Offaly the Faithful County, the motto on the county council’s current coat of arms is Esto Fidelis “Be You Faithful” Thanks to Mr.Wikipedia I would not have known.
Putting some photographs together for Drimoleague Singing Festival (Sept22 -24th) a friend of a friend asked, their first Festival, have you ever played in that part of Cork ?
Christy's reply
Schull, Ballydehob, Skibbereen,Durrus, Kilcrohane, Sherkin, Cape,Clonakilty,Bantry,Dunmanway, Kealkil that I can remember and prob a few from earlier days that I cant…never played Drimoleague itself tho…
have you heard Paul Durcan’s “Drimoleague Blues”?….
Hi to all the Clogh Coffey/Joyce/Lunny Clan
Why are our neighbours Offaly called the ” Faithful ” County:
In 1953, Andy Croke wrote, ‘If ever Offaly earns a name like “Rebel” Cork or “Premier” Tipperary, I believe it will be the “Faithful” County, for nowhere else are hurlers and football more intent on sticking to their colours, which incidentally are green, white and gold.’ Also attributed to Bob O’Keeffe, GAA president from 1935–38, possibly because the county is strong in both hurling and gaelic football. The motto on the county council’s current coat of arms is Esto Fidelis “Be You Faithful”……………Straight from Wikipedia.

I’ll take Bob O’Keeffe over Pickaweedia any night of the week
Hi ya Christy , hope all is well…
Your trip down to the Wicklow hills is nearly here,
Here hopes the weather stays good,
wanted to put in a request for the gigs, not sure if it gets played at gigs i dont think ive heard it live but i could be mistaken, Among the Wicklow hills,
Safe travels see you Thursday.
Adam
Christy's reply
Hey its The Wicklow Boy..
sorry Adam, that song was played live only a few times 30 years ago, like many others it did not survive the rigours of the road..looking forward to visiting your home town….
we love to wander among the Wicklow Hills
Best of luck to the Lilywhites in the play-offs…I understand if you win you will automatically play the Tyrone Boys! You and Cathal could perform Amhrán na bhFiann! Casement Park stadium flythrough looks great…fingers crossed it will get through. It’s a sad sight to see our County ground lying derelict some five years now…hopefully there will be peace in the valley once again… as ‘…more than wild doves are building their nests…’
Christy's reply
count me in on that one….
I’d love to play in Casement Park one more time..
memory of the last performance there still lingers..
“wild flowers grow upon the mannequins

The day after. I left Croke Park yesterday with a odd feeling “that Dublin team is one of the best football teams that I ever saw” and ” That Kildare team are one of the best Kildare teams for a long time”. Still there, with Armagh in two weeks. The Cats are shouting for the Flourbags here as they always do. Any news from Cork, the hurlers are looking good for Sept`.
Christy's reply
no doubt, its a great topic for discussion….Pat Spillane believes his team is the best ever but does not enlighten us as to which one.Over his career there may have been 50 different line-ups for Kerry…
Much of our social discourse depends entirely upon the soothing hot air created by our never ending hurling from the ditch…I contribute to many of these discussions myself, my opinions based almost entirely upon nuggets extracted from previous (and most enjoyable) sporting conversations, from listeneing to Joe Brolly, Colm O’Rourke, Pat Spillane ,The Gooch, Pat Spillane and whoever else is wheeled out by Michael Lister, ( and their Hurling counterparts)
I think back to endless hours spent in Neesons ( and Coffeys) extolling the skills of our old heroes Jimmy Cummins, The “Ba” Dowling, Paddy Moore, Ray Swan, Miko Doyle…
I think back to cycling to Croke Park or travelling in style in Beggs McCormack’s trusty Bedford Van (guaranteed no Wi-Fi)….the crack on the “special trains”, getting to Maryborough, seeing “The Boiler” come on like Superman, Dinny Craddock saving a penalty in Naas against Kerry in a Challenge Match…seeing Doggy and Fido gaining Lily White jerseys….
The GAA still has it over the other codes who seem prepared to sell their souls to mammon…look at any line up before any GAA game, every player from a club or townland within their county, all carrying the pride, hope and aspirations of their very neighbours….
(not many Cockneys playing at Stamford Bridge nor Scousers at Anfield)
I’m in rambling mode this morning John….looking forward to meeting the Boys from the County Armagh…yes, The Hurling is mighty this year..great to have Cork back in the mix….
question, why are Offaly called “the Faithfull County”
Hi Christy! We’re from Tyrone and Armagh and were home at Christmas to see you in Vicar street. We were in Killarney last year for folkfest too. Christmas was honestly the best concert we’ve ever been at and you sang beeswing for me and gave us a shout out. It was class! And we should have messaged to thank you before this but wanted to let you know how much we appreciated it. We’re just sitting at the computer here listening to the cliffs of Dooneen with a few bottles of corona on a Monday so thought we’d say hello and thanks. Keep her lit! Sarah and Mickey xx
Christy's reply
Better late then never! Greetings to WA ….just got word that Kildare are to meet Armagh in the play-offs….Tyrone were powerful in the Ulster Final yesterday as the Down challenge fizzled out…

Dead on with the location at the Back of the Barracks, around the corner from Lunny’s, Christy but only since 1962. Liffey View, The Barracks from Chapel Lane in 1944 ’till then. Always kept close to the river. Have a search under John Armstrong on Newbridge Down Memory Lane for photos. Up the Lilies !
Christy's reply
Fair play to the Boland Clan..3 moves since 1944 and never more then a stones throw from the Liffey..had a walk down Chapel Lane last Summer and was amazed at all the houses opposite the “Strand”..I suppose Chapel Lane led to the old bridge before the NEW BRIDGE was built….I’ve been living here now for almost 3 times longer then I lived in Moorefield but no matter what….its where I come from..and all its parts from Hawkfield to Kilbelin, Chinatown to Rosie’s Lane, from The Barracks, Páirc Mhuire, Rathfield,Moore Park, Artillery Place, The Crescent, Ballymany, Morristown Biller,Roseberry, TankardsGarden, Walshestown,Athgarvan, Pollardstown,Miltown, Barronstown, Feighcullen, Corbally Harbour, Baroda, Bundle o’Sticks,Old Connell, I still recall all the lanes ,fields, houses and all the good people of that place that lives on in my memory..
just making the sangwidges now for Croker..heading in there shortly with 2 Dubs ,
heres hoping we give them a good game..the Might of Wealthy Dublin, The Boys in Blue, may the Godesses raise the Lilies today, that we may live to fight another Day
Hello Christie, we are in Ireland for just 4 nights and were so lucky to see that you were performing in Cork in that time so organised our trip around your concert. I could not believe it when I heard you mention Geelong in your lyrics. In 1995, when our children were young, we did a 6 month trip around Australia and you accompanied us all the way, singing on our car tape deck. Our children knew all the lyrics and learnt a lot of Irish and world history from your songs. Thank you.

One of my most prized possessions is your Come All You Dreamers DVD. But as the world is becoming smaller with travel and I spend most my time in one hotel room or another, I was wondering if you would ever consider releasing this through iTunes or other services as a downloadable purchasable video?
Thanks in advance if you read this and hope to see you again in auld Alba

I have to stand up and be counted even though I now live in a Sarsfield stronghold. My grandmother was a Murphy, originally from Moorefield Rd. opp. St. Patricks and my mother was a Curran from Chapel Lane and Tommie Behan was her godfather. Need I say more.
Christy's reply
Frankie me auld china…I did’nt have you in The Barracks..I always had you as a back-of-The-Barracks-man ..I hope the omission did not cause you any grief…and you a cousin of Mick Curran, as fine a man as a fellow could hope to meet….were’nt ye up past Doctor Dan on the East side of the British Wall ?…are you travellin tomorrow to see the Lilies puttin it up to The Jackeens ? The Dubs are doin fierce crowing and boasting in advance of tomorrow’s game….Hopefully we’ll give them a good run for their (loadsa) money ….

Hi Christy,
Just arrived home from our two weeks in Ireland. We loved your concert! Had front row seats 🙂 Thanks for the special welcome. My husband went straight out and bought your CDs the next morning so we could enjoy on our road trip to Cork. (Btw, next time you’re in Cork, there’s a great little veg restaurant called Cafe Paradiso). Best wishes.. Hope to return one day. Leonie
PS Our Paul Kelly over here would blend so well with you.. Worth a listen if you haven’t done so already.
Christy's reply
the Cafe Paradiso is part of the Folklore of this Hilly Riverside City…back in the day it was a favourite haunt for late night capers and frolics…. heard and appreciated Paul Kelly over the years….glad you had a good trip back to New South Wales
Was in the old Town yesterday and got the shock of my life, more “progress”, they are building houses on the Barracks Green, that was ours we won All Irelands, gold and silver in the 100 and 200 Olympics, a Derby on Dolly Brennan. Over 20 million acres in Ireland and they build there, whats next our Curragh, but that may already started, the racey crowd have been edging out and out……. Another big day on Sunday, top of the Cusack which is a bad start, we played the Dubs 12 times in finals we won 4, the lads will have to play as they never did before to make it 5 ….. Good luck in Cork.
Christy's reply
