My 23 year old son and I really enjoyed the show tonight. The song that stayed with us was the love lost tale of a women with wild eyes, the one that got away and married a traveller but couldn’t stay. that was kind of the gist of it. What’s the name of it, we’d like to hear it again.
Christy's reply
Hi Maria…its called Beeswing, a song by Richard Thompson…..recorded it a few years back and it will also be on a live album due out in mid Nov.
Its a wonderful song to sing…..
I bid farewell to the state of old New York, my home away from home In the state of New York I came of age
When first I started roaming…
The McGarrigle sisters played Queen’s student union in late 70’s and brought a burst of harmonious colour to our grey city streets…absolutely love that song. Their father Frank was Irish/Canidian. They played Siamsa Cois Laoi ( session by the park, Cork 1986) and you were in the line up! You’ve been round a fair few corners. Ride on and see you next month! Mary
Christy's reply
such a distinctive sound from the Sisters…sometimes when families sing together it can be so very special ….McGarrigles, McPeakes, Clancys, Everlys, Watersons,Louvains,Carters, and a thousand other families around the world…..
occasionally I get to sing with my siblings, just among ourselves, Eilish, Anne, Terry, Andy, Barry. and myself…we sing the songs we learnt as children….its always special for the six of us..just for us…..it would’nt work in any other situation…family voices….echoes of days long gone…..pre tv days
Hope your fighting fit ! I will be at the royal Festival Hall tomorrow night. It would be great if you could mention my recently departed father Patrick ( Speedy ) Cahill, we will be taking him home to Tramore Co Waterford to be laid to rest and a song from you would make it that much easier.
All the best
Tony Cahill
Christy's reply
Farewell to Speedy..safe journey home to Tramore…the exact spot where my own journey began….9 months before I saw the light of day
Mate….What can I say….the tasteful shout out to the departed mother in Watford was pure class….Hadn’t heard a few of the songs for a good while…..Musgrave…especially……Then when you sang Spancil Hill it spooked us out completely as that was my Mothers favourite song EVER…The sound, the voice the band was top notch in Watford…You seem like youre really enjoying yourself on stage …..and that’s what its all about. Thanks again for everything.
I’ll fly over on Sunday for the Final….so get the frying pan and the bed ready for me…#mayo4sam
Christy's reply
say no more me auld china…enjoy thon game….I hope to be on the Hill mysel, one lily-white in a sea of sky blue……
Morning Christy.
Having a great week reconnecting to some tunes I hadn’t heard for a while and a few minstrels not easily forgotten. Came across a song from Liam Clancy I’d not heard before called Talk to me of Mendocino. Blew my mind like a song hasn’t done for a while. Good luck in the big smoke. Ratoath is not so far off.
Take Care
Hi Christy – we look forward to seeing you tonight at the Royal Festival Hall. My husband (Toni Ghatta) claims he is your only Sikh fan…this is his 25th concert & at home he plays your music & combines it with Bollywood dancing in our kitchen:) – bet you don’t see too much of that!
Christy's reply
welcome into our tent Toni….sounds like you got a lot cookin in your lively kitchen…always been partial to a bit of Bollywood myself
Looking forward to tomorrow night Christy- if you could squeeze beeswing into your set that would be appreciated- no version is in touch to yours
Cheers
Paul
Christy's reply
could be a tight squeeze Paul but no guarantees….these nights our sets are very random and unplanned….sometimes I dont know what I’m singing myself until the song is almost over…..
Hi Christy. After seeing you last night in worthing having travelled from manchester, me and my fella had such an amazing night we have just booked tickets to watch your last gig in Limerick and im sooooo excited, hopefully i will get to meet you again. Take care sarah xx
Dear Christy,
Thank you very much for your picturesque description! Sounds as everybody had a very joyful night in the town by the roaring sea.
What a grand setlist! Wish we’ll get to hear some of the rare gems you sang last night when we are seeing you next time (won’t be long now).
Great that you choose one of Adam’s brilliant photos for your new album cover! It will make the Wicklow Boy very happy, I think.
Hope you’re having a nice day off.
All the best for the second half of the tour and safe journey home!

Hi Christy, After spending a week in Dublin seeing our son settling in to Trinity College we find ourselves longing to see you live again. Any plans to visit Wales this year? A warm welcome is assured and if you need any more Welsh dragons, I’m your man 😉
Christy's reply
apart from a quick dart thru Holyshed on Friday I dont know when I’ll be back to Cymru …but it will not be this year Alan….hope your Son settles in Trinity
Driving home from Worthing last night, I pondered who on earth could fill your shoes when you finally hang up the old six string?
Stay well Christy, peeking into that future lacuna caused a shudder.
I comforted myself by remembering and reprising
“They were purple or magenta, like a statue during Lent.”
Surely one of folk music’s great lyrics.
Unusual, eclectic and wonderfully satisfying set from you and the band.
Go raibh mile maith agaibh
Christy's reply
singers come and singers go but songs reverberate til they resound again..
Hi Christy, thank you for another great experience. I had the full house with the songs I was looking for. I was going to apologise for bellowing Corinna but as I left the man in front (now probably slightly deaf) thanked me for the shout out. So from Mick and I thank you to you all for the vibe and the hard graft. And thank you to Declan especially for singing a song that no one sings better. See you by the dirty old Thames. Xx
Hi Christy
My daughter, Georgina, and I are going on our annual jaunt to see you at the RFH tomorrow. Have been replacing some of my old scratchy records with CDs and have replaced the first LP of yours I bought – The Time Has Come; would love to hear Sacco and Vanzetti. Looking forward to the show.
Any chance of a shout out to the Fulham GAA team watching your show at Royal festival hall on Thursday 14Sept?
We are lead by former Down GAA legend Greg McCartan and would love to hear Joxter for our journeys to Ruislip this summer chasing the London Championship.
Go raibh maith agat!
Christy's reply
ah Jasus Jonny what are you like….everyone at the RFH gigs will belong to clubs, bridge, golf, bondage, legion of mary, nazis, male camogie, female hurling, fca, pta, ira, gaa, psni, hopscotch,eu,leave, remain, rowers growers wicket keepers, keyhole peepers, and you want me to call out your GAA club….what about my GAA club or the other 3 in the band…( ok ..Declan dont do that kinda thing)
…..there was a riot in Sydney State Theatre between rival GAA clubs…took the NSW riot squad 40 minutes to calm things down so as I could continue my gig… then I sang “The Red and Green” and the whole bloody business started allover again
when I sang a cover version of Foster &Allen’s Bunch of Thyme in Canberra Labour Club the stage was rushed my a squadron of Aussie Militant Feminists (TUFTS) chanting “Dead Men Dont Rape”……they put the heart crossways on me until I was rescued by the local Parish Priest who beat them off with his crozier and rosary beads…
what are you trying to do to me jonny..its taken me 52 years to gain this stage..I cant be doin things like that…even for such a Castlewellan legend
Fabulous gig last night in Worthing; extra special when you surprised us with two Planxty ballads ‘Billy Gray’ and ‘Little Musgrave’ what a treat! As you said there was a great vibe in the Hall last night and you looked like you had an enjoyable time too. See you next time. John B
Christy's reply
we had ourselves a real good time last night for two hours in thon Worthing Pavilion…then it was back into the box and on up to Londing for the next bout..
dark and lonely work but someone s got to do it
Hi Christy, it was fantastic to see and hear you again, this time in Watford. The very first time I saw you was in Cambridge in 1993 and you sang to us “if it’s music you want, then go to Clare”. I took your advice and the next spring I was in Lisdoonvarna and it was during that first visit that I purchased my first bodhran, inspired by your good self. That drum has taken me all over the county and back to Ireland several times, and has given me the opportunity to meet and play with some truly wonderful musicians. I write and perform my own songs and that is all down to your inspiration, I really can’t thank you enough for being the spark that lit my fire.
Paul
Christy's reply
do you know Paul that there is a Bodhran Festival every year on Inis Oírr, the most westerly of the three Aran Island off County Galway..Jim Higgins is a regular..Donal Lunny played it this year…Bodhran bashers flock from all over the globe…Goats take to the high ground to avoid meeting stretched relations..
I wish you happy days rhythming on the ancient drum
Hi Christy. Me and my partner came from Manchester to Worthing yesterday to see you! What a great performance, you are a legend!! Cannot wait to see you again. And to top of the night i got a picture with you outside before you left (thanks for the grapes by the way haha). Xx
Christy's reply
from Cheadle to Worthing… what a spin that was…safe home to your fella
Dear Christy, It was wonderful to see you play in my home town of Worthing last night. It was so good to see a gig without having to be at the mercy of Southern Rail. This was the 15th time I have seen you live since 2007 (a mere drop in the ocean compared to many 4711ers, I know, but far more than I have seen any other artist in that time). Last night was a beautiful gig and all of you were amazing …..I loved Cathal’s fiddle playing in particular. I was in the front row (with my 2 sons) but I missed the opportunity to shake your hand as I reacted a bit like a bunny rabbit caught in headlights when you zoomed to the front of the stage! Anyway, thank you so much.
Christy's reply
I wanna move to Worthing…sing in that room every Sat night…swim out to the turbine farm every morning before breakfast…support Chris Hughton at Brighton & Hove Albion….go to Ireland on my holidays at least 4 times a month….
good to hear from you again..glad you made it with your Sons to the gig…Shine on Jackie
