We are all still recovering from my 65th Birthday yesterday. The highlight of which was your show at The Landmark. I have never heard you play or sing better. Now I know how it feels to watch you with a mainly Irish audience. It was very special. It was worth travelling over from England to be there. A special thank you for playing a song for me. As you could hear I was extactic to hear The Cliffs of Duneen as a birthday tribute. There were tears in my eyes as you played Ride On for your well deserved anchor. Sound Tom, it was my pleasure, The Cliffs is always pleasureable to sing……never been there,dont know when it was written or by whom….but once the opening notes beckon me to sing I am transported to that place that exists only in my mind….then to sing it for someone who has travelled so far to sit and listen to the songs…that adds another dimension….I wish you well on Route 66

Was up in the moorefield club house yesterday and even if I felt a little uncomfortable and getting itchy feet, I was taking in my surroundings and noticed a corner of the room dedicated to yourself..
One thing up on the wall was a song called “the moores” written by your good self and dedicated to your dad.

I sang that song once..must go back and have another gike at it…our first Senior Championship Title was in 1961…. I wrote the song about 15 years later….
I love the annual June Fest in Newbridge..a great team of dedicated volunteers put it all together every year….

To Christy, a very special thanks from Madina from Kazakhstan who was already having a great day, having being ‘fitted out’ for her birthday bike (she’ll reach the grand old age of 11 on Wednesday). Her highlight of ‘bike day’ was when you dedicated Lisdoonvarna to her. Like the two young boys in Westport the night before, it’s special moments like these, caught in childhood, that chart a lifetime voyage ahead. The influence your music has on so many people from Ireland to far flung places is truly miraculous – long, long may it last!
Then my highlight of the year so far came when I discovered the RTE five-month-plus-in-the-making musi-documentrary of your JOURNEY is now available online and includes the bonus film Christy’s Life on the Road. twas a damp and dirty evening, rainin cats and dogs,and yet ye came, in cars buses vans and trains, thru the punishin showers,the sheets of rain,…
ye gathered in The Landmark Hotel in that Town renowned (of late) for hins & schtags…ye created the air we need to fly….from the off ye stayed with us and,together in song,we all flew for 2 good hours…..after we drank tea with Larry & Colette McCormack…..Larry was a star player on The Kildare Team that won the 1956 Leinster Championship…I was 11 that day and in The (old) Hogan Stand with my dear Father….(within 3 months he was gone from us only 41 years old..we still miss him)….Kildare beat Wexford that day but were subsequently beaten by Cork in the Semi-Final..
then we were joined by Nathan Carter and his guitar player, lovely to see him at the gig and have a yarn with him..

Now I have 6 days to prepare for Letterkenny….I hope and pray its not Petrol-Head weekend up the North-West…them feckin boy racers are mad up there all the year round but once a year they go totally gaga….no sense, silencer nor suspension…..

Hope you are feeling good on the Banks of the Shannon. We’re still happy here though the sunshine was interrupted, but I think the gardeners and farmers will be delighted by the little rain.
Those days I’ve had some of your most beautiful songs on mind. “The Gardener” and “Gortatagort” when we visited a magnificent garden between Durrus and Colomane and the gardener led us through the paradise they created in the rolling hills of West Cork during the last twelve years. And “Folk Tale” as we wandered the magical forest in Glengarriff Nature Reserve.

Michael and I drove from Westport..soon as we reached Frenchpark I put on John Reillys Cd ( The Bonny Green Tree)….we listened to Raggle Taggle Gypsy,The Well Below The Valley and Lord Baker as we traversed Roscommon before crossing the Shannon into Leitrim..
great gardening country in West Cork…our favourite spot was Cois Cuan garden,created by Bob and Mary Walsh beside Kilcrohane…we had great times around there…Music in The White House….a few great dinners in Shiro, a Japanese Restaraunt in Ahakista,happy times in Moulnaskehagh, Rossnacaheragh, Rossmore, Durrus, Ballydehob, Ballylickey and Kealkill…..plenty of spuds, mackerel, scallions and good vibrations
Christy, the four of us really enjoyed your Westport gig last night and wanted to thank you so much for taking the time to make sure both of our boys got your plectrums afterwards. They both love to play guitar, so you made some real magic happen. We took two glowing young lads home! They’re gone off now to play at a communion…..with a serious pep in their step! Thanks again! “playing at a communion”! that would have led to excommunication in my day…Bishop would have had an hernia or ruptured his spleen, the Parish Priest succumb to red apoplexy, caused poor Rev Mother to collapse in inconsolable nervous breakdown ( waters might break),Brother Brendan would need ( to smoke) at least two fags….

Bob topped it off for us in Dublin on Thursday night….he delivered a beautiful gig, the Band was flawless, the stage warm and inclusive,he drew us both in….songs from the “songbook” were delivered beautifully, Autumn Leaves being the stand out song for me…he waltzed from Piano to centre stage, over and back, taking on water, doffin his titfor, an occasional smile, wee flashes of those iconic mannerisms, huge room full of love for this man who has shared so much with us across many decades…..my wife and I left that place contented in the glow that he had generated one more time….may he travel safe with peace of mind wherever the road takes him…..
there he was was, hand on hip, his Band around him, surveying the room as we stood and wished him well upon his way

Hi Christy and the Orchestra and thanks for a very happy and relaxed concert in Westport tonight. The shout-out for Ashling was immediately to my right and he sang beautifully with you. On my left was Ken who had come from Liverpool to see you and Philey and her charming husband who flew all the way from North Carolina enjoyed every moment. Theyll be in Carrick on Shannon again – perhaps a shout out?
We retired afterwards to Matt Molloys to another well rounded session. I’ll be bringing my wife and daughter from Kazakhstan to Carrick tomorrow night. By now, even with the English language being a barrier, they’re beginning to pick up on the words and Madina, our ten year old, loves the chorus of Lisdoonvarna. So we’ll see you again tomorrow – eh, make that tonight 🙂

it was leppin last night…I was plagued with a throat full of frogs …. the gig started and they all scarpered, after a 2 week lay off since Glasgow I was ready to sing, to hear my good companeros strike up one more time….I was late getting in so missed the sound check…but everything was spot on, fair play to the crew….that was a good room last night…the listeners were an inspiring collective….it was a pleasure and a priviledge… now we’re gonna saddle the ponies and head east for Lovely Leitrim….that strange and beautiful land…..I hope Madina has a good night, that ye make it safe down to The Shannon……
Hello! I don’t know if you take special requests… but we are coming to your performance at the Arklow Bay Hotel, 20th of July. The Voyage is our FAVOURITE song! I’m American, I was a primary school teacher, and a handsome red-head Irish man swept me off my feet, proposed in the turret of a castle, with rose petals scattered in the rain puddles on a soft summer’s day. I said, “Yes!” And we have been on the most amazing adventure ever since. We’ve been married 11 years, have lived in Arklow for nearly 9, and have 5 beautiful children. We are still madly in love. Some of our happiest times are when we put on traditional music – especially your recording of the Voyage… the little ones dance around and my husband plays the guitar and I watch with tears in my eyes as I watch “our own crew” and soak in the love that keeps us afloat.

l stole a bit of The Lass of Kelvinhaugh on my phone. I stayed in Jurys where the Broomielaw meets Clyde and Jamaica Streets. What a great song and well sung in Barrowlands, I’ve heard you sing it before but I don’t think you recorded it ever. So that’s my two cents worth of suggestion for the live album.

I’m writing as I was hoping to request my favorite song again for today’s show in Westport. Unfortunately I can’t make it as I’m in China at the moment (coming here anytime soon :)?), but two of my favorite people (Trish & Willie) are going to see you and they too love love this song! You played it for me in Derry last summer and it still gives me chills thinking about it. Our good friend Pearse from Westport passed away a couple months ago and this too was his favorite song. He was a rare thing…Would mean the world to all of us if you could play BeesWing for us. it was leppin last night…I was plagued with a throat full of frogs …. the gig started and they all scarpered, after a 2 week lay off since Glasgow I was ready to sing, to hear my good companeros strike up one more time….I was late getting in so missed the sound check…but everything was spot on, fair play to the crew….that was a good room last night…the listeners were an inspiring collective….it was a pleasure and a priviledge… now we’re gonna saddle the ponies and head east for Lovely Leitrim….that strange and beautiful land…..I hope Madina has a good night, that ye make it safe down to The Shannon……
Hello! I don’t know if you take special requests… but we are coming to your performance at the Arklow Bay Hotel, 20th of July. The Voyage is our FAVOURITE song! I’m American, I was a primary school teacher, and a handsome red-head Irish man swept me off my feet, proposed in the turret of a castle, with rose petals scattered in the rain puddles on a soft summer’s day. I said, “Yes!” And we have been on the most amazing adventure ever since. We’ve been married 11 years, have lived in Arklow for nearly 9, and have 5 beautiful children. We are still madly in love. Some of our happiest times are when we put on traditional music – especially your recording of the Voyage… the little ones dance around and my husband plays the guitar and I watch with tears in my eyes as I watch “our own crew” and soak in the love that keeps us afloat.
Thanks for being a special part of our life through your music!
if all goes well “The Voyage” will resound as we wander among The Wicklow Hills come July….its over 30 years since Johnny Duhan shared his song with me..I remember the time and place like it was yesterday….
l stole a bit of The Lass of Kelvinhaugh on my phone. I stayed in Jurys where the Broomielaw meets Clyde and Jamaica Streets. What a great song and well sung in Barrowlands, I’ve heard you sing it before but I don’t think you recorded it ever. So that’s my two cents worth of suggestion for the live album.
gonna go back and have a listen…learnt that song in 1964 and have not gigged it 10 times since..

I’m writing as I was hoping to request my favorite song again for today’s show in Westport. Unfortunately I can’t make it as I’m in China at the moment (coming here anytime soon :)?), but two of my favorite people (Trish & Willie) are going to see you and they too love love this song! You played it for me in Derry last summer and it still gives me chills thinking about it. Our good friend Pearse from Westport passed away a couple months ago and this too was his favorite song. He was a rare thing…Would mean the world to all of us if you could play BeesWing for us. Thank you again for giving us your lovely music, will be in Ireland in the summer myself so hope to catch a show then! Thanks Christy and have a great show!

Must admit I do prefer Barrowlands to Usher hall whenever you’re in Scotland.
