The Nokia is sticking the times well…. getting better with age , like all good things. Great talk with Pat on Newstalk.
Waiting patiently for post / courier to arrive…..
Christy's reply
Its the divil, trying to hold thon Nokia up to my ear with my shoulder, play the guitar, sing the ballad wondering can ye hear it out there from Glenties to Germany and back around by Santiago
Hi Christy,
Well; IT has arrived “The early Years”. It looks fantastic, and what a line up of tracks and Footage…….just means that I am unavailable to all callers next weekend. Will have to do the Saturday night Gig thing ; have the Spuds, lash on the Aftershave and head for the front row, then go off into that lovely place where everything else gets blocked out including Covid……just Music and Songs for 2 Hours !!!.
I joined your journey back in the Seventies, so its no wonder I’m so looking forward to this.
Ride Onn Christy and KEEP SAFE; The vaccine is on its way.
There’s a contact box on Derek’s website – he might help re Harry B. But,I can easily e mail Guardian obits (Liam/ Tommy Peoples ?) and maybe,Juno/Andy might be able to extract images from text, unless they’re embedded. Whichever obits you want, no probs to send from Derek’s list.
Hello Christy, it sounds like your browser doesn’t like the website. Are you using Internet explorer? It might be worth trying Chrome instead of Internet explorer.
Rebecca
Christy's reply
Rebecca….I’m slightly embarrassed to admit that I have no idea what you mean….many years ago I had a bicycle with Chrome handlebars
Oh dear, I meant that the bank would been a more interesting place because Christy was in it. What I put before could have meant anything, sorry.
Christy's reply
in 1964 I was a cashier in the National Bank in O’Connell Street,Dublin…. an extremely nervous masked youth approached the counter and addressed me..”all right you sticker, this is a fuck-up”
Just looked at the ‘publications’ section of http://www.derekschofield.com in more depth – there are numerous ,well written obituaries of musicians, likely to be familiar to you/companeros here D
Christy's reply
is it poss to remove the photos from the text..any advice ???
It sounds like a good start to the week – more quality from RTE, I assume. Certainly, our profit, the bank’s loss re your career in words and music.
I’m grateful for pointers towards the work and legacy of Martin Egan – the world is a better place for such mavericks. I spent a chunk of this morning wandering his online imprint.
I’ve also ,found some good info about the work of a Northern bloke of your acquaintance in the early years – Harry Boardman (a name probably familiar to Pam, too),His song/folklore/history legacy is superb and well documented on the website of an associate at http://www.derekschofield.com The lengthy piece on Harry is first on Derek’s list of projects – a few entries further down, he mentions writing obits for ‘The Guardian’ – there are several that we’ve riffed about here – notably, Liam Og O’Flynn and Judy Dyble. Fine tributes.
Enjoy Atkin time after a busy morning…
Dave

I’m curious, I know it’s hard to pick your favourite child, but of all the tracks on the fabulous new “Early Years” album, which is/are your personal favorite rediscovered gems? Looking forward to Volume 2 as well………please God.
Christy's reply
As with children, as you rightly say, simply impossible to make such a choice…..most certainly impossible to share..such a notion would certainly be locked away in the darkest recess….to pick one and suffer the wrath of 41…..I heard 4 of them on the Pat Kenny this morning, twas like meeting 4 old friends
Good morning Christy,
we totally agree with Colm, FANTASTIC to hear you just now!!! Pat Kenny did a good job and we only had the chance to listen to the interview with the help of our fabulous “Rose” – a big THANK YOU to her!
GO RAIBH MAITH AGAT for your lovely reply,
Traudel
Begob C, you could have wound up bank manager in Athlone. Seeing as you’ve already mentioned that a forebear had been a bank manager here. Oh, could I see myself coming in to “Mr Moore” with his collar and tie and suit on him and glaring at me over his half-moon specs: “Mr Coyle, your last loan remains unpaid, never mind me giving you another loan….”
Christy's reply
my last Branch was Ballyhaunis…when I jacked it in the Manager was aghast…”what about your pension” asked Mr O’Leary ( he was a decent man, one of the very few Managers for whom I had respect, ) I was 21 and a pension was not very high on my list
You being a songster Ed, I’m certain I’d have concocted some scheme to facilitate your application
That was a grand interesting interview just now on newstalk.
Great to hear your voice CM ..it sounded just grand …the sound of this lockdown era …singing and talking down the phone
I just loved that interview with andy down on the pier.
Questions :Was that lad that cast his shadow at the end going for a November swim? I wish I was that lad and walked down the pier and bumped into CM singing away!.
Does the tide come up there where you were sat?
Do any boats ever swim in and tie up there.?
I relate to you saying you are going to hug your family .Haven’t put my two arms around dadó and mamó since March.I always stay at a distance. Its the only thing I want to do.
CS
Christy's reply
Hey CS..Andy and I were in the Coal Harbour .It lies adjacent to the West Pier of magnificent Dun Laoghaire Harbour which is a wonder of my world. Worryingly wee have pricks slavering as they dream of closing it to the public….they fancy a halting site for gigantic cruisers, or an almighty hotel ( maybe The Donald would build it for them) I’d better halt my rant here.
Always good to hear from a young songster…..I send best wishes to you ,RS and all the family….with winter upon us the technicolour bedspread is bringing warmth to the leaba….I hope the garlic is setlling into your ridge….that your asals are making sense, your instruments ringing, your spirit intact……hopefully we can all hug our loved ones before too long… something we will never take for granted again…keep coming back
In reply to N in Bury, still waiting for my copy of Early Years to arrive…
Fingers crossed not much longer.
Just on listening to Vicar Street, an awesome cover of ‘First Time’ got me choked… All the best to everyone.
Back to isolation and music!!! Bryan.
Christy's reply
Every time I hear this song I think of the picture Ewan and Peggy’s Son shared with me………Ewan in a cubby hole, under the stairs, with a one octave casio….writing the tune before the lyrics…..
Hello Christy,
It looks like we’re all keeping the shops busy with versions of the wonderful Early Years. When I saw the white vinyl I had to have it, so now I’ve had to buy a turntable too. Someone gave me a record player when I lived in Rusholme but I’ve no idea where it is now. Neither of them are here yet, so I’ve had to download it like Rory.
This place is buzzing. I’m trying to keep up withe videos.
Pam, do you have a smartphone? If you do, I’d be happy to help you get a music app onto it and download the Early Years so you can listen straight away. Just let me know if this is something you’d like to do and I’ll try my best to help.
Rebecca
Hi Christy, just doing a catch-up of your guestbook. A quick thanks to Rory for incredible video featuring Martyn Bennett, my son’s a great fan. Also to Dave for link re. Percy Kelly, saw an exhibition of his years ago.
All the great feedback for your album – haven’t got mine yet! Live in Summerseat a village on outskirts of Bury not too remote, we have running water, so why has everyone else in UK got it. Hopefully this week! Pam

Thanks again for humouring me and for the kind words, and also to Easkey appreciate it,
What a great call by a Kildare companero – Lisa O’Neill is totally absorbing – brilliant song/film too . I was transfixed by her solo NCH lockdown gig. Fair play…

I think often of Martin Egan…a unique man, a good friend and, betimes, a wild and wonderful source of almighty craic..
I first encountered him when Planxty went to play on the Aran Islands in 1972..a small gaggle of listeners came with us on the Ferry..
in the 80s I used to visit Martin in Annascaul….
I still hear his laugh..still feel his emotion..
