Dear Christy,
Thank You and Andy so much for your Early Years Chat!!!
Simply wonderful to see and hear you singing and talking about some of the “old” songs. You chose a beautiful scenery for the video, I loved the sound of the sea in the background too and the whistling bird – was it an oystercatcher?
Now I’m waiting with great expectation for the delivery of my album, hope it won’t take too much time to cross the water.
Also liked to read Leagues O’Toole’s very interesting article and the grand interview with you. Many thanks for this link too.
Keep well and safe,
Traudel

Thank You Traudel.
There have been hundreds of interviews
BUT, for me,this one was very special
Sitting with my Son in the Winter Sun
the Sea lapping beside us,
the wind shaking the sound,
the sea birds gawking
Andy and I chatting about the few songs
the backdrop of Graffiti,
it was most memorable ….
Christy, you’ve a thesis of lyrics and songs done throughout the year. I’ve recently come across a song by Lisa O’Neill of Dublin. Very genuine hard hitting song about days gone by of coal workers on the docks of Dublin and loosing their jobs to the march of time and machinery. It’s called ‘ Rock the machine’ . Ever since I’ve heard it I’ve been imagining it sung by yourself. I’ve tried it myself using G,C and D and it’s fine but it has a nuanced tone that a more experienced person could do it some justice. Have a look at it regardless and hopefully some day I’d love to hear a cover of it!

I’m glad you like Percy Kelly’s work. For anyone interested in knowing more, Chris Wadsworth (in the film)runs a website and is very involved in exhibiting/promoting Percy’s art.
A great call by Rory about Martyn Bennett’s evocative music. In similar vein across media, I find http://www.caughtbytheriver.net to be a rich resource of diversions.
Good morning Christy and 4711ers.
Great shout as always from Hilary.
The ‘new’ album just growsxand grows on me, magical.

The world is a good place today.
So how about checking this out.
I know i keep banging on about Martyn Bennett but this is an uplifting piece of musical genius, of human daring and of the beauty of nature.
I know it is old hat, and most folk will have seen it, but the music is fab too from the much missed Martyn Bennett ,and if there is a more aweinspiring video out there than this then i have yet to see it.
Cheers Rory

I’ve just found this short BBC film that covers his life really well and thought you/fellow readers might be interested. In the ‘it’s a small world’ feeling, the guy interviewed is an ex colleague!
Loved it Dave…..reminds me of singers who hoard their precious treasures….thank you for sharing Percy Kelly with us….there is an atmosphere that permeates his work
Hi C. you are the generous gift that keeps giving, lockdown sessions, interviews and these new releases. Its so great to have a record shop in town, if I had known how good this bundle was going to be I would have taken the day off yesterday to immerse myself in the DVD & CDs !! Its like Christmas has come early ! so many glorious and rare gems, including some songs I ‘ve never heard before. And to see the members of the various Orchestras all so young and playing such range of instruments. Aside from Declan Mc Neilus whom I do’nt believe I ever saw before it reminds me of nights in Woodies or Horans or the Gleneagle, I got my first car in Dec 1979 so all that 80s stuff is really nostalgic, did I spy a young Freddie White sidestage ? So far my top favourites are Tim Evans, Wave up to the Shore, Deportees, Trip to Jerusalem & Galtee Mountain Boy, The Sun Is Burning but its all wonderful , your wicked humour imbues it all as does your unique One Voice. As others have noted the sleeve notes are a mighty companion to the songs, I hear that Leagues is looking at re publishing The Humours of Planxty which would be more good news !! Maybe Universal may unearth other treasures, if we are lucky. Go raibh mile maith agat agus beir bua agus beannacht go deo. H

‘ve been looking forward to ‘Early Years’ since it was first mentioned. It’s even better than I expected – similar to the box set, in that there are so many layers and fine songs, old and new. I like the remastered ‘Prosperous’ songs, especially.I’m very fond of the LP as I bought it soon after its release, but there’s now a nice ‘full’ sound to the uber tight ensemble playing. It must have been a ‘light bulb ‘time when Planxty began to germinate…
I’m looking forward to a jam with harps and pipes, Rebecca…a new experience, but I was blessed to see /hear Liam Og O’Flynn a good few times, and sit near Gabriel McKeon, when he played support at a 70s Christy solo gig in Slane,Co Meath. Hello Christy,
I’ve just read the interview.
When I was writing yesterday about your album I tried so hard to say what I thought. The pure drop from the interview is right there. I’d add that it’s combined with a touch of rough magic, the energy of that time of life.
I asked to hear more about the instruments point of view. But I’ve been thinking. It written 10 foot high, in the performances?
Steve’s practice set is about to turn into a half set. His drones will be here soon. Depending on timing, he might be ready to start playing out as I explore new places. He’s going at it full tilt I wonder if Dave has ever played with a piper? Steve’s teacher has a beautiful Irish wolfhound that I am very keen to meet.

As so often, your great memory triggers past venues here…
Many of the 60s Manchester folk clubs you recall were still going when Nightshift kicked off in the early 80s and I’ve shared bills with a few of your companeros. Don Frame RIP did a weekly MEN gig last, which was bible for us too!
In addition to mt local folk club (where I first heard you)Harris and Appleton set up the two marguee based festivals in Platt Fields.I vividly recall your set, whilst also seeing the Ian Campbell band,Mr Fox,Magna Carta,Ralph McTell and a few local ‘floor singers’ who rewarded with support slots on the ‘big stage’.
Also, a less pleasant memory from the ‘old days’ – the smell of smoke,on clothes and instruments.I’ve never smoked, but probably inhaled a pack of 20 some nights!
Last, but not least…without the Bank Strike might there have been an Ireland based, semi pro folkie/sessions player- so a very different life for you – and, certainly a different ‘early years’.
Over and out from bunker chunnerng – away to meet Rambling Robin now (and recalling my 20 yo self)

Hi Christy,
Just watched your chat with your son. I could listen to you talk about and sing the songs all day and all night. I pre-ordered the Early Years awhile ago but it’s still on it’s journey over from Ireland. All the talk of the tunes on the guestbook have got me very anxious to hear them. My son, who attends university at UCD, says he will go buy the album and play it over the phone for me if I like. Good kid! Hope to get over to see you live very soon. Feeling thankful for your music, the possibility of a Trump-free world and all of the beauty that still exists in these strange times. All the best!

Fair play to those involved with track sequencing for ‘early years’.eg placing Dalesman and Deportees as neighbours is one of several great combos…
also, clever to finish with such an early song. The chunky jazz chords are a wonderful surprise to hear – part of such a great tale…
