it has been a collective effort..the original idea came from a Volunteer in Dublin Rape Crisis Centre who described to me the cruel Government cutbacks in funding and the ongoing effect those cutbacks had on this vital service.
From the very start everyone came on board..the Band,The Crew, Vicar Street,Aiken Promotions and the Staff at DRCC. Thankfully the gig has sold out in advance and we are all here now rearing to go..we had a good rehearsal last night and a good sound check today…the listeners are gathering outside as we prepare to enter the zone….
personally I consider it a priviledge to play a very small part in the ongoing work of the DRCC….

Lovely to get this reminder of your Uncle Billy….he was always known as “Billy” around Newbridge but according to Ted Walsh he was “Willie”in Naas..we got a good tip when Santa Claus won his first race at the Curragh.. we got a nice few bob on at 18/1 and celebrated royally afterwards in The Harp Bar in Kildare Town. I remember Billy as being a friendly man always ready for a bit of crack. Like myself, he developed a fondness for the drop but it was always a pleasure to meet him.It was a great buzz around Newbridge when “one of our own” rode the winner of The Derby. But I’ll never forget that first outing on The Curragh..he must have won that race by 40 lengths

it was filmed as part of a series from The Abbey Tavern in Howth, County Dublin back in 1980…before the audience came in, 2 bottles of wine were put on each table.There were 40 tables. Knowing that most of the listeners were total abstainers we sought to reduce the temptation factor…the bodhrán player was feeling no pain by the time the gig kicked off, I was still on the juice…..there were six 40 minute programmes…as well as Planxty others featured included Jimmy Faulkner, Declan McNelis, Stocktons Wing, Ralph McTell, Mary Black, Mairtín Byrnes, De Danaan (I think), The Pavees (featuring Paddy Keenan), Tom Paxton and there may have been others…
Good morning Christy, hope you made it home safe and sound after what where two truly magical, mystical and memorable nights in the Maiden City. Driving home after last night I had on Highland Radio and the DJ, who had been at Fridays gig, was saying that how in all his years of going to your gigs he had never seen you better…I was thinking to myself Yeah, Friday was good and Saturday wasn’t bad either “Awesome To Behold” ..Loved every second and felt every heart beat, impossible really to pick out favourites or highlights it was that good but….I was glad to see the Honda 50 get a spin out and in honour of our Brian, also glad Joxer got a run out. “Cry Like A Man” was really special…Thank you for doing “The Hills” and the shout out for Boys from Donegal, I had four of the lads with me from the Club who were buzzing with the gig, You can’t beat the natural high that beautiful music brings. Declan & Jimmy in at left and right corner were top of their game as well. #PureGenius Great to meet the gaggle from all corners, it always does my heart good to see Anuk, first time for Mick and herself in Derry, first time for Kenneth as well. Always good to catch up Hilary & Adam …and the more local crew of John, Marty & Ger ….I feel truly privileged to be in your and their company. I’m off out to a bit of football for the afternoon then, you can’t beat a bit of Club Championship…My team Kilcar take on near neighbours Killybegs in what should be a handy enough affair, we have some serious firepower at the moment with the Mc Hugh’s and the Mc Brearty’s and I would be hoping we go on to win this years championship overall. I do miss not being involved in Club GAA…..I have great memories of following Moorefield back in the 50s when we were an Intermediate club..then we got promotion and won our first Senior Championship in 1962 ( I wrote a short song about it years ago, its in the book and its simple called “Moorefield” ..one man mentioned in that song is also mentioned in “Lily” another mentioned is the father of SoS who feaures in “Where I come from”)
Its a matter of great pride when ones County Team runs out in Croker but there is something even deeper when the local team togs off and trots out for a County Final…all the old neighbours are there….families that go back generations, former players from different eras, players that could have made it but fell by the wayside, porter sharks, spoiled priests, fellows mindin bikes, anyone for the last few choc ices, quare hawks, garda in civvies ( but still wearing the blue shirts) giggling maidens and nervous virgins, lusty altar boys plus lads and lassies home from England…..then the ball is in and the game is on

I have lost count of the number of times i have now seen you starting back at the Ballyshannon folk festival two many years ago to remember.. And never mind the years trying to book you to play the Slieve russell hotel in the early ninetys and the relentless phone calls to Mattie fox. All that aside would really love to hear you play Little Musgrave in the waterfront on the 18th as it will my wife and i 20th wedding anniversary and is her favourite Christy Moore song on your 6 CD box set

Thank you Christy for drawing me to a city I had never been to before. The taxi driver on hearing I was there for Christy Moore said, ‘sure you must have a rebel heart’. We went to the Free Derry Museum and we were so moved speaking to John Kelly about his brother. And I hoped for all the songs you sang. Minds Locked Shut and the Time has Come were perfect. And to hear Tyrone Boys was overwhelming. I was very pleased to be reunited with the brother Marty Mac from Donegal and the son from Wicklow. And the Scally Sean from Dubh. But my complete thanks must be to Hil for organising the tickets. Gratitude. I have a magnificent Christy family. I hope you all have a good evening and many more magic nights. next Thursday in Vicar St is a concert in Support of Dublin Rape Crisis Centre…thankfully it is sold out…..the Centre’s funding has been savagely cut which is why we got this gig together…to raise funds but also awareness of the threat these cutbacks bring to their essential service….dont know whether it will be a night for call outs but I never say never…hope your Da has a good night..I’ll keep an ear out for his harmonies

Just read your message… but its 2 hours after the gig !
Hamish meant so much to me….he was my friend and my mentor……when I first met him I was struggling.. it was in the MSG Club, Manchester in 1967…we hit it off straight away….he took me to Coventry the next night…called me up to sing 2 songs and got me a gig….he got me my first gigs in Scotland, introduced me to Owen and Ruth Hand,Billy Connolly, Gerry Rafferty, Bert Jansch, Barbara Dickson, Wee Danny Kyle,Aly Bain,The Corries,John Martyn, Josh McCrae, Archie Fisher,Red Billy, Big Pat,Watt Nichol,Tam Harvey, Mick Broderick, brought me to The Scotia, Sandy Bells, The Mucky Byre, The Elbow Room, The Police Club, The French Club, he let me drive his brand-new Volvo from Liverpool to Thurso non-stop (It was before the M74Motorway was built but we had chemical assistance )
more importantly he invited me into his home where I befriended his wonderful family Wilma,Vhari,Fiona,Jim and Mairrit….we still meet up occasionally and have a good natter
Hamish came to Ireland with me in 1969….he was an instant favourite with all my family who still recall his visits…of all the rapscallions and ragamuffins I brought home Hamish always remained my Mother’s favourite visitor
Hamish’s influence still runs right through my work…from watching him I learned the importance of communication with those listening….he was always completely honest with his audience nor did he ever hide his emotions…..I love his early recordings, hard to come by now….Hamish taught,helped,influenced and subbed manys the fledgeling folkie…some of us went on to fame and fortune but not all of us remembered

“You are welcome here kind stranger” rang out when Mike Waterson sang “The Lakes of Pontchartrain” to me late one night in 1967….he also shared “Van Diemens Land” that same night… we became good friends until he passed a few years back…the recordings he made with his family (The Watersons) were groundbreaking and still resound today as the family continue to sing and play. Mike also wrote “Stitch in Time”
Hope you are well and happy. I had every intention of dropping by sooner to thank you for a great night in Ballinasloe the month before last. It was a very welcomed break from the hecticness of life here, even if it was only a quick trip out the motorway 🙂
Once again, my mam missed out on the gig due to illness, but please god we will see you in Galway again soon and we’ll have her in tow. For now you can be heard blasting from her headphones inside of the ward of the hospital, while the card you so kindly signed for her last year hangs in its frame in pride of place at home. I was thinking during the week about when your at a house party and the songs are flying,what songs do you sing? Do ya slash out the Lisdoon or do you have your own songs that you like to sing that will never make a gig or a recording?
Also I see the coffeys clock has made a reappearance after going off for a refurb.

Will be attending your upcoming concert in the waterfront on sunday 18th september. I have lost count of the number of times i have now seen you starting back at the Ballyshannon folk festival two many years ago to remember.. And never mind the years trying to book you to play the Slieve russell hotel in the early ninetys and the relentless phone calls to Mattie fox. All that aside would really love to hear you play Little Musgrave in the waterfront on the 18th as it will my wife and i 20th wedding anniversary and is her favourite Christy Moore song on your 6 CD box set

That Ballyshannon Folk Festival must be nigh on 30 years ago….I recall a low marquee by a river, lots of rain, lotsa funlovin fleadhgoin cowboy hats and flagons….see you in a fortnight if all goes well

Thank you Christy for drawing me to a city I had never been to before. The taxi driver on hearing I was there for Christy Moore said, ‘sure you must have a rebel heart’. We went to the Free Derry Museum and we were so moved speaking to John Kelly about his brother. And I hoped for all the songs you sang. Minds Locked Shut and the Time has Come were perfect. And to hear Tyrone Boys was overwhelming. I was very pleased to be reunited with the brother Marty Mac from Donegal and the son from Wicklow. And the Scally Sean from Dubh. But my complete thanks must be to Hil for organising the tickets. Gratitude. I have a magnificent Christy family. I hope you all have a good evening and many more magic nights. His name is Greg Kearns and he plays guitar and sings your songs in every spare minute that he has! His voice is amazing! You genuinely are his idol. He is going to your concert in Vicar Street in Dublin on September 8th. Is there any way possible you could give him a mention? He would be so estatic and I would be the best daughter in the world!! next Thursday in Vicar St is a concert in Support of Dublin Rape Crisis Centre…thankfully it is sold out…..the Centre’s funding has been savagely cut which is why we got this gig together…to raise funds but also awareness of the threat these cutbacks bring to their essential service….dont know whether it will be a night for call outs but I never say never…hope your Da has a good night..I’ll keep an ear out for his harmonies

Kevin asked me to mention that he was working on the electrics in Hamish imlach’s house 13 floors up 1994 the day after we saw you play in Glasgow , Hamish extolled your virtues as he played Kevin some songs on his guitar and then showed Kevin a letter you had sent him before he put on your record on a bang and oliffsen player and cracked open a bottle of saki.
Maybe when you have seen this you can play one to his memory. Hoping also for the boy from tamlaghduft.

Hamish meant so much to me….he was my friend and my mentor……when I first met him I was struggling.. it was in the MSG Club, Manchester in 1967…we hit it off straight away….he took me to Coventry the next night…called me up to sing 2 songs and got me a gig….he got me my first gigs in Scotland, introduced me to Owen and Ruth Hand,Billy Connolly, Gerry Rafferty, Bert Jansch, Barbara Dickson, Wee Danny Kyle,Aly Bain,The Corries,John Martyn, Josh McCrae, Archie Fisher,Red Billy, Big Pat,Watt Nichol,Tam Harvey, Mick Broderick, brought me to The Scotia, Sandy Bells, The Mucky Byre, The Elbow Room, The Police Club, The French Club, he let me drive his brand-new Volvo from Liverpool to Thurso non-stop (It was before the M74Motorway was built but we had chemical assistance )
more importantly he invited me into his home where I befriended his wonderful family Wilma,Vhari,Fiona,Jim and Mairrit….we still meet up occasionally and have a good natter
Hamish came to Ireland with me in 1969….he was an instant favourite with all my family who still recall his visits…of all the rapscallions and ragamuffins I brought home Hamish always remained my Mother’s favourite visitor
Hamish’s influence still runs right through my work…from watching him I learned the importance of communication with those listening….he was always completely honest with his audience nor did he ever hide his emotions…..I love his early recordings, hard to come by now….Hamish taught,helped,influenced and subbed manys the fledgeling folkie…some of us went on to fame and fortune but not all of us remembered
Safe travels to all and looking forward to seeing you on the Banks of the Foyle. Nice event coming up on Saturday on Benone Beach – a barbecue to formally welcome our Syrian refugees. It’s great to read them say how welcome they have felt in Derry – they endured hard times to get here. It’s refreshing to see a welcome for the stranger. Hopefully they will have good lives as part of our community.
“You are welcome here kind stranger” rang out when Mike Waterson sang “The Lakes of Pontchartrain” to me late one night in 1967….he also shared “Van Diemens Land” that same night… we became good friends until he passed a few years back…the recordings he made with his family (The Watersons) were groundbreaking and still resound today as the family continue to sing and play. Mike also wrote “Stitch in Time”

Hope you are well and happy. I had every intention of dropping by sooner to thank you for a great night in Ballinasloe the month before last. It was a very welcomed break from the hecticness of life here, even if it was only a quick trip out the motorway 🙂
Once again, my mam missed out on the gig due to illness, but please god we will see you in Galway again soon and we’ll have her in tow. For now you can be heard blasting from her headphones inside of the ward of the hospital, while the card you so kindly signed for her last year hangs in its frame in pride of place at home. Music really does keep those spirits high on the tougher days. Thank you Christy. (And thank you Hilary for always being so kind to us). Enjoy the upcoming gigs until we catch up with you again.
