Howdy Christy! I’m a young fellow that’s easy and bold, however can you tell us more about Lord Eric, Geoff Whittaker, and the Limerick Rake. They always seem to have flown under the radar. Agus fágaimíd siúd mar atá sé!

my only clear memory of that album is singing “Johnny Jump Up” with Barney McKenna
Hi C. Mise ar ais aris, I have re watched that TV programme, I won’t say how many times, it really is wonderful. I do hope it may be released on DVD. I googled Mark Mc Loughlin, he has a very impressive CV. It is interesting the socially aware artists & activists that you collaborate with, but not surprising. Mark has also worked with your other collaborator Brian Maguire on the very serious subject of femicide in Mexico. I have seen many of his productions without realising that he had produced them . All details of his work and philosophy are on http://www.bangbangteo.com And to top it off, he is Director of the New Dingle Film Festival and resident san Riocht and some websites say he is actually a Kerryman, sure that explains it all !! Beir bua agus beanncht. H

I had no idea that Mark was a Kerryman….if he is such, he keeps it to himself, rare enough that
He did a grand job on both the original film and last weeks doc…he has a few very interesting projects on the go…one of which is based in the enlightened Kingdom..
first I’ve heard about Dingle Film Festival..will the Daingeaneers be provoked… will the Healy-Rae twins come on board…maybe tar mac the picture house
Kerry v Tyrone looms but Salthill comes first…the wagons are ready to roll
A gloomy day has, once again, been brightened by the newsletter from http://www.folkradio.co.uk – excellent info inc folk show 100 + numerous features – in particular, John Francis Flynn and a cracking good piece on Ye Vagabonds, afloat on an inland waterway tour of Ireland. So much quality music…
Hello Christy.
Liam’s music contains whole countries. It feels weird that he wasn’t immortal, just like David Bowie. I listen to Liam nearly every day. I wish I’d heard him live, in a small room without a microphone.
Those people who were at that little gig on your documentary were so lucky.
Seem to be maudlin’ this morning. Need to shake it off, grab the harp and dive into Reel in the Flickering Light. What a great song. When I’m singing it there’s no room for anything else.
Me and Steve are going to have a play tomorrow with him on the pipes and me on the bodhran.
Hello Christy,
I find slip-jigs pretty mind bending.
They kind of go
Di ge de Di ge de Di ge de
I think. But sometimes all the bits of the tune seem to start at the wrong time.
I’ve seen Rocky Road described as a Hop too. I don’t know what that it.
Liam left his pipes to Na Piobairí Uilleann…they are loaned out to young Pipers who possess the skills to utilise them ….I’ve heard both his concert set and his B flat set played by young pipers in recent times…his music archive is in the possession of The Irish Trad Archive….watched a lovely documentary a while back where the Piper Louise Mulcahy visited Liam’s archive and home as well as playing his pipes
Hello Christy,
Just musing here on the stuff in your documentary. I was supposed to be working so I couldn’t give it all my attention. Maybe about 98%.
The thing that’s jumping out right now is Rocky Road to Dublin. I love your version of it. The obsessive slip jig that’s usually done can be pretty maddening to a percussionist.
I like how you let that peep through but also gave it some space and let it pull itself apart. A real folk singer’s free version. Never heard it done like that before.
Rebecca
Christy's reply
that was a sound-check off-the-cuff version…I think the beauty of this song gets lost betimes in strict adherance to the slip-jig (?) rhythm…sometimes it can sound like a cross between a 100yard sprint and a breath-holding competition….
Good evening Christy,
I stumbled today over a couple of decent new releases, one a song from the outrageously talented David Keenan, though in the video i am not sure if he is being too serious or just laughing at the viewer.
Then a marvellous rendition of Peggy Gordon, by Lisa O’Neill and the supreme musician Colm Mac Con Iomaire.
Have you ever sung it live, perhaps in the days of your arran sweater?
Anyway Colm’s version just feels like it could have been Sheila Stewart or Margaret Barry swinging the legs and singing along while Pecker Dunne plucked the banjo with the horse clipping along in front of the cart.
Very moving.
Rory

Peggy Gordon was in early set lists….looking back at ’66 set lists the only songs that have survived are Cliffs of Dooneen,Spancilhill and Curragh of Kildare…
That dog gets mentioned a few times. Its forebears must have met an Irish wolfhound somewhere way back!
D, that ‘post’ is shocking slow for whatever you’re waiting on.
I hope those in UK can get watching the prog on Real Player and soon. I see a few solutions being thrown about. Can be messy. You can watch it on mobiles or you cant watch it on mobiles; messy.
West Cork brings back happy memories of family trips. It’s finally stopped raining here – hopefully, you’re out and about.
I’ve just been reading about Kate Bush’s ‘Hounds of Love’ album. I’ve always liked Kate, but don’t know a lot of her music. So, it was a surprise to see that Liam O’Flynn, Donal Lunny and Danny Thompson joined her on the recording… it got me thinking how busy Liam must have been. I can’t find a definitive list of his credits, but there’s some good info about him at http://www.allcelticmusic.com . ‘legend’ for sure…
Hello Christy and All,
I’ve got it working.
You’re bang on Hilary. You have to fool it into thinking you’re in Ireland. You do this by going into your VPN and telling it that you current location is Ireland.
Hi C Sunny day san Riocht..another post from me ! I ‘m not great on technology..it seems the link to the TV prog I shared can only be viewed from a PC and not from a mobile phone,, go figure ,it was exactly the same with the BBC link I shared yesterday… !!! Also it seems it cannot be viewed outside of Ireland… UNLESS.. people with vpn accounts change their settings so that the server thinks that their location in the vpn settings is in Ireland.. whatever that means ???? I have been onto RTE to suggest they release the prog as a DVD.. fingers crossed, provided you agree and contracts can be negotiated etc.. Enjoy Beara… beir bua agus beannacht. H

Hello Christy and All,
Thankyou so much Christy for taking the time to listen to my video and for giving such wonderful and kind feedback. It means the world to me.
Also Thankyou to Rory for his concise and clear explanation of current travel restrictions in the UK. We have to laugh at it otherwise we’d all go nuts.
Makes me think of the sessions at the Grove before they got shut down. We were all fine, counted into a room as long as we were sitting down and breathing through a teabag, except for the barmaid who could be standing sitting or walking.
The open mic is starting again, but not the folk club yet, that’s still online on a Friday night.

There’s stuff here, plus Seamus Ennis playing it and info about the set of pipes. They’ve, been owned by both him and Liam O’Flynn, I’m not sure who owns them now.

SKY News running an excellent piece about the Afghanistan National Institute of Music.
http://www.anim-music.org looks superb… if ever there’s an example of music keeping spirits high – let’s hope ANIM survives and all are safe.

What a cracking show last night Christy. Well done to all. Looking so forward to live gigs again. Keep on missing out on current ones.

Christy,
I’m sitting here in Westmeath, listening to to singing Mick Blake’s sing, ‘Oblivion.’
It put me in mind that you might take a listen to my own song ‘Tears of Palestine’, which I wrote earlier this year.
There is a link below to listen to the song on my bandcamp page, and I have copied the lyrics here too.
https://andrewlawlor.bandcamp.com/track/tears-of-palestine
Tears of Palestine
The women and children of Rafa
Are crying but no one can hear
No one feels their sorrow and suffering
Or the salt of their hard-gotten tears
The hopeless young men of Gaza
For whom peace is a forgotten dream
The unwanted detritus of warfare
Swept away by a monstrous regime
On a hillside above East Jerusalem
On a terrace in mid-morning sun
There’s a ringside seat with shakshouka
Which is guarded by young men with guns
As the bulldozers move on the village
And raze Arab homes to the ground
Despite all the wailing and crying
It’s a picture without any sound
The sacred waters of Jordan
Where Jesus was baptised by John
Run red with the blood of the fallen
And the slaughter it goes on and on
The dispossessed children of Nakba
Cry for the loss of their land
While the world watches on with indifference
And their tears disappear in the sand
In Washington dark puppet masters
Speak from both sides of their tongues
While they feed the Zionist monster
With rockets and bullets and bombs
In a glass tower on the East River
Our leaders talk a good game
But when all of the talking is over
All that’s left is our anger and shame

Here’s a link with instructions on how to do it. So far I haven’t managed to get it going.

West Cork sounds lovely. A bit of relaxed and creative strumming and singing away from work? I hope so.
