The latest has the TG4 Christmas programme schedule, featuring several mouth watering trad music offerings. Starting Sunday 19/ 12 – a feature length show with Louise Mulcahy considering female uilleann pipers, several of whom are little known…not bad for starters!
Have a good day

Louise is blazing a trail……great footage of her playing Liam’s B Flat Pipes at The Piper’s Stone..a hill top in County Kildare where she was joined by Fiddle player Liam O’Connor ….
Can’t believe it’s called off,omg.. but I do understand…any ways it’s nice to chill

we hope to play all gigs at an earlier starting time…as I write, the different agencies involved are seeking to pull the logistics together..I will have no further info until everything is agreed and in place…only then will further details be announced…
That’s a shame about Vicar St on all fronts!……yes I’d say you’re glad to be back gigging again, even with the restrictions. A half a loaf or half a crowd is better than nothing. Were you nervous in front of the audience again after so long? I played a session on Tory island in July and I was a bag of nerves!….ya get rusty after a while, but i settled down and it was just magical. we sang and played from 2pm till 2am!…..It was the best birthday gift I ever received.

I get very nervous without the healing balm of a lively audience…
Hi again Christy,
I do a Christmas countdown of seasonal songs for my 4 kids every year, today was number 8 and i slipped in Tom Barry’s ‘Our Moment’.
Sadly it is again prescient. Lovely song, though am sure Tom thought that last year might have been the only time in applied…….
regards Rory
Hi Christy,
Tonight i am having a good session with Belfast’s Joshua Burnside as one of his CDs dropped through the letterbox today, and discovered one of his songs performed in a fascinating way on you tube
the song NOTHING FOR YA and part of the Whisper Project.
Just him and his banjo, but what makes it intriguing and special is how he is wandering through a series of empty rooms and corridors whilst singing and playing.
The mix and hollow resonance produces a fab sound, worth a check out.
The banjo i suppose is synonymous with folk like Dolly Parton and Pete Seeger , and something you have played a bit of i think?
Anyway that was it, a joyous sound.
Regards Rory

I’ve recorded with three Banjo players…Cathal Hayden, Seamie O’Dowd and the late Barney McKenna, …I recorded a TV slot over 40 years ago with Stockton’s Wing when Kieran Hanrahan was in the Band….many years ago I played a session with a brilliant Banjo player called “Shaggis”in the old Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh.back in the 60s he played on the Scottish Folk Scene..he moved to London where he reverted to Davey Johnstone and concentrated on Electric Guitar..he achieved great distinction playing with Elton John and Rod Stewart..but its his Banjo playing that I recall…
Got very into Cathal Hayden’s playing when we played in both “The Trad Outfit” and “The Companeros”..he released a fine Banjo albun a few years back…
I just wanted to write and say how much i enjoyed the gig last night. I love the song Johnny Boy, it has a special resonance for me a bit like John O Dreams does. Thank you for a great night and a happy Christmas to you and all the family. I hope to see you along the way in 2022.

Hello Christy, I am compelled to contact you but am not sure what way to do so. Then this forum came to my attention, so here goes, I’ve nothing to lose. I have a song that I feel has an important story to tell but it needs music. I would love to talk to you about it sometime. Best wishes for a Happy and safe Christmas, Niamh Duffy (instagram @niamhduffymusic)
Thanks Christy for replying to my query about the Encore song I knew about the Pecker Dunne verse and had put in as the 3rd verse in my version with the guards verse before it you don’t seem keen on that verse now so I cut it out and have the Pecker verse 2nd I changed the last line of the 3rd verse to “and after 55 years I’m doing well” to bring it up to date which chorus should I use which one do you like best or could I use both the original and the newer ones in some way thanks vincent
Christy's reply
best thing for you to do is shape the song to suit yourself….I was inspired to write it 40 years ago when I heard Waylon Jennings sing a Willy Nelson song which, I think, was called Me & Paul, but I’m no 100% sure of that… go for it Vincent, tailor it to suit yourself…
Enjoy the rest day, Christy…I could just do a walk and grub in ‘The Snailbox’!
I agree with you about the waffle in PAOTY.Fascinating show. Now and again,I’ve looked at some competitor’s websites for more time with their works..must watch the ‘Landscape’ too…
it’s been a good year for art – special mention for www,davidrooney.com what style he has…
‘Twas indeed ..lovely tribute to Bobby Sands.. Van Diemens Land and Back Home in Derry.. I’m sure his comrade was in high spirits..
Catch you along the way..

That Atkin sounds like a woman. Not a bad thing to spend so much time with. I have two harps. The one I play everyday is female, the other feels male. I’ve e no idea why.
I’m just glad to find an instrument I can sing to that I can actually play.
Christy's reply
The Atkin is forever transitioning….certain songs bring a flux of constant changeover…Little Musgrave causes perplexed consternation, Lord Baker leaves the wood & wire befuddled…I’m forever settling it with swathes of defined gender ballads
Hello Christy,
Sounds like Mcilhatton turned up last bight. Love his mischief.
I looked in my work diary yesterday and there’s no work to do today. A full, clear day for singing and playing. This doesn’t happen very often.
I was pfizered yesterday at a methodist church in Halifax. I’d forgotten what they’re like. They have a hall attached with a proper raised stage at one end, proscenium arch, red velvet curtains, wings, everyrhing.
Hoping so much for the gigs in January and a clear path from here to there.
Rebecca

Hello Christy,
I hope all is as well as can be expected with you in these dark days.
I was trying to buy tickets for january shows on ticketmaster but the page is saying none available? are the new seating arrangements made yet? is that the problem?
I dearly hope to get to the gig, it would be a welcome respite from all this chaos! I listen to your music most days, it keeps my fire lit! Congrats on your recent achievement award, well deserved. You should also at least be nominated for a peace prize for services to decent music and opposing shite talk!
All the best.

Vicar St gigs are limited to 50% capacity and sold out….despite current limitations its great to be doing a bit of work again…
I hope it was a great 2021 gig finale and you enjoyed the late night jam with the Fab Four… I’m hoping to catch up with the film over Christmas. I remember the era fondly and enjoy The Beatles’ diversity – not least, the skills and contributions of George Martin – plus the mojo of Abbey Road studios…
A programme worth a catch up is the final of SKY Portrait artist of the year…No spoilers about the winner of the competition, but the prize was to depict the classical violinist, Nicola Benedetti – the portrait to go in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh. NB is a most engaging subject and seems like a real diamond. It’s an uplifting watch.
Have a good day

I watched that P.A.O.T.Y. final last night….a beautiful portrait emerged…I’ve enjoyed that series since the get-go….I still recall the young Irish Painter who packed up his brushes half way thru..it was a few series back… I sometimes wish the cameras to linger longer on the paint going onto the canvas….for me,there is too much waffle and palavar from presenters and judges….Gonna watch the Landscape final later…gonna rest the Atkin and voice box for a day or two..not always easy to do….
The ol’ whisp of smoke south o’the glen .. glad to chip in ..hope you didn’t mind the shout..put me down for an assist..

That perfect prompt saved the day….was it yours ?….every now and then a blank page appears in the song book….I was forging ahead thru Glenravel’s Glen last night when my mind momentarily faltered…that prompt last night was like a leg back up on my bike …..and away we went, to go at it agin
Thank you so much, I could have listened another few hours…
And what can I say: another song dedicated to me and being mentioned again, thank you so much!!!
The gig felt so good after two years living an unnormal life with the big C – a bit like stepping back to reality. Let’s
hope we don’t have to wait too long for the next gigs.
I wish you and all your family a peaceful and enjoyable Christmas! Stay safe and thanks again!

Whenever possible I like to welcome long haul listeners….it takes a lot of effort to travel from Essen to Dublin
I played there way back in the 1980s….part of a 30 gig German Tour….good times….
Safe journey home….
