Hi Christy, your mention of Phil Ochs took me right back to Dec 1973, my wedding day – low key, home-made frock and cake, once family had left our flat we spent the evening with friends playing and listening to mainly Phil Ochs songs. It’s odd that you can almost forget an artist, will remedy that now. Who would have thought my last post re-american election would, thanks to your mention, bring back a bunch of memories. Pam
Could I request a happy 40th birthday message for Ryan McGunnigal, we are always at your tours and gutted to miss this years due to the pandemic..

More examples of Bob’s multitudes of talents. Latest art/ lyrics released via http://www.castlefineart.com Very expensive for sure, but even online, it’s possible to appreciate Dylan’s art skills. I think they work well with the songs they illustrate. What a ‘clever clogs’ he is…
‘Duende’ is a fascinating topic… often linked to the passion of flamenco,I think. Energised frenzy of high tempo dance, sounds of feet, castanets, guitar in perfect sync, then a crisp finish, silence, applause… but,I think it also works on quiet music, when a certain ‘something ‘ emerges… one of your songs that hits me like that every time (right from the first time) is ‘Green Grows the Laurel’. Perfect in its intensity and balance of singing/music,with the most poignant story. From a playing viewpoint, ‘Lakes of Pontchartrain’ and ‘She moves through the fair’ can take me ‘somewhere’,but, there are few similar… can never rule out ‘Beeswing’ for sure. The mojo is always needed and most powerful when it hits from nowhere… Like you, I’m really missing the gigs!

Hi Christy
I messaged you last November about St Patrick’s Soup Kitchen In Belfast, which supports the Homeless and those badly hit by poverty, and you very generously offered to visit the next time you were in the city. Seems like a lifetime ago!
Well the Kitchen has to move, and re-name partly due to the increased number of people we need to help due to the ongoing wffects of thie pandemic. We are now known as the People’s Kitchen, Belfast, and are based on the Springfield Road, in the west of the city. We have continued to support those most in need and on the streets, even during Locksown, You can check out some of our work on our Facebook page, at People’s Kitchen Belfast. As deputy chairperson of The Kitchen, I am hugely proud of the selflessness, kindness and dedication of all our volunteers. This is hopefully where your good self comes in! I wonder if you could email at mcnairney.damian@gmail.com or call me on 07516 629300 about a possible alternative to your visit?
Thanks Christy, your support is hugely appreciated!
Dear Christy,
At our boxing club, socially distanced shadow version, tonight a new lad came in. He is working on our town’s flood defence and comes from County Offaly.
This reminds me of the Tullamore gig i attended about 18 months ago .
In the few minutes before that great gig one of the 2 pals with me (DP) offered me a drink. I accepted just one as i was the designated driver, so i requested a Tullamore Dew, as i nipped off to the bogs. I came back and grabbed the glass, slugged it back and we went to join the queue as my pal’s coloured drained.
Later on my other pal, Cammy, explained that DP had spent 16€ on that glass of 18yo Dew, and expected me to sip and savour but i hadn’t realised it’s value and chucked it down.
Anyway, it was a fab night, a great gig and another memorable trip. Hilary will recall the set list, she kept us some fab seats, we sang ( out of tune) along, and enjoyed every single tune to the max.
The memory of that night in Offaly ( after a day racing down in Thurles) brought a rare smile after today’s trump threat and lockdown saga. Thanks for the memory, bring it back soon.
Regards
Rory

“Give every Man his Dew” ran an old advertisement back in the day….it would not pass muster in 2020….its a lovely town…thats where Donal Lunny drew his first breath….one of the very few Towns in Ireland that had a proper “Folk Club”…I was never a fan of the top shelf ..I’d always prefer 3 or 4 shots of hard tack to the stuff in fancy bottles…..
” a day racing in Thurles” conjures up distant memories…. Baldoyle, Phoenix Park,(both gone), Powerstown Park, Navan,Gowran Park, Goodwood, and ,of course, The Curragh, Punchestown and Naas…..the last three a short bicycle ride from home….not been at the races for 40 years now…from boyhood I recall seeing prince Monalulu, The Aga Khan with 8 wives around him, great Irish Jockeys, Liam Ward, Jimmy Eddery, Gerry Cooney, landing an on course double with Martin Harney after which we retired to The Hotel Minella where we ordered two steaks and drank brandy…knew all the local trainers, PJ (darky)Prendergast, Charlie Weld, Mickey Rogers, Brud Featherston, Con Collins,Kevin Prendergast, Kevin Bell ..all that was a world of wonder..we listened to the big races on the wireless in those pre TV days..my Granny Power was a daily communicant in the betting shop (Dick Symes in Lucan)..I used to cycle the 4 miles to get her bets on…(she had the silks from Workman’s Aintree )…….(“Standing Sixteen One or Two with eyes Wild and Green”)
Hello Christy,
I don’t know whether it’s the right word, or if I understand the word, but the communication seems to be working.
You answered a question for me yesterday. The Time Has Come has loomed large since I first heard it, and later, in a lockdown session, you and Andy slipped so smoothly through it. I had no idea how, till you talked about duende yesterday. It’s deep connection through honest openness, I think. I thought about it most of the day yesterday. Clearly work is not getting full value from me right now.
I can understand how Everybody Knew and Well Below The Valley could so easily bond. This morning The Time Has Come and The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face did something similar in my head.
I’ve been listening to your songs shuffled, so they come out in a random order. The thing has 449 of them to go at.
I heard Black is the Colour, with Declan picking up on a subtle Spanish rhythm. It helped me with the work I’m doing on Yellow Furze Woman. The same rhythm has been turning up on the harp and I’d been feeling confused about it.

Yes, sad news about Nobby and evoking memories of a late 60s golden era for Reds and Blues… There’s a great, true story from those times, about Nobby in Madrid pre a huge match with Real. Several players went to Mass ,with Nobby leaving £10 in the collection…his mates were aghast and reckoned he could be accused of bribery to get the win!
Hello Christy,
You scored a try in the Leinster Schools Junior Cup? That’s some achievement for a number 3. I love it when those big lads get the ball and then see space ahead.
Please balance away. A deft brush on a clear mind can be dangerously vivid. It feels strange to apologise for the state of my imagination, but I do.
I played in the pit orchestra for a couple of productions of the Mikado. Tit Willow is written large, along with one or two others. We didn’t have much of a pit, so I got a great view every night.
I think Pat makes a great point that many memorable and useful parts of school happen alongside the classroom. It seemed that way for me, anyway. Your joyous memories could sound along those lines too.
Duende. Was that the bug that bit? Time, space and patience, but I’m back to rambling on about states of mind.
Just watching my cat boinging round the garden before she comes in to demand breakfast.
