There’s need to call out the fascists at every turn and dangers in ‘populism’ …that was the theme of my chat with a curator at the ‘Terror’ museum in Berlin – and that was 6 years ago.
On a lighter note…for £3,I’ve just liberated a copy of the first Chieftains LP, from a local charity shop. Probably, worth the money for Edward Delaney’s cover art and Sean Mac Reamoinn’s sleeve notes. These start with a great quote from a poem/ song about a ‘quiet valley’ – I’d like to visit…
‘ There’s music there
And all kinds of sweetness
In the piper’s greeting
At the end of day…’
Great news about your gigs – are you sticking with ‘early doors’ or going hell for leather on the later nights?
All the best
Dave
Christy's reply
I’ll play anytime….early late or in between
…about 35 years ago I was booked to play at The Midas Club,Ballyhaunis,County Mayo……the poster said 9pm gig….at 9pm there was not one listener in the venue..at midnight it was rammed….they knew I would not start until they were ready….
Paddy Moloney kept The Chieftains gigging for 50 years….I always enjoyed meeting him…Himself and Liam Óg together was very special
Hello Christy,
Oh the gigs are appearing and it’s so good to see them. I had a look at the tickets at lunchtime yesterday and the last night was already sold out. I wish I could get to as many gigs as I want. I’d need to be very rich I think. A man I used to work with inherited some money when his wife died. He spent the whole lot on travelling as his house crumbled around his ears. There’s only Russia he hasn’t been to.
So good to see you back in the saddle. I hope there’s more as the year progresses.
I’ve got tickets for the marquee in Cork, still valid and from about 16 years ago is how it feels.
What happened in Tulsk, or shouldn’t I ask?
Rebecca
Christy's reply
lotta water under the Bridge….often pass thru Tulsk on the road West..it seems peaceful these days….
Good to see a few gigs starting to reappear and hopefully things will be better than normal soon. Been a long couple of years but you and other artists have still found ways to keep our spirits high whether by streamed gigs, podcasts, home recording or such. Hard to beat the full scale audience though. Just been reading of Meatloafs gig that seems to have been worse than Tulsk. Here’s a link to the Mary Coughlan interview https://www.irishnews.com/arts/music/2022/01/19/news/mary-coughlan-shares-life-stories-as-a-woman-s-heart-trio-ride-on-2562792/
Amazing coincidence…posted about Berlin, saw a newly arrived newsletter that turns out to be so relevant… http://www.rowanrheingans.co.uk ‘Dispatches on the Red Dress’ sounds like a wonderful project. D
Continuing the theme of Holocaust awareness… http://www.topographie.de is a stunning and sobering museum in the heart of Berlin. ‘Topography of Terror’ is on the site of the SS HQ and explains the 1930s rise of right wing politics in Germany and the related horrors as policies escalated into carnage. I’ve visited twice and had a wonderful conversation with a museum curator on a tour. Lots of info and links via the website. It’s so impressive that the ‘mea culpa’ of late C20th Germany has produced such a powerful resource for all to access.
Following Hilary’s post about Wannsee…it’s a stylish town/suburb. I saw it on a sunny Winter afternoon. Difficult to link it to the atrocities planned from a mansion there.
All the best

its good that museums exist, that retro docs are being featured but fascism is alive and on the increase…it must be the focus of our anti fascist intent
Hi C. What a great service you and Ricky Lynch have done with the song December 1942, as well as the untiring work by Tomi Reichental. This week is the 80th Anniversary of the 90-minute meeting — held in a villa on the Wannsee, a lake on the western edge of Berlin — in which the Holocaust was planned, alongside nibbles and cognac. There was only one point on the agenda: “The organizational, logistical and material steps for a final solution of the Jewish question in Europe. ” The anniversary has a special resonance as the number of survivors of the Holocaust dwindles and as antisemitism and the ideology of white supremacy become resurgent in Europe and the U.S. Four people were held hostage in a synagogue in Texas last week, and antisemitic crimes have also surged in Germany. The minutes taken that day, written in the language of bureaucrats, do not explicitly refer to murder. They use phrases like “evacuation” and “reduction” and “treatment” — but there was never any doubt what they laid out: “The complete elimination of the European Jews,” as Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s chief propagandist, wrote after reading them. Chilling stuff . Of course you had already alerted us many years ago to the dangers of inaction in Yellow Triangle https://youtu.be/xMa9QEeAqL4 Beir bua agus beannacht. H

I think your 16th century lady must be the author…i hope you sent her the royalties.
Amber bead is whisky, often drunk as Burns would say ‘ where droothy neebors, neebors meet’.
Keep on keeping on

So many great posts on here right now. I’m with Rory and the veggie haggis and whiskey. Yum! Brendan, I think I’d go with a phazer set to stun.
Christy, I hope you’re having a good break after the vicar street joy and madness. There might be good news today.
I’m thinking about how grateful I am for the people who’ve pulled off miracles in the last couple of years. That vaccine has got to be one of the achievements of the century. I’m so grateful to be surrounded by people who can do these things.
Lots of singing here and harping. Do you think we call it a voice box because we post the vowel into it like a letter?
Love to all.
Rebecca

I agree…
I give thanks
when I hear the anger ,abuse, hatred that abounds
I give thanks for all good people who sacrifice so much to help others,
I’m reminded yet again

protect me from those who have found it ” ( or some such)
Hi christy,
I have been watching an event about the correspondence to and from Burns.
When the man himself was asked why he chose to write in Scots when everyone else understands english, he says ‘english has no words for a Bonnie sweet saunsie lass’.
Good on him, defender of his traditions.
Have you ever sung any Burns?
A vegetarian haggis and some amber bead , whilst reciting as much of Tam O’ Shanter as i can remember, is now long over due.
Och aye the noo
Rory
Christy's reply
is that mead, if no, what is bead….
I’ve heard bits o Burns along the way but never found my way in to cover
there was rumour that he penned “The Curragh of Kildare”
but I hae me doots
If twas he, then fair play to him
but I have seen evidence to suggest that it was written by Lily De Flourbag from Mylerstown circa 1539
as for Haggis…..I’ll have to leave it with you
Shine on Rory
Hello, Christy Moore and friends of. A handful of listens now of Flying Into Mystery brings to mind a term I read describing a person’s life during later years: Perfect imperfection.
I don’t yet require hearing devices, but have been wondering if a pocket remote can dampen intrusive sounds. Some here seem convinced yelling through masks is needed in order to be heard.
Christy's reply
pocket remotes are available
mine has wee controls behind the ear
I can quell intrusion or switch to Nirvana from phone
wonderfull bits of kit
Hello Christy,
Thankyou for recommending the 1916 portraits and lives book, illustrated by David Rooney. It arrived here yesterday with the very patient postman, it weighs a ton and is a thing of beauty.
The pictures are beautiful, I hope I will see the originals next time I’m in Dublin.
Hi Christy, just read a great article (you’re mentioned) about Mary Coughlan ‘A Woman’s Heart trio Ride on’ Love her music and have been to see her a a number of times. Last time was during the West Belfast Festival in 2016 when she raised the roof of Clonard Monastery with Ride On. Knocking on Heaven’s door again about duets and wondering if you have ever sang Jimmy MacCarthy’s song with her. Would love front row seats for that. Mary
Christy's reply
No better woman to rattle the Monastery..I first met Mary when Planxty played the Aran Islands in 1972/3 ish….we’ve not duetted yet
My name is Emer Rafferty, I am an environmentalist and climate activist from Armagh. There is a climate change event on in Armagh Marketplace 15th March which young people will be speaking at, a very important event it will be. We are looking for a musical artist who has a background in writing about the beauty of our land, the urgent action needed by all levels of society and how the clock is winding down.
Raising awareness of this global catastrophe that is upon us is crucially needed because many people still cannot see the truth of the situation. As you say in my favourite song “ Hey old man, what did you do?
We were depending on you”. We would be ever so grateful to have your talent and message present.
Kind regards
Emer Rafferty

a little bit late but I’d like to thank you for this amazing evening in Vicar St. It felt so good to be back here and see you after all this time live. The audience didn’t sound like half. It was great. It such a difference to concerts in Germany.
Thanks to the whole crew for making it happen. Stay well.

Thank you…I have great memories of German audience….Markethalle and Musikhalle in Hamburg to name but two….
Hello Rebecca to find out what happened in Tulsk put Christy Moore in Tulsk into the internet and read Joe Brolly’s article
I look forward to the return gig in Tulsk
