2021 Hotpress Review

Christy Moore
Flying Into Mystery

Christy Moore once described himself as “a bringer of news” – and he’s never shirked from reminding us where we’re really at.  Sadly, the news hasn’t got much better recently.

As a result, there’s a generally wistful, sometimes downbeat feel, to much of Flying into Mystery the cumulative effect of which is to confront us with the increasingly fraught issues of the day.

Name-checking Greta Thunberg, ‘Clock Winds Down’, written by Jim Page – who wrote the Moving Hearts classic ‘Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Russian Roulette’ – is a powerful, apocalyptic summary of the global mess we’ve made with our unremitting greed and indifference.

With climate change constantly in the air, several other songs come with the smell of the countryside off them.  There is a reverence for the wonders of nature too, not least on a fine rendition of Gary Moore’s ‘Johnny Boy’.  In the same vein, the title-track (written by Tony Boylan and Wally Page), the Tuohy-Connaughton song ‘Gasun’ and Christy’s own take on ‘Myra’s Caboose’ all hit the mark.

Ricky Lynch’s ‘December 1942’ is a chilling tale of the Holocaust, and Christy’s cover of Dylan’s ‘I Pity the Poor Immigrant’ could hardly be more relevant, with its forlorn, trademark Moore vocal.  The Bard of Hibbing crops up again in ‘Zozimus and Zimmerman’, which applies a ‘Lisdoonvarna’-style to a vivid portrait of a Dylan gig in Dublin that makes you wish you were there.

Christy’s voice is sturdily expressive throughout.  And he still has that unerring instinct for a telling song.  A Christy Moore album is never less than provocative.  But this one is more than that.  We want this album.  But we surely need it even more.  Flying Into Mystery is a great record – and a genuine contender for Album of the Year.

March 13th Vicar Street Gig in Memory of Tim Martin & in Aid of the Irish Hospice Foundation

Dear Listeners,

Christy Moore,  Declan Sinnott,  Donal Lunny, and Jim Higgins will play Vicar Street on March 13th in Memory of Tim Martin & in aid of The Irish Hospice Foundation

Tickets on sale this Tuesday 18th December at 9am.

This gig will be a tribute to the late Tim Martin, our dear friend and colleague, with whom we worked closely over the past 30 years.  He was the outstanding Sound Engineer of our time.  Tim’s Family have requested that this gig be in aid of The Irish Hospice Foundation who will receive all the proceeds from this project.

Christy writes:
Tim Martin was the foremost Sound Engineer in Ireland. He is sadly and badly missed
particularly by his Family but also by all of those fortunate enough to have worked with him
across the years.  Apart from the skills and expertise apparent in his work, Tim was a good
friend.  His attention to detail, his focus, his preparedness to catch those magic spontaneous moments gave us all great confidence in the recording process. On top of all that Tim was mighty crack!!

Some of the acts recorded by Tim include

Planxty, Donal Lunny, Declan Sinnott, Matt Molloy, Whipping Boy, Commitments, Mary Coughlan, Seamus Heaney, Liam O’Flynn, Terence Trent Darby, Phil Lynnott, The Corrs, The Dubliners, Other Voices, Aslan, Something Happens, The Frames, Don Baker, Thin Lizzy, The Cranberries, Sweeneys Men, Horslips, L.S.O., Bryn Terfel, Moving Hearts, Mick Flannery, Secret Garden, Paula O’Flynn, Declan O’Rourke, The Waterboys, Sharon Shannon, Frankie Gavin, The Monks of Glenstal, Clannad, Paul Brady, Daniel O’Donnell.

This far-from-complete list came from Tim’s Family. When we first spoke to them about a gig they asked that the funds would go to The Irish Hospice Foundation.

The Foundation came on board as did Aiken Promotions.  We plan to have a good night in memory of our Dear Friend.

Tickets go on sale this Tuesday 18th December at 9am and will be available from:

Christy recently released a new single Sail On Jimmy, which was recorded at the Marquee when he performed there earlier this year.

‘I just love singing Albert Niland’s song.  More than any other, it has become an instant hit with audiences everywhere. We recorded this version at The Marquee in Cork on June 30th, 2018.  4,000 people, who had never heard the song before were singing beautifully by the end of the 3rd chorus….it was a joyful and memorable moment ….a stand out memory in 52 years of gigging.’      Christy …
