Really looking forward to hearing your new record
I really enjoyed the journey documentary and found it compelling viewing.
I would just like to take this opportunity to say thanks to yourself
I found myself having a tough time of it lately and the solace I found in your music is hard to describe
I found myself listening to the tunes in a new way and it helped in ways I Cant explain
Music has such healing powers. Thanks Christy
Thanks for that, keep the music rolling.
Another singer that is as real is as gets is an american artist, Jason Isbell. If you ever find yourself looking for new music, check this fella out and John Moreland
Christy, you could just re-register for 4711. True, the original Jack Power posts wouldn’t be tied to the reborn Jack but there’d be joy in truffling for them (well, maybe not all 702 of ’em).
Your contributions would breathe life back into the forum, and everyone would be delighted to greet the return of a nomad without a key – especially if you’ve got Lily with you ;~)
Back to one Q at a time: when a word or phrase triggers a tune, do you tend to revisit the whole song? xx
Christy's reply
I’ll try that out soon as…thank you….
I am constantly being reminded of songs…in the last week I have re visited Unfinished Revolution, Farewell to Pripijat, Among The Wicklow Hills, Sweet Music Roll on, Lanigans Ball, Johnny Jump Up….not necessarily with a view to gigging them, just to sing them here in the workroom, also got a few new songs worming into my ear, listening to the “Trad Outfit” gigs, some good versions reverberating
Hi Christy
Love what you’ve done and continue to do. I’ll be attending your upcoming gig in Halla na Feile Cashel. One of my favourite songs is Sweet Thames Flow Softly, loved your version with Sinead O’Connor, I listen and sing to it often. An uncle of mine from a place called Hitchen near London passed away recently and this song now always reminds me of him, he had a love affair with London but married by Aunt from Dualla just outside Cashel and became a regular on the same stage you’ll perform on in Halla Na Feile. I could go on but that’s the jist of it, I would love if you could perform this song when you play in Cashel, it would make my night.
Christy's reply
The Songs Of Ewan MacColl continue to reverberate….from Shadwell Dock to Cashel’s Rock…..I will endeavour to fulfill your request…”Flow Sweet River Flow”
Well Christy. Just to let you know Hilary was in contact with me and passed on a link to the Board Gais concert, which i was able to download and play. The wonders of modern technology! Thank you so much for asking her to get in touch. I can’t tell you how much i appreciate that. As i said to Hilary when replying since the concert i was only thinking if there was any way i could have recorded Cormac’s request it would have been class and now i have it. We were able to share the moment with all the family. As a friend of mine from Cork says every time someone does him a turn “may the Lord spare your health” (normally said when the person expects a few euro too, in typical Corkonian fashion, but i’ll buy your new album instead!!). Take care Christy and thanks again.
Christy's reply
Hilary has connected so many listeners with the songs over the past years…she has generously shared her personal recordings of gigs, always keeping an eye (and an ear) out for anyone in need of a “dig out”….we have a coterie of regular listeners amongst whom she is fondly regarded as their “Rose of Tralee”…….
When I set up this forum 12 years ago it was primarily for this very purpose…that listeners might have contact…that I might be contactable….I’m delighted that young Cormac now has access to his song….that he was still awake when I finally got around to playing it for him !!….
Thank you Helen Kay, after searching high and low, you helped a long hauler out and I got to see Journey. For me , I now can put the songs in a new light with the faces and people affected by the events and context of the music, all these songs Christy have changed your way of life and how you approach the subjects in song is very powerful , to me personally. I never thought much about the breakup of a gig, but dividing the 2hrs up got me thinking, At the start of the first episode, is that a new song or work in progress, on the subject of Newbridge? Seeing Paddy Hill got me mad and hurting for what was done to his own life and that of the fellow innocent victims. With your songs , you walk in the shoes of those that have been persecuted and to see Paddy smile when you sang was very emotional for me, I got that during several songs you performed on other issues, Nicky, Mary Manning, Veronica,..I get comfort in singing songs , always have, little musgrave for me was a labor of love , I had a smile for a week , when the picture in my head took me on the Journey, Thank you again Helen and Christy

Sure is Finbar….track 4 on “LILY” to be released this Friday….hope you find a few songs Fin…..its great when the work resonates..there are songs from 8 Irish (and one English) writers….Paddy Hill has been inspirational for over 30 years….since their 6 battered and broken faces appeared on the front of The Sunday World all those years ago…..through 18 years of campaigning from various lonely high-security cells across the UK (where even the screws knew of his innocence.)..to that day when he burst out of the courthouse having been finally freed….his first and only response was to focus on other Innocents still lingering behind bars….
Hi All. Summer is here,,,,and Lily too nearly….only 5 more sleeps…. from what we ‘ve heard at gigs its going to be amazing,,,,all that new material,,, well some of it ancient,,but all getting your touch,,,partnered by Declan and the ever expanding Band,,, I hope Vicky features. It was good to hear that Tuam Beat was on the RTE Radio playlist ….such a great tune,,,,so uplifting but with a message also,,,,I loved it from the first time I heard !! So wishing you the very best of luck with The Launch,,,,, you were surely invited onto the LLS ?? Beir bua agus beannacht. H

and the “Mick Blake” growing on you too.!!…..fair play H……will ye tame The Dubs this year ?…they threaten to become a dominating force which would be bad for our sport….their depth of choice, the enormity of their sponsorship deals, make it almost impossible for smaller counties to match their might….then again The Kingdom were utterly dominant a few years back, albeit for more organic reasons….it would be exciting for a “Leicester” to emerge… imagine if a Fermanagh,a Sligo,a Carlow or Waterford were to carry Sam to the nether regions …what that would do for our National game…..
Yes,twas great to hear “Tuam Beat” on the radio. It always marks the end of a cycle when an album gets a spin on the wireless…Ronan Collins was first up yet again…he has been the “early bird “of the airwaves….twas himself that latched onto the shovel 32 years ago and gave me the start
Hope all is good with you.
I have just had the wonderful experience of losing myself in your beautiful ramblings of Me And The Rose. It’s far too long since I last listened to it, but it was a lovely as ever. I think King Puck will stay in the machine for a while. Just wanted to say thanks.
Any plans to come to the North of Scotland?
Cheers,

Christy's reply
my first visit to the North of Scotland was to play in a Folk Club near Thurso…if memory serves, ( it was 1968) the club was in Dounreay in the Nuclear Reactor Social Club…I’ve been lit up ever since….we played Eden Centre Inverness about 10 years back, that was a good night..”I met wi’ Bogie O’ Cairnee and wi’ him I did agree”….nothing pending for way up North but life is full of surprises…we’ll take the high road yet
Really enjoyed the gig last weekend by the grand canal on a big stage. The records were non stop! Loved hearing lawless, bogman, furze, John O, and the time has come. But song of the night had to be black is the colour, the intro to that last Saturday night was one of the best I ever heard it’s up there with ride on from the Barrowland last year..
One thing that had me thinking during the week is your know how you speak about the dream you have of the place Newbridge but in theory the place hasn’t changed that much.Only some of us moved on and got bit older but the same things are still happening today as they did 50 years ago. Young rubber and lenny are doing the same as yourself and lunny done back in the day!!!! We are still mucking out horse shite, singing in the pubs, looking after our neighbours, footing the turf and cheering sarsfields home.. I was recently working in monkstown and as soon I opened my mouth the woman of the house said ” are you from Newbridge?” ” Feckin right I am ” I said!! Where would ya find it?
The new song” tuam beat” is already a classic!! Can’t wait for lily.
Are ya selling and signing the album through the website this time??
Christy's reply

Well Christy. Just a quick note to say thanks for a great concert last Saturday night in the Board Gais. I have seen you in many a venue over many years but I can’t recall ever enjoying a concert more. Great venue, great sound, great songs and music, great crowd all loving it and above all yourself and the musicians and singers with you were brilliant. Also a special thanks for giving a shout out to my son Cormac on the night. He really enjoyed his first concert. He was flagging a bit towards the end and was asking me what an encore was when you came back out and said his name and sang John O’ Dreams for him. His eyes lit up and he was back clapping and singing after that to the end and he fairly floated out of the place with a few of the women around us congratulating him on being a celebrity into the bargain!! Unfinished Revolution? This afternoon, I found Paul Doran’s 1984 demo for Natives on SoundCloud. It already had that thought provoking line about ‘ … those who are forced to choose, some will choose to fight’. But your mose exposed version allows the powerful lyrics to work with the lovely melody. ;~)
I’ve desperately been trying to watch “Journey” but living in the US seems to make it impossible. Any idea how to get to it for people who are not in Ireland? I’ll be going back home (Holland) in a few weeks, maybe you’d know if there’s a way to watch it there. It doesn’t feel right to know it’s out there and to not be able to see it! π
Oh and while I am at it, complaining and whining the Dutch way, when will you come to Atlanta? Tons of Irish here, I am sure you’d get a great audience here! I’ll be sitting front row!

I was at the Bord Gais gig on Saturday and what a great gig it was. It was great seeing your son up beside you keeping the legacy alive!
I brought my girlfriend with me for her first Christy gig and it’s safe to say it won’t be her last.
There was a song you played that was about ‘the gardener’ that you said was written by a man from Ballybrack. My girlfriend loved the song as it reminded her of her grandfather who passed away a short while ago.
I can’t seem to find it anywhere on the net, so I thought you might be able to point me in the right direction.
