Christy,
The name of the harbour town is Frenantle.
That’s unfortunate that the air travel is out. Looks like I’ll have to pencil in another trip home so.
All the best.
Christy's reply
the very spot…played a club there.. a funky joint..met up with Frank Lunny. I also re-connected with Tadhg Manly. He was an undercover Dominican Priest who once tried to teach me Irish….we drank whiskey til dawn……not quite sure how it ended but when I woke up the Fáinne was gone from my lapel (in vino veritas)
Christy,
I travelled back home for a month to visit my family during March and April. I booked a couple of a tickets before I left for your first Vicar Street gig in April. It was long term goal to see you live and it was well worth the wait …. It was the best concert I’ve been to yet. Thanks for the memory and hopefully you might travel across to Perth at some stage so we can see you again.
Cheers.
Christy's reply
Flan…Glad to read of your visit home…its a long haul from WA…thanks for sharing…its almost 20 years since my last visit to Perth, since then I have concentrated on the home patch…air travel became off limits, sometihng I regret but accept…I loved my visits to Perth, that great wide open,sun-drenched, colourful City…had some right good gigs there in both the fine Concert Hall and out in the neighbouring Harbor town who’s name I can never recall….had a grand day on The Murray River in 1984 with a large group of Irish Musicians including Barney McKenna,Ronnie Drew….we were on a Festival Tour of Australia and New Zealand….a great experience fondly remembered…..on the flight from Perth to Sydney I sat beside Barney who asked the flight attendant for “a pint of stout and twenty Gold Flake”
Hi Christy,
Just looked at recordings of the The Journey and wish to congratulate you and to say well done — still doing us proud. Keep it going. Remember that 70 is the new 50.
Christy's reply
Hey Frankie…are we on the early Mass next week? Will it be with McNally or Jem Gorman? I suppose you’ll be doing right and I’ll be left to quench the candles. Paddy Cullen is opening the servers envelopes…who will defend us ? Shall we go to The Mons or will Maxie McDonagh sort it ?
This 70 is a great age..what stage are you at now?…
Only yesterday or the day before the day before yesterday, I was thinking about how I hadn’t heard The Blantyre Explosion / Clyde’s Bonnie Banks for quite a while. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever heard it live but others may have – another one for the wish list, maybe.
Christy
I have listened to your wonderful music since I was a garsun at the Lisdoonvarna festivals. Living in Scotland I was’nt able to watch The Journey on RTE last week. I subscribe to RTE player international but it’s not on it and when I open the ordinary I player it won’t show because of “my location”. Can I download it or even buy it somewhere ? Looking forward to seeing you in Glasgow next time.
Hi Christy: Well I imagine you’re up to date with our strange primary election season in the good ‘oul USA. On the bright side they are bringing back the auld triangles. Only this time they are green according to Messrs Trump and Cruz! What a shambles. Don’t they ever learn? Time to get Yellow Triangles and I Pity the Immigrant back in the setlist.

Wondered if you will be posting set list from last night? Some crackers we want to make sure we can listen to again.

Hi Christy, wat’s the craic? Travelling to see you The Landmark Hotel, Carrick on Shannon, next Friday 22 April. Really looking forward to it. Have seen you many many times in Derry and throughout the country – always fantastic. One time in Letterkenny the audience were all calling for requests and during a 2 second lull I called up “whatever you want Christy!” and to my surprise and delight you acknowledged me saying something like “that man’s right!”. Anyway I now have a request – I haven’t heard you play ‘Irish Ways and Irish Laws’ since St. Columb’s Hall in Derry circa 1985, could you play it for my wife Teresa and I? Oh and ‘Back Home in Derry’ wouldn’t go amiss either. Go raibh maith Christy.
Christy's reply
Irish Ways has had but one outing in the past few years…. Back Home is a regular in the set list….we’ll sail up The Shannon and see what happens…safe journey…St Columb’s Hall in the 80s ? I bet it was The Rialto
Hi Christy, the gig last night in Vicar street was really special. It was really nice to see your son on the stage with you and Declan as always blows me away with his guitar playing. My brothers Ciaran, Thomas and myself couldn’t remember how many times we have seen seen you in Vicar Street but are already looking forward to the next one. Thanks again Christy.
Christy's reply
Declan was hitting the sweet notes last night..it was one of those special nights when the gig just flowed effortlessly and seamlessly…singing with my Son Andy by my side is very special…he has been hearing some of these songs all of his life…he has inherited the gift of natural harmony from his Grandmother Nancy and his Aunt Anne Rynne both of who could harmonise at will. Its a rare gift and one that I do not possess. It used take me long hours to learn harmonies back in the Planxty era. Our two voices seem to blend well together
PS. My sister Anne Rynne has just finished recording her first album which will be released shortly. Having sung all her life, Anne has taken up the guitar and become a very accomplished performer. I have heard her first album and it is quite beautiful. I look forward to it’s release and we’ll announce it here when the time comes.
Back in the US, safe and sound. Thanks for the welcome at Guildford, for the City of Chicago and thanks again especially for The Gardener. Looking forward to the next excursion. You asked where my dad farmed, well it was a townland called Grennan, in the parish of Moylagh, Oldcastle, Meath. On April 2nd after I left Guildford, I buried his ashes there, I thought of something you said years ago about mingling with the dust of the old neighbors. Anyway it’s nestled between the ruins of a castle on Moylagh hill (compliments of Oliver Cromwell) and a ruined chapel in Loughrew (compliments of Oliver Plunkett). He was Jim Connell and we can place our family at Grennan for five generations. My great grandfathers cousin, also Jim Connell from Rathniska near Kells, wrote a song called The Red Flag which gained some fame in the late 1800’s. My Mother is from Kentstown near Navan, she has great stories of stealing the odd cigarette from her cousins pub, McGuire’s and her uncle Peter McDermott was a famous footballer known as “the man in the cap”, great Meath history. We still have aunts, uncles and cousins nearby in Brownstown, Not so far from Yellow Furze and yup, there’s a reason for every season. Thanks,
Christy's reply
what a great post….I had hoped for such sharing when setting up this site 12 years ago …so many different strands to your post..
you say your Uncle Jim Connell of Rathniska “gained some fame” with his song..he sure did…that song is the anthem of “The Left” in the UK..
your Father’s ashes lying between the “Two Oliver’s” is almost a metaphor for the ashes of this Island lying between the citadels of Church and State..
I cant recall precisely what a metaphor does so I am taking a stab at one here…doubtless I’ll be corrected if off the mark..
Peter McDermott, “the man in the cap’ visited our house when I was a small boy. When Meath played Kildare in Newbridge, Father Packy Tully would visit our Mother ( Nancy was a Meath woman living in exile in the Short grass). On one occasion Peter McDermott came with him. I can still see him in my childhood memory. Paddy O’Brien, Red Collier are other players I recall from that Meath team who won an All-Ireland in the early 50’s. I recall being at a Big game in Croker when Meath were playing Cavan. My grandfather, Jack Power, threw me in the air upon the old Cusack Stand ( “anyone for the last few choc ices”)
Hi Christy …thanks for a wonderful night at Vicar Street …takes something very special to drag me away from a Liverpool game and even though it was an exceptional game at Anfield (by all accounts) I was still glad to be in Dublin and at ringside for tonight’s performance. Great line up on stage, I think the new fella will fit in OK LOL ! ..lovely set as well, a few golden oldies and a few new songs as well (first time I’ve heard Lilly) …I was hoping for Does This Train Stop On Merseyside tonight as today is the 27 anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy 15.04.1989 ..maybe it might come up in Carrick on Shannon next week if you think of it. Good to see some familiar and friendly faces as always tonight…my nephew was blown away by his first CM experience tonight ..anyways it’s back to the hills for me …see you in Lovely Leitrim next weekend Love & Respect Martin Mac

Hi Christy. I’m not long home from your Vicar St gig which, in fairness, was another stormer. Paul & Tomás were with me continuing our annual tradition. As you were starting Burning Times, I had a sudden flashback to the first time I saw you live, in Carlow RTC (IT now) in the Spring of 1989. I still remember laughing out loud when you introduced the Eamon Casey song with “Now this is a song written by a dog…”. It’s been a long road for me since which, like for most people, has had some stretches darker than others. Thankfully the place it’s brought me to now is a good one. I met my wife in 2000 (I said here before how I sang Nancy Spain at the afters of the wedding we met at) and we’re very blessed to have two lovely kids. I often can’t believe how lucky I am, and I felt a little bit luckier tonight being able to enjoy the captivating singing and music from you and Declan and the others. Thanks so much and all the best. Ciaran.

You should be right in the middle of it again as I write this. If it comes anywhere near last nights perfection then they are in for a great evening. The songs and the harmonies from Andy and then Seamie coming in low was fantastic.

Hi Christy ..Let the music keep your spirits high!! Thankyou from the bottom of my heart for your most wonderful lyrics, music, musings and company last night in Vicar St. I loved every moment and was delighted to bring my daughter and niece to their first Christy concert. To say they were blown away is an understatement. Fair play to you Christy I think you are in the form of your life. I guess over the years I have been to your gigs maybe 20 times going way back to late 70s and I have always had a great time. But I simply have to say last night surpassed everything and as a fellow concert goer remarked to me last night as we left “there’d have to be something wrong with you if you didn’t enjoy that”. Thanks Christy for great memories .Rejuvenated myself today as a result. Keep singing

Hey Ossie, just tying my laces to leave the house….will be in there at 5 to check the sound and lighting and tuning and catering ..then into make-up and wardrobe before being finally checked and frisked by medical team…then after few decades of the Joyful Mysteries head out to face the Listeners…Tonight we will be a five piece band with 2 new members..when the show is underway and all is running smoothly I will try and remember all the shout-outs, requests,get-wells,plugs, chords, lyrics, tablets, city, venue, the clock….. and then a call out for Grainne McSmithwicks
Hi
Really excited to be on my way to Vicar Street tonight
Full circle …I have had a wonderful time reconnecting with the friend who introduced me to your music at Kytlers Inn during your Planxty days
We will relive being front row ‘groupies’
Have a great time and best wishes

Rory Best, Gary Halpin, The Claw, Keith Wood, Reggie Corrigan, John Hayes, Marcus Horan, Gerry Flannery, to name but a few “Front Row Groupies” of recent years…
Kytler Years brings me back to the mid 70s…when the old place..
was run by a lad from Goresbridge
Sad to hear of the death of Robbie Brennan. Had some great nights in the old Harcourt Hotel when he played under many guises including Hotfoot and Red Peters Band. Gone but not forgotten.
Christy's reply
Robbie was a great drummer.we had some good times together…we played together on the “Whatever Tickles” album in 1974 and he also played in The Ballymagash Ceilí Band with Jimmy Faulkner, Declan McNelis,Kevin Burke, Donal Lunny and myself…we did a few gigs together back about 42 years ago….sorry to hear of his passing…..may he be at peace

Carol
Rory Best, Gary Halpin, The Claw, Keith Wood, Reggie Corrigan, John Hayes, Marcus Horan, Gerry Flannery, to name but a few “Front Row Groupies” of recent years…
Kytler Years brings me back to the mid 70s…when the old place..
was run by a lad from Goresbridge
Sad to hear of the death of Robbie Brennan. Had some great nights in the old Harcourt Hotel when he played under many guises including Hotfoot and Red Peters Band. Gone but not forgotten.
