Greetings Christy,
Not for the first time you have created a wonderful experience and magic memory for a young man (Conor). He was in attendance in Portlaoise last Friday with his Grandmother Mary and despite having spoiled the lad last year you still found time to chat with him again and gift him your plectrum!!!! You are responsible for so much happiness in Conor’s life, so sincere thanks once again for your patience and kindness.
Keadeen will be jammers this week, theres talk of Ber Murphy and Bud Kelly making the trip together with a bunch from Buckleys Cross!! Rock on and thanks again
So, just a handful of gigs left in 2015, we are looking forward to seeing you in your hometown this week. Never been to Newbridge but can’t think of a better reason to visit. Nice to have the two nights too. As that young lad shouted out at the Letterkenny gig , sing what ever songs you like yourself !! On the home straight now.
Christy, how we love you, your voice, your presence, your music, your songs… I am so grateful to you and your fellow musicians.. and for this of course… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYpgsPB-Bkw
Birthday today of the great Luke Kelly….. And the 70th on Thursday of the Gentleman that was Christie Hennessy…… Two amazing Balledeers that left us too soon.
I’ve just finished reading “Olive Oil and Orange Juice”…… what a story Hamish weaves of a different era and a different world, and a few honourable mentions of your good self too…… Good to see the home Gigs are going well…. catch you along the way.
Best regards,
” Don’t forget your Shovel “
Hilary, I agree with what you say about the people attending the gig in Paris who were slaughtered. My heart goes out to all who have been touched by this horror. However, there are many such attacks around the world that do not receive the same attention in the media. What about Beirut the day before Paris, or Ankara a few weeks ago, or Kenya several months back, to mention a few? These events are given scant attention unlike the attack in France. Here in the U.S., the land of constant violence (domestic and exported), the rhetoric from politicians and many news outlets is appalling, as usual, as they beat the war drums once again.
I sympathise with all who are killed, whether it be in France, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Palestine, or the countries where innocents are annihilated by U.S. drones. (The latter never get a mention in the press.) It is clear that in the eyes of the Western media, some people are considered to be more important than others.
How ya christy.
There’s a song that you sang and I think you wrote one time, called “daddy swing me high”. I remember hearing it on a single that was released (encore) many moons ago.
Would you remember the lyrics to that song? I don’t see it up on the Web site here or maybe I have the name of it wrong.
I do be singing bits and pieces of it to our 4 month old boy while he’s practicing his roar for the next croke park outing that kildare might be in.

my Nephew, Conor Byrne, recorded an album 20 years ago called “Wind Dancer”, I guested on that album with a version of that song….
just discovered that the track also featured on an album called “Forgotten Angels” in aid of Temple St Children’s Hospital…..
further info emerges…the lyric was written by the poet Mary O’Malley
You’ll enjoy this… I got a job singing songs in a retirement home, they wanna hear Luke Kelly, Johnny Cash & Christy Moore… I finally got a gig in this town ; p
Hope the gigs went well, Dylan
Christy's reply
not forgetting Dylan Walsh..make sure you sing some of your own….played many of those gigs myself over the years..always good to have a few standards in the repertoire…its all a learning curve…good luck to you
Hi Christy,
Thanks for a great gig in NewtownMountKennedy last night. Yourself and the boys lit up Wicklow with your great mix of new and old songs. We loved every minute. Thanks a mill for the request for your No. 1 fan Stevie of Lisdoonvarna. He really enjoyed it and thanks for your thoughtfulness at the end of the gig. It will go up on the bedroom wall with a great picture of yourself and Stevie from the Bord Gais a couple of years ago.
Best wishes,
Paul Deignan

great to see Stevie again..to witness his spirit and hear his laughter…thanks for sharing
I just followed your tip about youtube and had a Carthy discusses Dylan nightcap. As fascinating and engaging as I’ve ever heard Martin. His evaluation of Dylan’s work and modus operandi is dead on ,as well as indirectly, being an accurate assessment of his own approach to interpreting and performing a diverse range of songs throughout a long career. eg Carthy’s version of ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ is as riveting as his way of capturing the drama of an epic trad ballad.
.Despite a lengthy interview with Andy Kershaw on BBC radio, the ‘owner’ of the Judas shout didn’t really help his cause ….and its probably only an act of crass stupidity that would make Carthy resort to violence!
Many thanks for the youtube info.Interviews as insightful as this one are priceless.
Watch out for frogs inside the socks ,after all the rain……..Dave

Gotta get up and look for the porridge, gotta scrub the gnashers and pull on the breeks, gotta check the route map and find our way thru the peaks heading deep into the Boglands of Laois/Kildare /Offaly til we find the lights of Maryborough. Thats were we set up today.
Its dark and lonely work but someones gotta do it.

Am reading some great comments here, Dagrab there’s plenty of interest in the music of McColl plus one Mr Guthrie around here be assured and it will be a great thing to see a tribute concert tour for the great Ewan here on our shores next year. Peggy (Seeger) toured Ireland a few years ago, I saw her.
Christy's reply
Certain Ewan MacColl songs are part of our National Repertoire now. Many hundreds of thousands of Irish People know Ewan’s songs but not the author himself. I believe that the true sign of a great song is when the the song itself long outlives the name and memory of its author. The Hit Parade ? Forget it.
Ralph is an old mate. Up until 1967 I played a cheap Spanish Guitar. Ralph convinced me to change. When I’d gathered the price he accompanied me to Ivor Mairants guitar shop in London where he helped me choose my first “proper”guitar. It was a Yamaha FG 180 which I played for many years. Back then Ralph was the biggest “turn”on the circuit. I gained a few support slots with him. His brother Bruce managed him back then. Bruce came to a gig of mine in London in early 1968 Afterwards he assessed my performance. His critique was a turning point in my working life. His words still ring in my ears. I owe them both for the help and advice offered me almost 50 years ago.
Hi Christy,
You were talking about Gordon Lightfoot with another poster.
Thought you might like to know that he plans to tour in the UK and Ireland in 2016….his first time over here for 35 years! (I’ve only seen him gig once and that was on his last tour here, all those years ago). Looking forward to your gigs in London and Brighton in 2016 too 🙂 Best Wishes.

thanks for sharing the good news…thats a date in the diary for next June
Hi Christy
I hope the plans go well for the Ewan MacColl tribute gigs.Ireland is in for a treat…..
Thanks for the youtube tip.I once played a support gig for Martin Carthy in Disley and drove him to his overnight digs in Chorlton. It was a foggy night and I drove ultra slowly ,so I could pump him for the Dylan stories……eventually I had to drop him off but we’d managed a few.Amazing times……..and as Martin proved last week at ‘The Lowry’,he’s still a champion at keeping them rolling.
Good luck on travels and gigs.If Abigail hits you, she’ll be after me next.
Take care-Dave
Christy's reply
Martin Carthy has been an inspiration to many over the past 55 years. When I landed in England he was blazing a trail with Swarb..their gigs were spellbinding and groundbreaking….ever since he has ploughed a straight furrow through different fields…his playing and singing remain to the forefront…always a pleasure to meet him and Norma
his reflections on Bob Dylan are insightful but funny too..and he gives the finger too…I loved his description of what he’d like to do to the twat that screamed “Judas” at Dylan in The Free Trade Hall. Never before hear a “good kick in the arse” so well described
Missed Trim last week, was set to go but sure something popped up…last time the room lit up when all the chandeliers came on suddenly mid song….
the Barrowland was special again, love it…would love an indoor stand up gig here, would it work ?
anyway, Wally Page, playing this coming Friday 13th in the Annesly house, North Strand road at 9.30pm, thanks….
Christy's reply
It seems like a simple twist of fate….every time Wally plays in Dublin I seem to be gigging out of Town…..
I was lookin up the 1975 diary…this week 40 years ago I organized a series of gigs in The Meeting Place in Dorset Street. The pub was the home of the Spillane Brothers Paddy, Sean and Shay. After leaving Planxty I began running gigs there in 1974. One of the Bands that played there in Nov 1975 was The Tara Band. Was Wally in that Band???
Others who played that week included De Danann and The Bothy Band. Not a bad line up for a room that held 160 listeners. It was an exciting time. I was in a band with Jimmy Faulkner,Declan McNelis and Kevin Burke. Kevin joined The Bothy Band shortly afterwards.
Anyone see the Pat Shortt Series on RTE last week? It featured myself and Declan McNelis doing a version of “Go Move Shift” from 1980. Seeing myself I was reminded of a line from an old Willy Clancy song “he was very fond of Black Porter, sure twas bulging out both his eyes”
The song was lifted from a TV series from The Abbey Tavern in Howth. I (sort of ) hosted it. The guests included Planxty, De Danann, Stockton’s Wing, Martin Byrnes, Mary Black, The Pavees, Tom Paxton,Raplh McTell…..The Director was John McColgan then of RTE who went on with Moya Doherty to produce RiverDance …..it was a wild week in Howth…lots of Vino Collapso and sweet bottles of Saltedherrins….talk about sweatin
Hi mo chara. I posted a youtube link from 6 years ago on your fans site, Fairy Tale from New York, you were brilliant and it attracted 70 likes in a few days, committed fans maybe but what would be the chances of you doing it again?
Hi Christy
You,Ed in Athlone and other readers will hopefully be keen to know that there are signs that the Ewan MacColl centenary concert ,’Blood and Roses’ might well be staged in Ireland at some point. There certainly seems to be loads of interest .Also great news that you are working with RTE about the related tribute album.
Its encouraging that the MacColl family are so involved in keeping Ewan’s legacy active. The same for the Guthrie Foundation/Nora Guthrie for Woody’s music and writings. The latest news from there is fascinating in terms of his life and times in New York and the Jewish community being celebrated .Online updates appear regularly.
Wonderful that the music of MacColl,Guthrie,Dylan,Moore et al remains so bouyant. The latest Dylan official bootleg is packed with alternative versions of well known /classic songs.Often a stripped down studio take seems to highlight the nuances of writing in a more direct way than the original release.
Any gems in the Christy Moore vaults that might keep us going until the release of the documentary and new album?Planxty out takes would certainly reveal some gems,I bet.Just thought I’d ask!
Enjoy the forthcoming gigs – Dave

Hi All,,,, its so sad to think that as some of us were enjoying a great gig in Portlaois last evening such devastation was being visited on people in Paris at a gig, enjoying a meal and watching a game,,,, such loss of life and such injuries,,, so hard to comprehend,,,, I thought immediately of our French 4711ers , Maryline , Carole and Daniel…. and others who have joined the tour at times,,, friends of theirs,,,,, lets hope the madness stops,,,,, On a totally different tack mention was made of Gordon Lightfoot and his forthcoming tour and his song on the 40th aniiversary of sinking of the Lord Edmund Fitzgerald….. its seems that they are Irish connections there too,,,, http://www.irishcentral.com/opinion/others/the-irish-american-success-behind-the-name-edmund-fitzgerald-107040433-238052541.html?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Best%20of%20IC%20November%2014&utm_term=The%20Best%20of%20IrishCentral Beir bua agus Beannacht.
