Christy,
Thank you for a wonderful concert at the RFH on Wednesday. Every song was great. Johnny Jump Up was the very first song I ever heard of yours. It was on a compilation album called ‘All The Folk That Fits’ back in the 70’s. Anyway, I wrote a story about the evening on my blog site. I know you are a busy man but if you would like to read it you can find it here-http://patrickmaginty.blogspot.co.uk/
All the best,
Pat.
PS, Go Mayo !
Christy's reply
Hey Pat,
I’m back home now, just after the breakfast…enjoyed the story on your blog, thanks for sharing..
A wee story on the original recording of “Johnny Jump Up” back in 1975…..when I first heard the song from Jimmy Crowley I thought of banjo….I contacted Barney McKenna who agreed to play with me….he was due into the studio on mon evening…no show ! 5 days later he arrived into the studio at 1 am with a few well oiled Fishermen and a bag of Mackerel…he listened to the song once and away we went….happy to be singing it 42 years later with Cathal Hayden on banjo
Barney McKenna was a unique, wonderful, eccentric and warm hearted man……another Barney story gave me the line
Dear Christy,
I first saw you at Theatre L in UCD about 1982. On Thursday night we had front row seats at the RFH. I was there with my husband and two kids (20 & 18). They are also Christy fans of longstanding from listening to your music on the long road home every Summer from London to Westmeath via Holyhead (we too have seen the inside of that shed!). Thursday was vintage Christy and the fiddle and drums were gorgeous. I feel like your music has followed me through all the seasons of my life and each and every song evokes deep memories and feelings of times past. Please pass on my thanks to the rest of your crew both onstage and behind the scenes. Thank you. Kay
Christy's reply
Thank you Kay,
thank you for mentioning the Band and Crew….our long standing team of Paddy, Michael, Johnny, Dikon,David, Geoff (and their back-ups) do all the Prep work….When Declan, Jimmy, Cathal and I arrive at a venue, everything is perfectly in place, sound system, lighting, instruments and ,most impotantly, our travelling canteen. All we have to do is pick up the instruments and play .
Always good to hear from a long-haul listener. to read of how you shared those trips from London to Westmeath, now returning to hear the music with your 2 “chadults” ..
Dear Christy,
thanks a lot for that wonderful concert! We came from Hamburg ( Germany) to your concert because I couldn’t find a gig from you here..what a mess. So we decided to travel…what a night…so glad that we have been there!!
30 years ago I’ve heard you the first time at the Blue Lagoon in Sligo at my first stay in Ireland. Since then “Ride on” is my favorite song and you played it on wednesday in London…Thanks, it was so wonderful !!! I never missed a concert of you in Hamburg and I’m still hoping to hear you one more time here…is there a chance !?
Take care ♥
Christy's reply
I would love to play Hamburg again, to do some German Concerts again……but there is nothing planned at this time….there are many new factors to consider before any decision can be made….
Having made such a long trip I am happy that you had a good night in London….
Thanks for sharing
Just landed back in Dublin awaiting the Number 2 Bus home ,,,,, was a grand week,,,,, gigs were great and great to meet up with friends again ,,,,Enjoy the time off between gigs hope u catch some films,,,, few good ones out at the moment … thanks Adam
Christy's reply
twas a good wee tour Adam….arriving home always tops it off….
Hi Christy. The very first album I was given was Planxty Planxty (the black cover) when I was 13. I’m 54 now and still find myself captivated. Modest as you are, of all the stars that ever shone, not one does twinkle like yours, even in your great ancientness. From vinyl, to gigs in Dublin, to these lovely moments in Royal Festival Hall (saw you on Thursday), you’ve lit up nights and moved hearts for decades now. More power to you. It’s an honour to be a witness to your time. Nadim
Christy's reply
Thank you for staying the distance Nadim….it is 45 years since that music was recorded in London with Liam O’Flynn, Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny…..it was an exciting time as Planxty began to spread its wings and fly……
its a wonder to be back in London again, this time with Declan Sinnott, Jimmy Higgins and Cathal Hayden…..everything in the world has changed, the songs still bring us all together
Oh Christy !!!!! What a night ! Thank you and the rest of the lads so much for Thursday at the Royal Festival Hall. I have been to see you there quite a few times now, but this was by far the best so far, as I think the audience we’re really up for it. I hope to see you many more times in the future, so don’t go taking any rest’s just yet. Can I just ask, what was the name of the amazing song you sang about ” The Well “, sorry I can’t remember.
I’ll be in Tramore soon, for my dad’s funeral, so I’ll be thinking of your….ahem…beginnings lol
All the best Sir
Christy's reply
that ancient song is called “The Well Below The Valley”….I first heard it in 1965, I recorded it with Planxty back in 1974 and again on an album called “Traveller” in 1999….I feel the current arrangement is the best so far…someone may send you a recording of last nights version in RFH….I may record it again at some stage…I have a hankering to record a set of old songs with this band and this much older voice…
I wish you well as you take Speedy back to rest in Trá Mór…hope you get a chance to walk the long beach
Dear Christy, Thank you for your previous reply re. the Worthing gig. I also attended the two Festival Hall shows…..both were amazing but I was so excited that I actually got to shake your hand last night (and also really happy that Adam got an excellent photo of the moment!) Well Below the Valley was particularly brilliant and it was lovely to hear Easter Snow and Deportees….. Thanks so much to all concerned for three awesome gigs. Have a safe journey back home. Jackie H of Sunny Worthing 🙂
Christy's reply
Thanks to you Jackie and to all the wonderful listeners who turned up over the four nights in England and us all feel so welcome…on behalf of The Band and Crew I thank everyone of you…
I am enjoying the gigs, the Band is tight, the voice is holding up….
Sligo beckons, then Cavan, Belfast, Mayo and on towards all those distant horizons
Hi Christy, thank you and your band for the beautiful music last night, and for playing The Voyage. Nathan and I might not have our own crew, but the nephews and nieces are doing a great job too (“Don’t Forget Your Shovel” always has them giggling and dancing like crazy). As always, your music made me think of home, far away, how you carry home (or a version of it) around with you, and how the homesickness never goes away. I also wondered how many of the miners in my home town, who were told to shift when the mine closed in 1997, would still feel you’re singing straight from their hearts. Thanks for a great night, and please come back to London soon. Seems like most of the regulars at Gertie Browne’s are waiting for your return! Christine
Christy's reply
as we leave, the return journey begins, we hope and wish to hit The Big Smoke one more time….
but first we gotta gig a few sheebeens, roadhouses and hostelries around Éire,……….
keep coming back Christine
Christy, what a wonderful evening last night. I went through every emotion, fun, laughter with Joker goes to Stuttgart, the Amsterdam song, and tears with Nancy Spain, beautiful. The boys in the band were amazing. Wonderful audience. Probably wishing my life away, but can’t wait for 18 months time, when please God you return to London. Thank you once again, and safe journey home to your beautiful homeland. Mick.

Barney123Mick,
we enjoyed our nights upon The Thames…great lively listening audience …..priviledge and pure pleasure to play to such a gathering…Ride On Mick & Barney..1,2,3 and away we go
Hello Christy,
What a magnificent show last night… from the first song to the last.
I was introduced to your music by a house mate at uni in Liverpool in 1993. I won’t name & shame him but he was from Omagh, Co Tyrone and he used to try and sing your numbers every night on his acoustic guitar (mainly Ride On I recall). He was a hopeless singer but a top man and he didn’t put me off your sound.
This was my first time seeing you proper (saw u at the Fleur, Finsbury Pk a few years back, v good) and it was a total privilege. My wife is from Sweden and she enjoyed it even more… they love the Irish over there.
Have a safe trip back to Ireland, thanks again Christy – Patrick
p.s. and the band were great too… def Good Vibrations!!

…so I was saying to this couple before the show that I’d been last night and left a message on your website.
Well, what a lovely surprise and after the show a guy behind me introduced me to Len McCluskey and says ‘this is Roy’! I haven’t had so much fame since I was singing as a holiday rep out in Spain, in 1986.
Two memorable nights Christy; thank you so much for playing ‘The Easter Snow’ . I’m sure Seamus loved it.
I kiss you on your Kildare lips!
Christy's reply
it was a noble call Roy….I’ve a feeling Easter Snow will feature more frequently…
Hello, Christy: I live in California and will be visiting Ireland from October 10th to the 17th. This trip was put together at the last minute, and I was not able to work around your concert schedule – any chance you are doing any gigs during that time that are not on your calendar? If not, I hope you have a well-deserved rest. And thanks for your music! Got to see you over here years back in Culver City – it was one of the best musical experiences I have ever had, and I am hoping to see you play again one of these days. All the best to you!

Many miss him dearly, none more so then his own beloved family….
Thanks Paddy…..
Christy,
I can’t sing to save my life but I know when I’ve heard a quality act…the gig blew me away tonight. I’m still shaking off the shivers down my spine from hearing Nancy Spain. Can’t believe you played Planxty’s Little Musgrave, beautiful, and the banjo solo at the end of Go, Move Shift was brilliant. Thank you all for a great night. I’m at Victoria now waiting for my coach back to Bristol. I’m tempted to come and see you in Killarney next month.
Cheers Christy
Christy's reply
mention of the Victoria Coach Station stirs a few memories….long hauls to Glasgow and Aberdeen….troubled sleeps,
…yes indeed, its a real treat for me to have Cathal playing beside me these nights, along with Jimmy and Declan he surrounds the songs ,dressing them in most colourful fashion and finery, carrying me along from song to song in high fidelity… ….(there must have been something in my muesli this morning!!)
Hi Christy,
I’ve just read all the previous comments , I was on vacation in Sicily and had no internet ( what a blessing). It was very nice you’ve wrote such a great comment about Hilary. She truly is your number one listener and indeed always watch out for others. We poor souls abroad who don’t always have the opportunity to see you are blessed with her commitment and dedication.
So hopefully she keeps on finding the energy to keep us posted!
Greetings from a very wet Belgium

Easter Snow has melted back into the clay….I wont have time to resurrect it before this evening but its a noble call..I wrote it in tribute to Seamus Ennis who played an enormous part in protecting our music heritage……
must confess I have not heard of Harry Stiles before, must check him out….I dont get out to often when I’m not working….
I hope that tonights set will be different…gotta keep it interesting both for ourselves and for our devoted “every nighters”
