Just thinking my way back through your version of the Irish Free State. It’s such a beautifully balanced and poised version. The nursery rhyme quality of it is beautiful
Hello Christy,
Talking of Cork, that’s an area I haven’t visited yet. It’s a place I’d like to be. The nearest I’ve got is Kerry and Limerick. Had a few wondsrful days in the Dingle peninsula, winding up and down the Conor pass and hearing the spirit of Liam at the top.
There’s a great statue of Paul O’Connell and a couple of friends in Shannon Airport. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10165333583995136&id=847680135&sfnsn=scwspmo
Hope tonight is a blast.
I sang Musgrave yesterday after a couple of days without it. I’d lost some of it. Gotta keep at it with that one.

Its a fierce big county like…from Youghal to Allahies is a fair auld hike..especially if you get snared in Cork for a week..then you gotta try and get thru Clon, Skibb and Bantry without pullin in,.. ’tis easy lose a week in Leap,Ballydehob, Ahakista,Kealkill &/or Castletownbere…some craturs survived the delights of The Goats Path, The Sheeps Headon and Ballylickey only to be turned into Pillars of Salt upon the slopes of Hungry Hill….many linger on Beara who arrived for a week 50 years ago and never saw the inside of a hairdresser since….
Poets , Painters, Sculptors, Sound Engineers,Hare Krisnas, Talibanistas,Explorers, Explainers, Lords ‘n Ladies, Zhonchen Bearers and long order cooks all sending smoke signals from the South West Corner….
Had another watch of TG4’s Liam Og gem…fascinating in many ways…very interesting background about the music ‘politics’ between the traditional and folk revival scenes.Good interviews with you, Andy and Donal – a rare sighting of Leagues O’Toole too… such brilliant content and archive footage.
Hope the form is good. Sorry for the he long aul note here. Was at the gig on 24th November super stuff that night. You even brought a tear to my wife Lily’s eye with your tribute to Tomi and December 1942. Her grandparents just managed to escape from Hungary during the war so really touched a cord with her. Thank you.
I am heading to the gig tomorrow again. Looking forward to that even more. Wanted to bring the 10 year old Liam who is a super fan – but for obvious reasons can’t – doesn’t even look close to 15! He is gutted to say the least. I know it’s probably not the format, and apologies in advance, but it would make his day to get a signed copy of new album for Christmas (which I will gladly pay for). He loves a bit of Sail on Jimmy, Magic Nights, Deportees and Spancilhill (Which you sang on my request on the 24th!!)
No worries if you can’t..I am sure you get these requests all the time. Just keep her lit, keep the tunes and tributes going…and he’ll be happy enough!
I missed out on rebooking tickets last week but just picked up 2 on ticketmaster for tomorrow Tuesday, I see there’s still 2 more there now if anybody still hunting
Hi Christy, hope all well , really looking forward to tomorrow nights gig. The great Jack Doyle died on this day 1978, if you get a chance to sing The Contender tomorrow, it would be a great tribute .Regards Mark.
Uncut magazine is always a worthy read…February, 2022 edition no exception. The review section has a great paragraph by Nigel Williamson on ‘Flying into Mystery’. ‘…masterful and moving’ is his excellent summary !
Now on to a double page spread about Dylan’s latest NET gigs – good that you’re following the same path!

Some performers say they dont read or care about reviews…..not so here..I love a good review (even when I dont believe it..I like bad reviews too, provided there is something to be learned )
I doubt if anyone can follow that man’s path….he travels through the most dense terrain
Hello Christy,
That was some match with Munster and Wasps yesterday. 59 men unavailable, 34 munster, 25 wasps. It was loads of scampering teenagers with a few internationals sprinkled through.. Some of them still had their puppy fat. So much joy and exuberance on that pitch.

a great spectacle..they threw that ball around the field like snuff at a wake.. Peter O’Mahoney comes to my Cork gigs..great to see him leading the pack …
Thanks for the tip off, H… a beautiful programme – uplifting in many ways. And, you’re right, Christy…’soars’ sums up Liam and his wonderful playing.
I’m grateful to have seen him play a few Planxty gigs – it’s great you treasure your memories, going back across the decades. Special times…I’ll be watching this gem of a doc a lot.
Brilliant NCH music on Saturday… terrific for you to be part of such an event.
I’ve recently seen some great online Free State events. The Royal Irish Academy has a terrific website – and for a wide range of info (showing the scale of epic times in the early C20th) http://www.decadeofcentenaries.com
Have a great day – part of mine will be tracking the superb TG4 for Liam Og O’Flynn’s story.
Liam O’Flynn-píobaire TG4…loving it.
Hilary thank you for link to Treaty: songs, forgot to record. Maith thú a Christy, felt emotional listening this morning to you and and all who sang/performed. Love Duke Special (missing the dreadlocks) check out Ulaid & Duke Special – performing Lon Dubh Loch Lao – the blackbird of Belfast Lough – a note let go. Irish to the core, but sadly this particular green field is fenced in. Willy Largy was our butcher!
Christy's reply
I’ve always liked Duke Special’s work..it was lovely to meet him in the NCH…
Hi All. On TG4.ie tonight at 9.30 a programme about Liam Og. This feature documentary tells the story of master piper, Liam O’Flynn, from his membership with iconic Irish supergroup, Planxty, through to his ground-breaking orchestral work in The Brendan Voyage. It’s probably a repeat, not sure if its available globally but should be available on the player afterwards. Beir beir agus beannacht. H
Hello Christy,
Thank you for singing The Irish free state last night. The tune is in my head from years ago, I don’t know where I know it from. The words were new to me.
It was so lovely to hear the lady at the beginning talking about the same things I was thinking about yesterday, the thing about becoming the person in the song when we sing it. Such a deep vein of tradition you have. It looks like I learn quickly. I didn’t know.
Hi All. Such an exciting and eclectic ensemble last night at NCH. You introduced us to a great song Christy to open the show, this is the link I hope https://youtu.be/YwGXdOtgeWY It has been viewed by many already.I know there was a global gaggle tuned in..it was great to be there in person ! ..Beir bua agus beannacht. Thank H…great to be able to see it again..some lovely songs
Dear Christy,
I wondered if there was any recording of last night’s Irish Free State?
It would be great to hear .
In my car i often have whirring the SF shop’s James Connolly cd , a fine compilation which includes your version of Where is Our James Connolly ( as well as the ballad of jim larkin).
The Specials released, in October, a fine ‘protest songs’ album but it’s the songs of protest from Ireland’s whole island that stir the most. Indeed too many to mention.
Great to hear that Dave brought out the green disc, whilst the Yellow and Lilac discs have such a fine array of protests.
They culminate in perhaps the finest punk song ever written…No time for love.
Keep on keeping on Christy.
Rory
