Thank you x 3
Lovely to hear The Voice Squad this Sunday Morning, they always stilled the nights we got to hear them…Phil Callery was always a joy to meet, big smile, warm greeting, laughter always close by , a pure gentleman of song… along with many musicians and singers I sang a few verses at Mount Jerome yesterday. I recounted back 50 years ago when most Irish Folk singers were traversing the island in second-hand Renault 4L cars all supplied by Phil…..he was our very own Minister for Transport…Rest in Peace Phil
Then to segue into my good Companero, Liam Óg Ó Flynn, to hear his beautiful playing is a great start to this damp and dirty morning… He coaxed music from the chanter like no other..grace notes abound, wee frills and thrills escape almost unnoticed, his drones and regulators always perfectly aligned….his sound, so distinctive and captivating, always brings on feelings of longing and lonliness…. but also gratitude and joy….
“Merrily we Kissed The Quaker,
lay down with the Alligator
as we sailed upon the Lakes of Pontchartrain
the music and the banter
the sound of Liam Óg’s chanter
We’ ll never hear the likes of him again”
Hello Christy,
I’m glad you like it, and the song too.
Sorry, couldn’t help it…
It was lovely to read John Liverpool’s words. Thanks John.
It made me think about how much I love folk songs, and why.
You commented the other day, Christy, about opera. Opera is a much less efficient medium than folk songs.
Operatic arias usually only manage to convey one emotion and they tend to be pretty static.
Folk songs are so much more subtle and they move sinuously through emotions, and events (I have no idea if that was spelt right… ).
I’m thinking of Musgrave and Tosca. They’re pretty much the same story but
Musgrave does in 10 minutes, with one person what it takes Tosca 2 hours, a massive set, 2 dozem chorus members and an orchestra of 60 to do.
Its all bells and whistles in all directions.
As a folk singer I get to convey all that stuff by myself, in a much more understated and (for me) human way.
So Thankyou to John for setting me off thinking about this. Your two examples are brilliant too. There’s at least one opera in each of them. Makes me think about Christy joking about climbing into his corset…
Rebecca

I’d settle for Fred Jordan, any day of the week… Ian Jock Manuel ..Micho Russell…Maggie Barry…
we laid Phil Callery to rest today…all his life he sang..most notably with “The Voice Squad” Phil would have enjoyed his own send off…Top Man
What a fantastic night we had at Killashee ..and many thanks for Barbara’s birthday mention. A perfect end to a perfect day. ✨
Just a note regarding ‘Joxer’ …. It always makes me smile …. I was at that match in Stuttgard supporting England !! Ah well ..you can’t win them all.
Hope to see you again soon.
R ‘n ‘ B.
Well done Rebecca, I suppose when you think about it a great song should be like the greatest contender of them all, it should float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. Thinking of They Never Came Home and Magdalene Laundries as perfect examples.
Hi Christy,
Hear you had the Lillywhites bopping last night….. even “Bogman” appeared. Keep him handy for Tullamore next week!!!! Nothing like a hometown gig.
You are quoted on our work newsletter today as Myles is featured :
“Once in a while a songwriting talent emerges to make music legends sit up and listen.
Described by singer Christy Moore as ‘a breath of fresh air for Irish folk music’, Songwriter and Postman Myles Gaffney is marking the release of his new album, Soldier On, and the popularity of his tribute song for boxing “champion Katie Taylor. http://www.mylesgaffneymusic.com/
Enjoy the long weekend….. Ride onn

Terry, Tony, Eamon, Gerry, Martin and Norman.
Eamon and Norman both no longer with us.
Martin has Parkinson’s and can’t play any more.
I’m still active and go to a session in Manchester run by our old friend Mike Harding. He sends his regards.
I’ll be seeing Gerry at the end of the month.
See you in Bundoran.
Christy's reply
Thanks Terry…Martin & Norman..now the picture is complete…(I was mixing up Tony & Arthur who also played the Mancunian circuit back then)..I knew that Eamon was gone ..sorry to hear about Norman….
its getting that way now…our ranks are thinning..but we gotta keep making a bit of noise while we can…
I was in my element back then…trying to get a foot in the door..Mike harding gave me my very first “proper” gig…Shortly after, Ye gave me a shot in the Crown & Anchor…it was a great club…. and most of the audience came to hear the Resident Band..ye had a great sound and those two front men were a right pair of rapscalions !!!
Brought our 10 year old to see you in Killashee last night. He loved every minute and I wanted to say thank you. He loved Honda 50 and wanted to know what nifty and shifty meant. Fortunately the weekend in Amsterdam went over his head! A proud newbridge man and bog man, he enjoyed hearing about the fen and Donnellys hollow (favourite cycling spot and place to fall into gorse!)
Christy's reply
Thanks for your feedback….glad to hear that your Son enjoyed the night…see you in Donnolly’s Hollow
Christy, your lovely rendition of The Curragh of Kildare last night reminded me of hearing The Tinkers singing it in an impressive concert hall in Harrogate, Yorkshire in the late 60s whilst I was on a visit to my friend Jack Ussher, who worked in ICI there. Have you ever played in Harrogate?
Christy's reply
Always a pleasure to see you Frankie….great that we’re both still “swingin the thurible”

A big thank you Christy for a mighty performance last night in Killashee. I’m still on a bit of a high. Loved the local references and the bit of banter. Keep doing what you’re doing. It’s still going down a bomb. Thanks again.
Hello Christy,
I hope you had a great night last night on the local turf with neighbours and friends in support.
I’ve been lying here for the last hour wondering whether to post my recording of The Contender. I always knew I would, so what’s all this dithering about.
Anyway, here it is https://youtu.be/ee3oubGDCrI
I sincerely hope you like it.
I’m still working on it, but that never ends, does it.
This is take eight. Take 7 was going really well till the postman knocked on the door just as I hit verse three.
I’m also trying to record it in a format the bandcamp likes. Got the thing down ok but I can’t find the bugger once it’s saved. How I got to be an IT trainer is a mystery…

Sounds good Rebecca…
thanks for sharing…
nice Kitchen..
I am amazed always about the way technology has made our lives so much easier.
But I was reminded earlier about how things used to be!!!
We were on our way to The Lake District and had an overnight stay in Blackpool.
What we always did when we got to a new town was to look up.the yellow pages to see what record shops were in town.
We did this and found a great shop and believe it or not found an immaculate copy of Prosperous.
We are still listening to that copy now .
