I was in Vicar Street last night,Thursday 28th April..that date will go in the diary…what a very special gig that was..!! From the opening song, ‘Does this train stop on Merseyside’ to the closing bars of ‘ No time for Love’ , this was one amazing show. The 5 of you on stage lit up the venue as soon as you stepped out…Declan is absolutely on fire the last few times I’ve seen the show, Seamie O’ Dowd just adds something special to the songs, Jimmy bates away on the side keeping time, and Andy Moore on vocals…and when the five voices sing together on certain songs , there is no better sound in the music world..
So many past Albums were dipped into last night, from the ‘Ordinary Man’ album, to ‘ Graffitti Tongue’, ‘Time Has Come’, Listen’ , ‘Unfinished Revolution’, ‘Voyage’ and ‘Folk Tale’ and ‘ Where I come from’…just off top of my head that is….beautiful song from John Reillys time that will now appear on the new CD, ‘Lily’…all the new songs that were sung last night were just perfect…Declan O’ Rourkes ‘Lightening Bird, wind river man’ is exceptional…the reaction to ‘Oblivious’ was fantastic, applause during the song made it even more special…The Tuam Beat must be the next chart topper..
‘Mandolin Mountain’ was made for you, and not forgetting ‘The Gardener’…It was a perfect concert, great sound, even the lights went purple for a moment when Prince got a mention…the crowd left the building on a high…floatin down Thomas Street…Congratulations on the new album, on the sound thats coming from the stage, in 33 years of gig going and almost 700 under my belt, I can safely say that last night was among my Top 5 favourite Christy Moore (& ensemble( gigs )….Bruce may be here next month, but the Real Boss was in Vicar Street last night…here’s to many, many more…Thank you..L

hey there stranger…London was good..love that venue…a real funky joint…no delusions or pretensions…they all roll their sleeves up and help band and crew as best they can..thel also laid on top scran..there was sheeps eyes and mashed mangles, there was chopped straws and buttermilk..we were as full as ticks going out to play….jasus boy I coud barely budge on the stool and me trying to pursue Farmer Michael Hayes..the poor lad was in America and I was still back at the first verse..then the audience come in all buoyed up with the sparkling Thames air in their lungs….you were not the only one who missed London..my good companero ( The Galtee Mountain Boy ) from Gloccamaura got ejected even before the feckin gig started..the crowd control engineers did not understand his sense of humour
Just listened to The Tuam Beat on ITunes. I liked it, clear as a bell and has an up vibe to it.

PS…the current line-up has not yet been introduced to the Little Musgrave…they would have heard it but there are subtlties lurking that need prior addressing…the adultery needs certain consideration from the rhythm section, the first murder is extremely violent whilst the second murder is laced with passion and heartbreaking love for the victim…the perpetrator is left lonely and alone in the graveyard at Bucklesfordbury, this requires a considered atmosphere that cannot be achieved without long rehearsal , discussion, tea brown bread and Cashel Blue cheese

The Yellow Bittern has never been on the set list….I started singing it over 40 years ago..its a classic song learned from Andy Rynne who learned it from Joe Heaney…I did it once with Liam O’Flynn in The National Concert Hall and have sung it occasionally at singing sessions…I’ve heard rumour of a possible retro album (coming shortly) that might feature this song….originally written by Rory Dall Ó Catháin, the version I sing was translated by Thomas McDonagh .
I hope the work is going well..just finished sound check here in Vicar St, Dublin…the crowd are assembling, the atmosphere is good here in the dressing as we tighten our girdles and get the lip gloss on….

Got Lily on pre-order and looking forward to meeting her. Good looking track listing for sure. Been an interesting week of memories with the 30th anniversary of Chernobyl and the Hillsborough verdict. Sad how so many suffer and have to battle for basic justice. Your songs have always been to the forefront in bringing those struggles to our attention and that is a good thing. Good to see the gigs going as well as ever. Hopefully I’ll get a few lined up soon. My wife complains (justly) about my capacity to find an Irish angle to everything….but it seemed very reminiscent to me of the Saville Inquiry today. Same pattern of denials, same establishment cover up and same eventual caving in to groundswell of evidence and community activism. Also same media jumping on the bandwagon at the 11th hour and no shortage of crocodile tears being shed by politicians either. I remember watching the images on TV that day but in retrospect it seems inextricably linked to the Thatcherite use of the police at the time as a ‘force’ rather than a ‘service’.
There’s a lot more to come out during the inevitable criminal prosecutions that will surely now flow -I only hope that the long arm of the law reaches all the way to the Sun -well done Aldo on his comments today on that score. I note that the rag in question contains no reference to the verdict on its front page today. ‘The Truth’ -at last.
Glad that the families of the 96 have been vindicated at last and I hope that some semblance of justice will follow in due course.

Well said Mary (& Christy) a massive victory not only for the 96 but for all those who ‘never came home’ be it from a civil rights march a football match or a St Valentines day dance. For too long the establishment have held white wash investigations and laid the blame at the feet of the innocent victims whilst exonerating those really responsible. Not this time, a victory for all working class people.

Christy i just want to say a massive thank you for the music and the songs, but i want to say a bigger thank you for something that runs much deeper that i cant really explain but im gonna try,
I started listening to you when i was 12 (34 now), i emigrated to South Carolina last year and last night i put my parents back on the plane home to Ireland after they came to visit me, as i was leaving the airport i put on graffiti tongue for the journey home and as usual i sang along to every word all the way through Atlanta traffic, it kept my mind off thinking about the sadness of missing home and family in that immediate moment, thats what music does right??
But i want to say thanks to you because you have been doing that for me for years, in my early twenties when i had depression (like so many young men at home but don’t know how to handle it) your music cheered me up, it did then what it did last night it offered me an escape from the moment and it gave me a little piece of joy.
When i was in collage you were on in the background, cutting the grass you were in the earbuds, i have psyched myself up for hurling matches listening to Nancy Spain!, sang Little Musgrave with my best friend, brought girlfriends to Christy gigs till i found the right woman who is a massive fan haha as i sit at my desk now in South Carolina you-tube is playing a Christy mix in the background.
And thats been it for years, your songs have effectively played the soundtrack to my life, now i drive with my soon to be wife singing the ballad of Ruby (shes off to Rolex horse show in Kentucky this weekend and has the Christy mix made on spotify for the trip) and things couldn’t be better.
So through good and bad, happy and sad thank you for the gigs from the madness in the tent at electric picnic, Lisdoonvarna in the RDS, Enniscorthy, the point, the O2, Waterford, the tent in Cork, Barrolands, the opera house, the Dun-Mhuire, the Talbot, Whites, Vicar street, the Pierce Turner benefit gig and countless others I’ve sat in the back just carried away with the songs.
Its hard put into words the gratitude i wish to express and im sure you have heard it all a million times…but i needed to say it just the once, THANK YOU.
i hope to visit home again this Christmas and ill make some gig somewhere and i cant wait!!
