September greetings from Northern Germany, dear Christy – hope this finds you in good health and spirits. Good luck with your concerts in Belfast tonight and tomorrow!
I trust you won’t mind me to use this space to spread some news: The great John Spillane has written a fine book of songs and stories, the title is „Will we be Brilliant or What?“ and it has a foreword by no other than Christy Moore! The book is now available from CollinsPress in Cork. A good read for anyone who loves (like me) Johnny’s songs like ‚Gortatagort‘ and ‚Magic Nights In The Lobby Bar.‘
Christy's reply
Hey Petra…lovely to read you spreading the good news….those 2 songs you mention feature among my favourite songs…I am a fan of all things Johnny Spillane…his songs, his TV programmes, his friendship, his banter
Christy, any chance of giving my Wife Roisin a mention Tonight.. 16 years Married and “The Voyage” started us off with our first song as husband & wife?? Looking forward to the Waterfront Tonight !! Good Luck Christy
you hear the gigs in Santiago Bay…all thru the good deed of our Tralee Rose who records most of the gigs and shares them so generously with far flung listeners..thats kinda lovely and lively in itself….
such a different approach to those who stick their gadgets in the air oblivious to the unfortunates seated behind them who must sit in the glare of their infernal iPhones, tablets and iPads..
I encourage anyone distracted by this downright ill-mannered behaviour to inform the protagonists of their ire…it is unacceptable and the instrument wielders should be thus informed….a gentle hint at first, perhaps something like “get that fucking iPad outa my vision or I’ll shove it up your insensitve thick arse”…a gentle hint like that might do the trick
43 years today… Victor Jara lives on.
What a lively gig in Vicar Street for the rape crisis center. Great harmonies.
Keeping my ears to the ground on the side of our world. Xx
Christy's reply
always a pleasure to see your name appear from far off Chile….we will remember Victor Jara tonight in Belfast….
Hi Christy,
Just wanted to say thanks for yet another brilliant performance in Armagh on Wed night. Clear to see from the off that you were in great form. A perfect night of thought provoking songs alongside the constant high level of humour that always runs through your gigs. Took along a good friend steeped in music and concerts but had never been to a Christy gig, suffice to say he now kneels at the shrine and curses not listening to my good advice down through the years. It is certainly true that you just keep getting better each time, and I say that genuinely as a long hauler. I hollered for Hattie and you duly obliged, thanks.
Continued good health Christy to keep bringing your immense talent, humour and personal touch to every concert hall and community you can reach. Thanks also to Paddy and Mick and the crew for the special team effort.
Looking forward to the next one……………..
Decky.
Christy's reply
Hey Decky, twas great shake your hand after the gig in Armagh….not laid eyes on you for a few years so twas good to see you back…thanks for calling out “Hattie”,its always a great song to sing…Cathal Hayden had not played it before and found some beautiful fiddle riffs….
as the journey continues, thankfully we all have good health to keep resounding the songs, adding words and music along the way, refreshing old verses with new harmonies, meeting new listeners (like your friend) and greeting long haulers like yourself……
the crew remains intact, Paddy,Mick,Dikon, Johnny, David and Geoff ably assisted by Trevor and Miss Daisy plus all the local crews who weigh in at each port of call…everyone plays their part, none less then the countless listeners who throng the venues, who create special air through which to fly….
twas a grand night in The Orchard County Decky
Hi Christy,
Not sure if you’ll get this in time but anyways… me and my mrs are going to see you in the Waterfront tomorrow night (17th Sep), my wife has just got news yesterday that her only sisters 7 month old little girl has a tumor behind her eye(they live in Aus which makes it a little tougher), we trust in god all will be well, but if you could mention her or dedicate a wee song, McIllhatton ‘d great, we’d b forever grateful. The power of positive thinking is a wonderful thing!!
Christy's reply
has the girl got a name Seamroga ? where in Oz is she? hope it goes well
Just watching the late late Christy. seems everyone’s singing the same aul song. Micheal English performing his new single Tuam beat. Crackin gig in Vicar St last week, Victorias chorus in the song she sang would have ya floating off your seat. Enjoy the football Sunday, hopefully not too one sided.
Christy's reply
Its great that the songs are getting covered by other singers…good news too for Padraig Stevens….The Tuam Beat is a great song..
I’m up in Down at the minute doing some gigs in Ulster…some crack in Armagh and Newcastle and now we move on to Belfast….
I would’nt worry about Sunday being one sided…I reckon Dublin will give Mayo a good game !
Have you all got you tickets for The Women’s Intermediate All Ireland Final…Kildare v Clare…The Lilies v The Banner
Heres hoping all Lily Whites will turn out and support our Women…see you there
I have just finished reading Eimear O’Callaghan’s Belfast Days…A 1972 Teenage Diary written during the bloodiest years of the troubles. You played with Planxty in Queen’s University that year and in Belfast many times during our dark days when few ventured in to our neck of the woods…go raibh míle maith agat a Christy! We are looking forward to seeing you tomorrow night in the Waterfront and delighted that we are in row four!
Christy's reply
I remember that gig in McMordie Hall in 1972…we did an Ulster tour with John Martyn…I recall we were stopped by “The Specials” (by then calling themselves The UDR) very late one night after a gig (I think ) in Coleraine…John could not believe what he witnessed on that dark country road….
Hiya Christy, Niamh Parsons here, I have a visitor tonight for a book launch tomorrow – Bill Caddick – just wondering will you be out (The book includes his John O’Dreams! which you and I love!)
Christy's reply
Hey Niamh..good to hear from you Singing Bird….please give my best wishes to Bill Caddick..its gotta be getting on for 50 years since I played in his Folk Club and (I think) slept in his house…I had a request for John O’Dreams in Armagh on Wed night..its a very big song up here in Ulster where I’m gigging at the moment…hope to see you at The Frank Harte…there was a great night in The Goilín last friday
Christy,
I have taken the liberty of sending you a song which I wrote based on the older Foggy Dew song. In this year of commemorating those who fought in the first world war I was moved to write what I think is a song that tries to give some reason why young Irish men, such as my cousin Edward McKnight, went and lost their lives in places such as Gallipoli. The line from the older song which begins with ‘ Better to die ‘neath an Irish sky than in Suvla etcc’.. disturbed me as it seems to dismiss the motivations of those who went to war. Edward was one of seven brothers from Limerick who joined up and while he died on the first day of his arrival in Gallipoli one of his brothers returned to Limerick, suffering from shell shock and subsequently died in what was then called the Madhouse in Limerick.
The song relies on the other more well know patriotic Foggy Dew song but I believe those who went and fought were equally as patriotic and deserve equal respect and honour. My song is a small attempt to give voice to those who have lain forgotten for so many years. I send it to you in the hopes that if you think it is worthy you might one day use it. I can think of no one better than your good self who has chronicled and been a voice for the marginalized and the forgotten for so many years.
Best Wishes for continued success.
Greg Carey
Lament for Edward Mc Knight
Drummer with the Munster Fusiliers
Died Gallipoli 25th April 1915
As down the beach one April morn to a hellish scene ran I
There armed lines of fallen men in several mounds piled high
The songs we sung as the bullets hum overhead our motley crew
But no Angelus bell o’er Gallipoli’s swell rang out for the red white and blue
Right proudly high through the darkened sky we unfurled our flag of war
If I am to die ‘neath a Turkish sky I do it for old Ireland too
And for the ranks of the Fusiliers my comrades all loyal and true
As the Turkish sons with their Gatling guns rained down upon the red white and blue
Now Redmond said if we would go our nation might be free
But in forgotten graves we lie under shade of a great palm tree
If we had died by Pearse’s side or fought with Cathal Brugha
Our names they would keep where the patriots sleep far from the red white and blue
My friends they fell with no requiem bell and their names now all disappear
But those who died in that raging tide were singing loud and clear
As we marched along in that April sun our hearts ablaze and true
We came to fight for our countries right not to bid our lives adieu
On the coal ship the Clyde we sailed in on the tide bullets ringing in our ears
In the heat of noon you could hear our tune rise up over Suvla’s waves
While our bright Brigade in a grand parade our flag we did unfold
A ragged band in no man’s land we’re the Munster Fusiliers
My name is Mc Knight and I fight for the right to fly our flag of green and gold
We fight with might to see freedoms light and never to be slaves
While the mustard gas that hung on the grass appeared like a foggy dew
It cut us down and we did drown falling into our waiting graves
Neath Turkish skies our hope there lies wrapped in the red white and blue
No fife no drum no colours hung over this our small tattoo
For my brother is dead and the rest have fled like the great Earls of yore
If he has died by Shannon side and not upon a foreign shore
We would have praised him high ‘neath the Limerick sky as a patriot true and true
But he fell instead ere he was wed wrapped up in the red white and blue
Now back again on Erin’s shore my heart with grief is sore
For at night alone by the pale moon light I can still hear the cannons roar
And the cries of the men that I know when we fought together side by side
In my dreams I see them marching along their eyes become a deathly hue
And I am left at close of day to tell what we went through
In this awful hell of fire and shell the harp and the shamrock grew
We fought and died neath the Turkish skies with the green inside the red white and blue

Thanks for sharing Greg…
young lads left for all sorts of reasons…many Irish families last loved ones..my Mother’s Uncle ,Joe Sheeran, marched off from Slane in County Meath..all that came back was the badge off his cap….
I’m reminded of Wally Page’s song
” All for The Roses”
Hes 25 hes sick and tired,
its time to try the other side
The B & I to Paradise
to sergeants and their men
he’s never been to Dún na Rí ………. (aka Kingscourt aka Doonaree)
nor combed the beaches after 3
chips and beer and greenery,
sergeants and their men
He signed and took the soldiers crest,
a dacent man in battle dress
when bugles blow you do you best
for sergeants and their man
he’s way ahead hes second to none
with his Fabrique Nationali Gun
marchin bands with Saxon blood
sergeants and their men
they landed with the sinking sun

they covered up and kissed with tongues
sergeants and their men

sergeants and their men
all for the roses
over the sea
all for the roses
Finglas Boys to be
now a flower of sleep grows on his grave
forgotten soon the cowards and the brave
but the coldest hate still lives today
for sergeants and their men
all for the roses

Hi Christy, my son Sean, texted me last night to tell me to check my messages. I did so and saw that he had sent a photo of his message and your reply to him from 8th Sep. He was very happy with your reply.
I’m off to Lisdoonvarna at last, at the end of the month.
I spoke to you once outside the Philharmonic Hall and said that I’d never been, despite living in Clare in the eighties and you said that it wasn’t too late.
I’m going on 29th Sep with my old mate, Tracy who is happily married.
She’s slightly concerned (I think it’s hilarious) about this being a match making festival but I’ve reassured her that it’s not just about that. (I’m single :-)) so she has told me she’s in my hands! i’m actually wondering a bit now, especially since my auntie that used to live in Clare said she’d come and ‘chalk our backs for us’
Do you know what she means?
