Hi Christy,
Was just reading about the memorial for the Magdalene Laudries and remembering the women who marched and achieved ‘some’ level of justice for the poor souls that passed (women & children) and were interned in unmarked graves. Those that still live carry the unbelievable, inexplicable weight of pain wracked memories, angst and even guilt – though they bear none. I freely admit a tear, when reading a quote from a woman:
Mary Merritt (85) was in the laundries for 14 years.
“Every one of those women should have had a separate grave with their name on it,” she said. “They cut my hair, they took my name, they took my clothes, but I wouldn’t let them take my spirit.” And what a spirit that was! But many were broken…
We look back and ask, “how did it happen, why wasn’t something done at the time?” Hindsight is twenty-twenty vision though and we all have an idea where the blame truly lay.
Now we have the Tuam story and for those that believe in a deity, some all-merciful God, (myself not included) have to ask again, “where was he hiding?”
There’s the thousands of refugees, fleeing persecution and tyranny and we DEBATE whether to take them in?? How quickly we have 1845 etal.
There’s the homeless those that starve, freeze, hunger and beg on the streets, while there are literally thousands of empty houses, throughout the state…what state the Free State? The men and women of ’16 must be wondering why they fought and died for.
I know that YOU have used your voice for many of those that have NO voice, to whom governments pay lip service, then apply the Ostrich Syndrome; bury their head in the sand and hope they’ll go away. For the love of humanity, keep doing it, for its the writers and singers, who seem the only ones capable sometimes of nudging the conscience of those have the power to help.
And on this, International Women’s Day and in the light of the Tuam ‘unearthing’, I/we remember the Magdalene souls, here and gone, for ONLY thing history is good for, is to learn from…otherwise, tis but a catalogue of mistakes.
The Wind Doth Blow for Magdalene
At last, the wind doth blow;
dissipating the maligning mist,
the fearsome fog of ignorance.
And they have come,
hand in hand, with chins aloft…
and so they should.
Weary soldiers, home from war,
the hard-fought battle won,
but oh, what cost, what cost!
We stand, in awe,
imagining their pain…
as if we could.
Constricted cries of shame, for shame;
our guilty tears,
swept from burning cheeks.
beside the righteous flame,
that leaps, we crowd and know…
at last, the wind doth blow.
Good luck & good health

Hello Christy. I hope all is well with everyone. I missed Dungarvan. But Adams photies are like being there. Last time I was there I saw a nice cake shop. So… I forgot to mention that we went to that fine hostelry Monk’s Town in Timoleague. It was fab. The vittles were top drawer. Should anyone pass the wilds of West Cork they should stop there for sure. Anyway have fun. As I speak Nathan Carter is on the Foster and Allen show. All I need is one hit. I’d be made for life. I could open a cake shop in Dungarvan. Xx PS I hope the manager comes back.

its unlikely I’ll make it back up there..very busy here on the Old Sod..stopped goin onto aeroplanes around 1999…they used to put me outa tune…take the odd Ferry now to Hollyhead and Cairnryan…that suits me better then 32.000 feet…
hope your guitar is going well, keep at it, its worth the early struggle….my fingers bled until I learnt a chord or two

Would be great if you taught about paying a visit again sometime!
what a great venue in its hayday…Aiden and Sheila were exceptional hosts…had memorable nights playing there with Planxty, Moving Hearts, Jimmy Faulkner, Kevin Burke, Declan McNelis, Luka, Gabriel McKeon, Noel Hill, Tony Linnane…also heard the Bothy Band there….in the early days we used to stay there, often went to Slattery’s of Bodyke for the cure on Sunday Morning.Once got measured for a suit in the Tailor Moloney across the road…Scariff was a great hub of musical activity when Aiden was in his prime…always remembered
We have a great Singers / Performers night on Sat 11th March in The Punchbowl of Booterstown.
Wally Page will be performing along with some great acts including, Sara Bear Ryan, Eddie Sherlock, Brendan Monaghan, Anne Rynne and a few more…should be a great night…tenner on the night at door . We look forward to hosting the night.
