Christy,
Happy New Year to all, heading into a better year.
One of our own died Joe Harrigan from the Barracks,
one of the talented music families. “Walking the Streets in the rain” was written by Joe with Teresa Conlon and George Prendergast for Butch Moore and the 1965 Eurovision.
Were you away in London at that time doing the folk clubs ?
Christy's reply
I remember Joe from way back in National School…his Father was a good singer and his Sisters Marie, Pauline & Frances all starred in the annual Pantomime….never knew he was a co-writer of Butch’s big song all those years ago….
Butch’s brother Des Moore played on “Unfinished Revolution” and another brother Tommy Moore played in the original Moving Heart’s line up before Eoghan O’Neill came on board
My Folk Club years began in 1966..in’65 I was a junior bank clerk in the National Bank in Ballyhaunis,County Mayo….I had digs with Mrs Nestor and drank loose porter in John Morley’s pub next door to the (long since gone) Bank…
Hope all is well in Clogh….
Morning Christy happy New Year to you and yours let’s how this year will be a better year for everyone best of luck tonight ground hurling
The Massey is topped up with diesel and parked on the side of the hill facing east for the jump start hoping to head off early the lights are a bit temperamental and I might go the old roads it hasn’t been taxed since 83
Have a good one face the puck out
Christy's reply
I expect you have the Massey back in the shed by now….its a windy one back up here tonight…hope we meet up along the road…always good to see your name come up here on the notice board…..may the year be a bit easier on everyone…it was a pleasure to forget about the dreaded for a few hours. at the gig….great audience ….
Hello Christy,
And a very fine player and number 8 he is. I’ve watched him with great interest.
The Rose must be very proud of him. My nephew, Samuel seems to be heading in the rugby direction. He’s grown again. 6 foot 2 and size 13 feet. He’s 13.
The song is unique, I think. Full of such a combination of things. I could listen to this version a lot, such a brilliant narrative too.
Here’s a link to my recording of Musgrave from the other day https://rebeccaholton.bandcamp.com/track/little-musgrave
I’m really enjoying telling the story, it’s a cracker.
The recording is very quiet, I’m sorry. The sound man is still working things out and I don’t have a clue.
I hope you give them heaven and hell tonight. And may it be the former for you.

Well done with “LIttle Musgrave”…it lives on

I love Woody’s resolutions
Just finished “I was a Boy in Belsen” today on your recommendation. Tomi tells his story in such a powerful way. I don’t think I have read a book cover to cover in such a short space of time. What a show of strength from the man to achieve so much in life after his early experience.
Enjoy the return to HQ tomorrow.. will catch you next week God willing..

got a call-out for “Rosalita & Jack Cambell” ..I took a chance and they turned up

Hi Christy, I wish you and all listeners/readers/writers a Happy New Year, hopefully with lots of live gigs, loads of music and songs and many interesting posts and links in this guestbook!
Last year you provided many hours of fun, great entertainment and distraction in these strange times with your still available lockdown sessions, the new album, the concerts at NCH and of course at Vicar St – thank you so much for my perfect pre-Christmas present 😊 !!!
Good luck for the next gigs at Vicar St!
Would be great to see you some day here in Germany again 😉 All the best Birgit

Hi Christy. Hope your doing well.. Looking forward to the gig tomorrow evening . Bringing my 3 sons. Padraig 14, Caomhan 12 and Cathal 10.. Wondering if you can give a wee shout out. It is Cathals first christy experience..
The gig in letterkenny a few years ago, you really looked after us.
Thanks again
Happy New Year Christy! Looking forward to tomorrow’s gig in Vicar St, bringing Dad who is an avid fan as part of his Christmas present. Would be so grateful if you could play Cliffs of Dooneen for James tomorrow night 🙂
Hello Christy,
This is one hell of a song https://youtu.be/B7_9h0uk65M
Sounds like to could have been an encore.

have not heard that for recording 25 years…I’d like to do it again sometime..reckon it could be a lot better…I’ve gigged it once in the last 30 years..the Rose herself came to a gig and requested it… I met her young lad a while back… he has toured (notably) with the Irish & British Lions
Hi Christy. I checked out Rick Rubin’s doc 321 after you mentioned it here. That was a great tip, it’s a brilliant watch. Interesting that not giving out much praise was Lennon’s style, you could see it meant a lot to Paul when he recalled one time Lennon told Paul that he liked his song, he remembered the time and place that it happened. The ‘bardic tradition’ was another good story. Watched Get Back too, great stuff. What a band they were. Happy new year, hope everything goes well for you.
Christy's reply
some lads dont do praise..others throw it about like snuff at a wake
Dear Christy,
Firstly a’ the best for the year ahead.
Secondly thanks Rebecca that was the joe Heaney link i was trying to share.
Thirdly i bought a great new album ‘ Protest Songs 1924-2012’ by The Specials, some of you may enjoy ,it is a rare mix of unusual tracks of varying protests over the last 100 years, beautifully performed.
Fourthly i am having one last try at posting a link, though my new year’s resolution ( apart from to drink water) is to make this my only link posting of the year so here goes and who knows what it will disclose…
if you’re gonna post one link a year..better make it a good one..thank you….looking at that photo of dear John brings me right back to when I first met him…I learned the following songs from his singing..
Raggle Taggle Gypsy
Lord Baker
Well Below The Valley
Tippin it Up
What Put The Blood
The Ships Captain (Green Grows The Laurel)
and I’m still considering further songs from his unique repertoire
looking at the photo again, its hard to believe John was only in his early forties when it was taken..he had a hard life but never complained…he was very surprised when his singing was of interest to others….Mrs Bridie Grehan recognised the wealth of his repertoire before any of us heard him….Tom Munnelly saved his song for posterity…just in the nick of time
Theres glasóg sráide that comes to the back door here.
She likes a sprinkle of porridge and I was getting a bit attached to her I feel like she was sent by my dad , go ndéanfadh Dia trócaire air.
I shared my fondness of the glasógín’s visits with my daidó….he said “Colm , they are not a good bird ..the fishermen said long ago if you kill her you break 3 ribs in the devils side.!!” I now have a bit of a delima , you see one mans junk is another’s treasure!
I have also noticed a slight revival of the magpies in my dads untimely absence.
Nuair atá an cat amuigh beidh na luchain ag rince!.
Anyhow bliain nua mhaith dhuit a mhac bán, go mbeirimid beo ar an am seo arís.

you have quite a conundrum there, whether to tickle her ribs or break the hurl across them
I’ll leave it with you, only you can find the answer
a year after my Mother died I was recording an album in Ballyvourney (twas either King Puck or Graffiti Tongue)…a small bird sang persistantly and beautifully outside the window…I felt like it was Nancy singing to me..she’s 30 years gone this coming September..I think of her every day..likewise with my Dad who’ll be gone 66 years this coming October..I look at his picture every Day and think of him..
It will be the same for you..as long as you draw breath you will have your Father’s love in your heart…he spoke to me about you and your Sister..always with love and great pride in your achievements…CM(76)
I have learned the words of Lisdoonvarna live how did the ending come about with van the man saying turn it up turn it up and the verse of I tell my ma how did that happen it’s a great finish

there have been so many diversions, ring roads, roundabouts in that old song that I’ve lost track..can you remind me..which version of Lisdoon has a ‘Tell me ma” verse inserted ?..I’ve no memory of it…maybe if I heard it again I’d give it a fresh twirl……
Hi Christy,
Lovely interview by Ronan Collins with Andy Irvine today…. I’m sure you have lots of memories with Andy on the road.
Best regards and every good wish for the new year.
Patsy
PS just had a listen to Andy’s interview with Ronan….what a life of song Andy has shaped, lived, sung and betimes endured..great too that Ronan did extensive homework in preparation for the chat..he brought Andy into some areas of his life I’d never heard of before..
sometimes interviewers regurgitate well trodden paths but Ronan explored Andy’s live thoroughly….yet so much left thru time constraints..I could have listened on…thanks for posting the link Patsy..without your generosity I probably would have missed this gem
the first 2 years of Planxty 1972-3 were among my happiest times on the road…for the first year just the four of us in a Transit van with a 100 watt PA and 4 mics..myself and Liam shared the driving, Andy looked after the kitty and `Donal drew cartoons and rolled gigantic joints…some of them so long you’d have to sit in the back seat to spark them…I have great memories of Andy on the road, not all of them suitable for publication…our early rehearsals were very exciting as we discovered new sounds and gained so many new listeners..we had a residency called The Mugs Gig in Slatterys, Capel St every Monday….another in the Old Shieling on Sundays..then we got a manager, Des Kelly from Galway, a legend in Irish Music , Des recorded our first single on Ruby Record, it charted and we began to fly (in the transit)…PS Thanks for posting Andy’s chat with Ronan…a gem
I’ve been trying to work out how to help Vincent with posting links on the guestbook. I’m not getting very far, I’m sorry.
It’s different depending on whether you’re on a mobile, laptop etc..the main thing is that you copy the website address of where you want to link to, then paste it into your guestbook comment.
The guestbook does all the magic in the background to make ithe link work.
It only allows one link in each post
On my android phone I
Go to the YouTube video I want to link to, and play it
Tap the share button below the video
Tap the copy link button
Go to the guestbook
Start a new post and type some words
Press and hold in the post with my finger
A paste button appears and I tap that.
That puts the link in.
I’ve no idea whether any of this will help or not.
