Even tho they were not your typical Folk Club organisers, Harris & Appleton ran a good old Club way back in the day…I often think back on the great variety of clubs that existed then, each one distinctive with its own quirks and foibles…and their was such strong genre distinction too..very few clubs had such a broad booking policy as the MSG….when I first hit Suffragette City in ’66 I planned my entire week around the Daily Folk Column in The Manchester Evening News…
Monday…. Singers Club …MSG
Tue…………Wellgreen with Tony & Arthur …run by Pete Wilmot
Wed…….St Clares Victoria Ave…..run by Fr Fritz (heard The McPeake Family here)
Thu……….Crown & Anchor with The Beggarmen
Friday……The Grapes………Frank Duffy

lots of great singers and songs, plenty of good company and fine ales….we supped some stuff !
Hello Christy,
Oh yeah! I’ve listened to the first 21 tracks. I only stopped because I have to practice now. Loads more to go. It’s a brilliant thing so far. I’m loving the energy. There’s a bit of fab 8 bar blues on the piano in there. I’m still laughing.
Video and interview still to go. It’s like Christmas.
Talking of Christmas, has anyone else seen loads of people putting up Christmas trees already? It’s been a long year so far.
Rebecca
Loved the early years chat Christy. The story telling is missed just as much as the songs. Hopefully the clouds will clear soon and we’ll be back on the road.
Hi yes the Bobby Sands was on zoom.it was excellent stuff.Colm scullion should be brought into every history class in Ireland .
Also saw the video for the peoples kitchen ..lovely cm.I’m very interested in that hat .It looks warm.
I cant work with the cumbersome shovel (sluasaid )I always have to go back to the spade or “láí” .
Theres an interesting saying here
“Ní chuirfeá amach ar shluasaid é,” literally means you wouldnt put him out on a shovel but it really means.. hes not worth bothering about…
Well I think the slusaid / shovel is the one not bothering about! Don’t forget your spade …CS
Christy's reply
I’ve just remembered..I was working on a site in London in 1966…I saw a man cooking a fry-up on a shovel..rashers and sausages over an outdoor fire on a cold winters morning
Hi Christy. A huge thank you for your lovely and generous video to the volunteers at People’s Kitchen Belfast tonight. It was heartwarming and I have received a lot of feedback from many of the volunteers asking me to pass their thanks on. It means a lot to us all that a man of your standing and history in battling for causes of social justice, would take so much time, and put so thought and kindness into your message.
The rendition of ‘A pair of brown eyes’ was a beautiful touch. Hopefully, we will finish the song, and add a few others when you visit the People’s Kitchen. Be assured of a warm welcome, the kettle is on! Go raibh maith agat mo chara.

Well done all you Belfast People’s Kitchen Volunteers…I look forward to seeing you all when we get our vaccinations
Just watched extra time and penalties……..yesssssss.
We now need a song for the euros please Christy

.I have a lovely post lady ..I just spent the day planting garlic with your new album “The early years “on repeat in my headphones. What a gift of a selection of 42 songs.A lovely job all round.I like the photo of you with the beard inside.A big comhghairdeas.
I really loved that zoom call that was just fantastic. All that information .I hope they post it somewhere to watch again You look just grand.

CS.(16)..which zoom call you referring ?
may your garlic thrive….very impressed with your ridge..I fell into a sweat at the mere sight of your shovel….did you see the Bobby Sands lecture on Trasna na Tire last night ?…it will soon be posted on youtube
If you/fellow listeners fancy some mellow.atmopheric (what some may call ‘miserable’)sounds – especially apt for short Winter days – I’ve just rediscovered the very LP…
‘Crow’s Bones’ – a collaboration for Opera North (good pieces on youtube) The maestro is Martin Green, with Becky Unthank and Inge Thomson in leading roles. I saw it in a cosy venue on a cold night a few Winters ago.As Becky hit the minor notes and the instrumental drones kicked in,the temperature fell…Not to everyone;s taste,I’m sure, but worth a go…
I hope you visited the ace Afflecks Palace http://www.affleckspalace.co.uk . former department store, with great pop culture mosaics on the outside.
Rebecca – when it’s legal to play, and hopefully,it survives – Cross Keys Folk Club, Uppermill – near as dammit a half way house.Played there for decades – we’ll be welcome!
Great to see some sun- lifting the mood from the unelected/elected grifters causing chaos.
Heard a great Springsteen line earlier – ‘too many outlaws working the same line’ – Dave
Hello Christy,
I’m sorry if it looked like I could suggest I might play with you, I really didn’t mean that at all, however the world may work in day dreams. I’m only just starting out, I’ve been learning the harp since November 2018 and putting it together with the voice since February 2019. It’s only a solid base of musical experience that’s allowed me to get on so fast. I can tell the difference. I’m hoping to get better at winging it as I go on. What I meant was that maybe Dave might think it could be fun to play together if we’re in the same place.
I think you’re right about Brighouse folk club being in the Anchor. Brian Highley sounds like quite a guy. The grove open mic has now gone online. They had the first session last night. It looks like it was a bit of a challenge. There is a comment on Facebook saying “what button do I press to go live” and its got 52 replies.
Notes in the voice. Those two notes I mentioned are the ones I found easiest as I started to use my voice more. I’m thinking that, because it’s a living thing, certain notes feel slightly different to others because you’re the player and the instrument too. It gives us a chance to get the instrument’s point of view.
I’m so looking forward to your new album arriving here.
Rebecca

Brian Highley was also involved in running the legendary Krumlin Festival at Barkisland in 1970… a great concept which has gained legendary status ,unfortunately, for all the wrong reasons
Enjoy the buzz of a new release.’Early Years ‘ is due to land on my door mat early next week – greatly anticipated!
Pam’s mention of ‘Magic Village’ took me back even further than early years of your music…I was too young to blag into that venue, but saw the ads and heard the tales… there are some good photos and info here- about many more lost venues/night too… http://www.manchesterbeat.com
Enjoy the day

I got my wires crossed re “Magic Village”..I was thinking of a large indoor market nr Piccadilly which had lots of stalls selling arts, crafts and “head” gear
I have not sent a link before, hope it works.
The museum at croke is an inspirational place and i visited several times …..there are, rightly, many Lest We Forget moments in history Christy, and this is certainly one .
Even Hill 16 gets a check out on the Where i Come From album, which is a great version of Lisdoonvarna Christy, a song that i presume will evolve constantly from it’s birth til it is no longer sang ( which i hope is the 12th of never).
Cheers

Thanks Rory…it works..
The Abbey Theatre have invited me to contribute a song to this Commemoration
To be clear: Damien McNairney at email address he left here is same person who responded from Down Diocese when I emailed St. Patrick’s in Belfast question about donating.
Christy's reply
I’ve been speaking to Damian….I hope to visit The Peoples Hostel on my next visit to Belfast….Senator Frances Black also supports these Volunteers
St. Pat’s kitchen in Belfast does not yet have a PayPal link on facebook. Sorry I didn’t get that straight. I think election distorted my thoughts more than I knew. Damien emailed me PayPal info with a charity number. I saw his picture in a news article and am sure the money isn’t going to Nigerian gangsters, but I’ll mail a check. I think he’s working a lot of things there and the PayPal link must be taking more time than planned.
