Go raibh míle maith agat Hilary…and Christy! Apologies for forgetting the contact details. I’m at tercosrich@gmail.com. You’re a fierce sound bunch on here!
Dear Christy,
Interestingly both of those bands have pub names.
The clutha was in glasgow and a helicopter fell onto it, an awful tragedy, i know one mam who survived, dreadful, but it has been resurrected.
Whistlebinkies in edinburgh is a central spot for music, been in a few times particularly in my student days.
Rory
Christy's reply
Arthur Johnston sang with The Clutha…from Arthur I learned “The Ballad of Jim Larkin”..if memory serves Mick Broderick led The Whistlebinkies..the first punkin folkies …I met Mick in The Scotia way back before the ice age
Good ( early) morning Christy,
Great effort from Rebecca, she fair stuns this listener with her growing confidence.
John O’ Dreams is guie elusive tonight, i shall play the box set’s perfect but imperfect version soon to see if that does the trick. Oh how i adore that song.
Meanwhile i have tried counting sheep, deep in the heart of the country where we used to reive them centuries ago.
The story of the Reiving Clans is well told in the book The Debatable Land by Graham Robb. We inhabited, then, a portion of both Scotland and England that neither crown could take because it was so unruly, something to be very proud of.
Jethart Justice began here amongst the reiving folk as clans ‘disobeyed’ the crowns. Fascinating stuff….now back to the counting of yows, tups and hogs……home comes the rover.

I still recall the night I heard Bill Caddick sing that song..twas in Halesowen of a Tuesday…he shared it generously ..
I heard a Band once called The Fife Reivers..maybe in The Mucky Byre or The Auld Triangle…did you ever hear The Clutha ? The Whistlebinkies? The MacCalmans?…such a great lively scene from which so many emerged to international acclaim…The Big Yin, Gerry Rafferty, The Incredibles, Bert Jansch, John Martyn, Barbara Dickson, Shaggis….all of them kicked around that old Folk scene in some form or another…Aly Bain, Paddie Bell, Dolina McLennan, …..
my Scottish journey began in the Glasgow Folk Centre , Montrose St in 1967 and continued right up to Barrowland in 2019..one just as good as the other and a thousand sheebeens in between………O Glory Hallelujiah the cod liver oil and the orange juice
No point in getting the saddle out for the Auld Grey Mare so……
We will keep on checking the gig page ….hope springs eternal.

I hope Tyrone can take the field and test the Kingdom mettle….The Dubs are exhuding confidence at an awful rate up here in The Black lagoon…they do seem all conquering….the hurling promises an almighty tussle…
the next album has gone to the factory for pressing…after 18 months I signed off last week…they tell me that it will be November before they’ll have it wrapped in cellophane….there is talk about a few gigs but who knows..we’re all still flying into mystery…between Golfgate and Merriongate everything can turn to shite at a moments notice
hope all is well in The Black Valley
Hiya Christy! Hope you’re well & happy. I’m just wondering if any of your loyal followers on here would have a clip of you performing Lisdoonvarna in Killashee (February15th 2020), specifically the part where you said “some of you were probably conceived there”. I wasn’t, but I bet I know a few who were! 😉 Even audio would be great. Thanks a million, Teresa.
P.S. I’m pretty sure it was Killashee but may have been Athy…happy to be corrected. Thanks again!

TC….your query has been answered from across the Shannon estuary…tis between ye it is….
Hello Christy,
Its my gig on Friday. Its for Togetherwell, they’re a mental health charity who provide support to front line medical and care workers. They’re based somewhere on the West Coast of America. So I’ll be performing at 2.30am, our time. The middle of the night.
I’ve been trying to work out how to do this without disturbing anyone. There’s a conservatory on the back of the house that you can shut off. It becomes like a separate cube of space. We tested it yesterday and I sound like a quiet TV once I’m shut off, so it should be ok.
I’ve got 30 mins and I’m on last.
I’m going to play
Yellow furze woman
Musgrave
Bright blue rose
Lullaby of London
Spancil hill
The parting glass.
They come in at just under 30 min. So not much time for talking.
I’ve got a session with a technician sometime in the next 2 days. I’ve no idea what that is but having no idea what’s going on is one of my specialities…
I don’t know if anyone here would be interested in having a listen. 2.30am is not the best time…
Here’s a link to the event, just in case https://fb.me/e/19jU0zS3B

Hello Christy,
I’ve spent many happy hours watching and listening to Declan Sinnott working with you.
He plays with his ears, not his ego. It’s a wonderful thing.
Jimmy Higgins is the same.
Folk singers and folk musicians are an interesting lot.
Rebecca
Christy's reply
Declan’s interest in music runs far and wide…over 20 years I’ve passed his room in a hundred hotels, always to the sound of music….folk music among his interests but certainly not foremost…always a joy to sing and play songs with him…
Jimmy is an accomplished “band”man…possesses a calm “overview” of whats goin down…listens to and hears the complete picture….
we’ve had some good times..made plenty of noise along the way
Brilliant stuff Christy. I’ll rattle through all that & see where it leads me. Thanks for taking the time with it. I can actually remember the ‘Spirit Of Freedom’ album being reissued in 2007 or so. I was working at Celtic Note on Nassau Street in Dublin at the time. The shop enlarged the album covers for the window display & I kept three of them from my time at Celtic Note over 2007/2008. Van Morrison’s ‘Keep It Simple’, Luke Kelly’s ‘Working Class Hero’ & your own ‘Spirit Of Freedom’. They’re up in the Ma’s attic still. Gonna enjoy going back to listen to that album again so. Love how things come around on themselves like this…
Barbara Dane said she gave the band their name, but I know the band name was linked to the words of Wolf Tone. I was supposed to talk to Barbara over the weekend just gone, but she was unwell. It’s rescheduled for next week. She’s 94 now. A decent recent article on herself. What an incredible life. Thanks again Christy
Among those big moments where we saw the Tricolour raised aloft on some world and European stages, I did feel emotional as I watched our flag raised up in Tokyo. Delighted for Kellie and all involved.
Sandy Denny, Blackwaterside, the acoustic version, there’s nothing to beat it. A BBC recording, Paris, 1972, has appeared online.
Christy's reply
Kellie’s light burns bright…she gives so generously….never forgets her Family, her Street, her Community..always shows love and compassion for the vanquished..
I hope the news hounds give her some space to breathe….
Hope yer keepin’ well Christy. Keeping busy over this way. Was wondering, would you know much about ‘The Men Of No Property’ at all? I’ve been listening to their albums there over the last few days. Grand aul documents indeed. Quite a few tunes grabbed me, especially this one: https://youtu.be/PZmPAzriQic
I’ve a scheduled chat with Barbara Dane (for The Stirring Foot project I’ve been working on) who released them ‘anonymously’ on her Paredon label, later to be donated to Smithsonian. That track above is from Folkways. No bother if ye don’t get around to it. Chat soon, Dylan
Christy's reply
I got “The Men of no Property” album from Frank Connolly, journalist, author, activist and friend….still have it here somewhere….thats where I first heard Jack Warshaw’s “No Time For Love”….also covered Brian Moore’s* “Jesus Christ & Jessie James” and Joe Mulhearn’s “Granny’s Dustbin Lid” on an album called “Spirit of Freedom”….(which was usurped by WEA after it was recorded as a fund raiser for Prisoner’s dependents)

Early morning i took the bidie-in’s dog for a leg lift or two.
Before the rain arrived i was wandering amongst the oaks and limes, breathing in the clean Borders air, when over the headphones came

Do you remember what riled you into the wonderfully clear and driven list on Who Cares??
