Interesting post from John…interview today on RTE radio, perhaps? I’m very interested in his Spancilhill research and would be grateful of any links please.
Always great to riff on Carthy, Swarbrick et al… I’ve just spent ages on youtube (great antidote to a wild, wet Sunday pm) and found a gem…1991 full Carthy/ Swarbrick gig ‘100 not out’, celebrating their 50th birthdays… they open with ‘Arthur Mc Bride’, which is astounding…great that you saw them at MSG and they made such an impact. Dave RIP and Martin – superb acoustic music + having the guts to ‘go electric’ with Fairport and Steeleye, respectively…thanks to them for so many years of wonderful, diverse listening…I’m getting a brew on and back to ‘100 not out’…
Was just listening to the interview today and thought about research I did in San Francisco about the song Spancil Hill and then Miriam played it.
What a great story of love, emigration and loss.
Hi Christy, re previous post, Fidelus Foley (Martin egan and your friend) said to pop in when you’re passing to have a cuppa – ‘work the bottom Shelf’. Paul and Clíodhna
Hello Christy,
I think folk music is thriving. At the gig in Ennis we were surrounded by people in their 20s and 30s, unless they were all doing a Dorian Grey. It was a wonderful thing to see it being passed on and loved.
Thank you to people here, John Liverpool for the donal and Andy gig news. I’ve got my tickets for Bury, and also to Dave for Martin Cathy, I’ve no idea how I’ve missed him before. https://youtu.be/I77MooeGMxI
I hope you don’t mind me saying so, but I’m very much in the chugging camp and I’ve had to work hard to get to be a chugger. It’s all about the voice for me, an instrument more complicated than the pipes. And it can do words.
Rebecca
Christy's reply
I agree with most of what you say….. but I’m not so sure about the comparative complexity of voicebox and Uilleann Pipes….we are born with an innate ability to sound the voice box…..the actual make-up and physical workings of both instruments may be complicated, ….but it takes many many years to get sweet music from those Uilleann reeds…our own sweet cooing begins at birth
Christ hi,
I know you cant be here in person but i feel you will stand with me in spirit.
This tuesday marks the 175th anniversary of this speech by this remarkable man. Please think about visiting the location at the foot of bright street where it meets Myreslawgreen Hawick sometime that day, and pause to reflect on the greatness that our forefathers witnessed that day.
Wonderful, wonderful gig last night in Limerick! And last weekend in Ennis!! When we heard these two were going to happen we purchased our plane tickets from the US before the next morning! So happy to be there for both – amazing and memorable for so many reasons. In between we had a little Kerry time with Hilary. This will go down as our best vacation ever!
Many, many thanks!
Christy's reply
No better Woman to guide you from Ennis to her Kingdom, then to lead you safely back to Limerick….glad to read of your Munster sojourn..thank you for such positive feedback……
I too enjoyed both those gigs….You Listeners were simply wonderful
Very positive vibes after last night’s Limerick gig….what an amazing experience you give to all who can get to the gigs…. young and not so young alike.
We had some younger friends there too…. Eoin, who has just started at UL…. His brother Declan who drove from the Gweebarra bay between Glenties and Leitirmacaward and their sister Orlaith who came from Dublin to join them as well. They said it was a mighty evening . They also had the privilege of meeting with Hilary too……
Thanks to all who make this possible.
Christy's reply
You remind me of Glorious Gweebarra, of nights in Lettermacaward, of a gig in the Poisened Glen……….we sang about Uranium, about the hungry hoors who were seeking to extract it….we made a mighty racket
Hi Christy, we had a brilliant time at UCH last night. We had tickets for the 2019 cancelled gig and so my son Eoghan (age 7) was absolutely delighted when we got front row tickets for last night. He was even happier when you started with City of Chicago and included his absolute favourite- Lisdoonvarna. My nephew Tadhg (age 10) and niece Sadhbh (age 7) really enjoyed it too. We happened to meet Hilary afterwards and she was so kind to the children. We are already looking forward to your next visit to Limerick. Thanks so much, Mary
Christy's reply
Hey Mary.. glad it went well for you …Sorry I did not spot Eoghan, Tadhg and Sadhbh, I’d have sung a wee song for them…with the lighting I can only see a bare outline of the audience….thanks for your feedback
When I rang UCH to book my tickets the woman on the other end of the phone recognized the young voice and asked was I purchasing the tickets for my father; she assumed no youngone would be going to Christy Moore. Well, she was wrong.
I may only be 25 years young but I know good music when I hear it; been a Christy Moore fan for as long as I can remember and already looking forward to the next gig!
See you again soon Christy ❤️

Well Megan…
Thank you too…
Sounds like an inappropriate response from your UCL responder….it certainly lacks the spirit of Chuck Feeney…
a position in security or with the cleaning section might be more appropriate….I intend to write to the Minister..
this simply can not be allowed to continue…
it would’nt happen in Puckane
Hello Christy,
Sounds like it was a fine gig last night.
So happy the wagons are rolling again.
Yesterday I spent a few hours in a fish and chip cafe in Brighouse with my mum and, dad and brother Matthew. Its the first time we’ve been together, just the four of us, since I ran away yo university. It was good.
How was the film? Dated?
Rebecca
Christy's reply
it was quirky, quaint, charming and entertaining, the singing was treated seriously , Scotland looked beautiful,……Thank You, I enjoyed it
Thank you so much for giving us all a wonderful night yesterday in that beautiful venue in Limerick. We enjoyed the gig tremendously. We were all very honoured that you paid special attention to us and sang Bright Blue Rose for us. Thank you.
We were so glad to see everyone back, you, the fantastic crew, Hilary and other 4711-erg. As you rightfully said : “we are not yet out of the woods”, but at least we can gather again around your beautiful music, even if we have to wear a mask.
Before we go back to Belgium we will enjoy some days off in Kerry, Casey will be on the playlist for sure.
Thanks again for all the good work and looking forward to the new album.
Your Belgian crew

Last night was very special….such a wonderful audience in that great venue….you overcame the challenge of masks, vacc passports and various checkpoints …you created an atmosphere that inspired me to sing out and give it sox….I’m still buzzing…..
ps Martin Carthy’s final song on the ‘Homegrown’ film is ‘Sir Patrick Spens’…absolutely stunning…the last time I saw him was at Wickham Festival a few years ago…in a marquee with a brilliant PA – he played this and the bass notes came through the floor, but it’s just as mighty here… D
Christy's reply
We got to see him and John Kirkpatrick in Greystones,County Wicklow 2 years back….its over 50 years since I first heard him in the MSG with Dave Swarbrick…I hold him in the white light
Last night I found a most heartwarming youtube film… Martin Carthy, recently filmed in Whitby, for the US Library of Congress ‘ Homegrown Series’. Martin looks frail, but the chat and music shine bright…it’s a fabulous piece, with some split screen close ups of his guitar playing… wonderful to see – one day I might work out just how he does it!
Earlier, I’d watched the tv doc ‘The Shadows at 60’ – superb insights and I found myself grinning at numerous recollections…
Music keeping spirits high – rain and shine.
Keep well
Dave
Christy's reply
Thanks Dave….I’ll be seeking those films later…
Some of us bash guitars and hope our limited chords might somehow correspond to the melodies we sing…
But there are certain guitarists who take accompaniments a lot further…Nic Jones, Martin Carthy,Denis Cahill and Steve Cooney all come to mind…
I listen to Nic sometimes and wonder how he did it….

Dear Christy,
Thank you for thinking of our once more battered town.
What better start to the day to know that the flooding is subsiding, buckets to the rescue, community spirit abounding and over my airwaves plays the calming and appropriate album The River Holds Its Breath by Colm Mac Con Iomaire.
Off out now to re start the generator at the rugby club to keep the pumping out going, there may be trout on the 25 yard line, herons wading along the try line and a dolphin cavorting around the 10 yard line but at least there is Peace In the Valley…..once again.
Regards
Rory

Wishing you all well Rory…..may the music keep your spirits high
Hi Christy/all,
heads up for any Planxty listeners/fans living in and around the Manchester and Liverpool areas, there is a rear chance to hear Andy & Donnel playing together again next month. They are playing with their new band Usher’s Island at Bury Met (26 November) & Liverpool Phil’ (27 November). The band also includes Paddy Glackin (ex Bothy Band), Michael MCGoldrick (ex Lunas) and John Doyle, should be a real treat for anyone who can get along.
Hello Christy,
One of the things I love watching and listening to with planxty is, whatever shenanigans are going on around you plus liam’s glorious stuff, you always seem so utterly bombproof and deliver so beautifully and consistently. I’ve no idea what it felt like, but it’s a huge inspiration to me to watch and listen to you, I may have mentioned it once or twice before,…
Well put, Christy… but your understating your Planxty roles… all very much ‘cherished’ here too… as a listener/fan and inspiration for my playing – thanks D
