your Arran jumpers, it’s Baltic in Edinburgh. Christy if The Voyage isn’t on your playlist a shout out to Kieran from Armagh & Emer from Sligo – we’d be made up. ?
Christy's reply
will try and do the song but the “shout outs” department has had to close down due to pressure of demands.hope ye have a good night..just rolling on the thermals in anticipation of winter conditions
Hi Christy
Singing Mary from dungloe with Daniel o Donnell in carndonagh in the 1980s must have been a dream come true!. Unfortunately carndonagh carnival is no longer active. Instead we have the Easter Parade in its place. It is epitimized in the song My lovely Irish rose, written by Fred Kearney, a native of carndonagh
“Oh Carn fair, beyond compare
I never will forget
Oh Carn fair beyond compare,
I think I see it yet,
We sailed away from Moville bay,
Just at the evenings close
And I waved my hand to the dear old land, my lovely Irish rose”.
This song is well associated with John Donovan, from instrahuill, off the Malin head coast. He was a bandleader, popular In the 1940s. It has also been recorded by Bridie Gallagher, ” The girl from Donegal”
Christy's reply
Bridie Gallagher, I went to hear her sing many years ago….back when she had a hit with “The Boys from the County Armagh”
Did she ever perform with Fintan Stanley?
I think Carndonagh Carnival Marquee was the first seven-pole in Ireland….
I sang with Daniel twice and met him 4 times in all…sound man
Díodh am ar dóigh agat in Alban a Christy! Lucky Scotland, lucky Hamilton… as you voyage from the head of the Clyde valley and meander along the Leith (a silver thread in a green ribbon) to Edinburgh… back on the Clyde to Glasgow…you’ll need a quare few barrows to shift your gear across the city! I’m having a break from earthing spuds and planting out raised beds. This time accompanied by Hamish Imlach’s Black is the colour: I go to the Clyde for to mourn and weep…Mary
Christy's reply
’tis cowled here on The Clyde but we’ll soon be skitterin on out to Hamilton where the academics will soon put a bit of heat into us….lovely to see Hamish getting a mention, his family are coming to the gig in Glasgow on Friday night…always great to see them…I spent manys the night with them back in the 60s….out in Motherwell in my sleeping bag and the youngsters ticklin me toes on their way to school ….
Welcome back to Scotland Christy! Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow in the Usher Hall. Christy if you can, could you play The Voyage for my husband & I – that was our first dance at our wedding 11 years ago and our night out to see you is for our anniversary. We got front row seats!
Hi Christy
Huge favour to ask……I broke my leg 3 weeks ago and my partner Pete Clark, a Co Antrim bhoy, has been an absolute star putting up with and sorting things out for me. Ordinary Man is a special song in our world and it would be really great if you could give him a mention if you sing it on Saturday at the Barrowland. He’ll probably break my other leg for being so soppy but he’ll be chuffed really ?
Hope you have a blast in Scotland!
Lynda
Christy's reply
does’nt feel soppy this end Lynda.we’ll try and give your Antrim boy a leg up before he trundles back to Troon
