Hi Christy , how’s she cutting?
Just heard it’s 45 years since the Miami Showband massacre and Stephen Travers asked performers all over the globe to “sing a song with the hashtag #MiamiShowband.”
So I thought it’s a good time to share with you a song I wrote about the heyday of the showbands, and a tale my mother used to tell me of the devil showing up at one of the gigs in Mayo, under the shocked eye of none other than Father Horan!
I can hear you doing it, adding to it.
Anyway, thanks for the podcasts as the gig drought continues. Really enjoying them.

I was always on the lookout for cloven hooves

I listened to the Song about Songs that John posted.
I feel like I know the tune. Maybe it’s one of those that has evolved across different songs. Kind of fitting for the subject matter. It made me think of mining songs.
The line
I hope you find a song that loves you for all time.
It’s the best I could wish for any singer.

Christy, over 50 years ago for my birthday my dad bought me an old (second hand) record player and two second hand LPs, one of which was a Ray Charles album. I remember thinking at the time why has he bought me this ‘old man’ music when he could have bought me a Beatles or Stones album.. Forward 20 years and I was lucky enougth to get the chance to see Ray Charles in Liverpool and jumped at the chance. I’ve been luckey enougth to have attended numerious concerts to see numerious artists over the years but seeing Ray Charles play live is one of my most memorable, maybe my dad was right after all?.
Hi Christy, I remember buying old singles from Radcliffe market with no middles in them for 2 shillings, think they were off juke boxes, you had to attach a re-usable plastic device to play them! Limited selection, I can remember getting Little Eva, ‘Locomotion’ we used to share them around because money was tight. The only original vinyls I still have is the early Dylan’s, Bert Jansch Sampler, Leonard Cohen and my husband’s early Stones LP’S.
This all makes me feel about 100years old, sometimes I catch a glimpse of myself walking past the mirror and wonder who let that old woman in.
Hope the gigs soon materialise. There’s warnings in North West this morning about an increase in virus, it’s just fingers crossed time again.

these days,the only time I ponder before the mirror is when shaving….recently, as I scraped my jaw , I saw my 72 year old Mother looking back at me…..Nancy Power left us 28 years ago but she winks at me every time I shave….

have you ever heard ‘Song about Songs’ by Sean Wheeler & Zander Schloss (it is on YouTube) I can imagin you singing it & you would love the sentiment ‘some songs are like diamonds coming up from the mine’. Also I know from your conversations with Adam that you are into your films. There was a great one on Film4 last night a Polish film called Cold War from 2018 about a couple who met whilst travelling around Poland just after the second world war making recordings of traditional Polish folk songs, shot in black & white the cinematography was amazing (and the music was great). Looking forward to Lockdown 9, stay safe. John

we have so much music floating thru the air in the new world..a neverending cacophony at our finger tips…I sometimes wonder did I listen differently when it was more difficult to access…
I recall the excitement surrounding the purchase of my very first record…a 78 RPM single of Elvis’s “Jailhose Rock” after a while 45’s arrived and it was Elvis again with “Mess of Blues”…. each purchase was momentous in our young lives…gathering the pennies. ( if memory serves, a 45 rpm single cost 4 shillings and sixpence, 4/6)..ordering from Mr McGovern’s Electrical Shop…going next door to Deirdre Murray’s House (they had a record player before us ) ..the anticipation,the excitement,the jive…. Then came a Clancy Brother’s LP from America…my buddy Pat McGowan told me about an album his Brother Turlough was playing….I’m in 1959 writing this…an old man writing a letter to his young self….
this early morning,on this device, I am a few clicks away an eternal jukebox..

I had my haircut the other day. All the hairdressers were wearing visors.
I’m waiting for the powers that be to say singing is ok in a visor.
It will be like a monsoon. Windscreen wipers or an anti steam gizmo?

I’ve added it on the list..after 8 weeks that list gets longer by the day….I’m enjoying all the call outs.. from far and near they arrive here, on facebook and youtube…..small comfort in the absence of gigs but comfort nevertheless
Christy, watching a video of Planxty circa 1974. Always loved the frost is over. Have you ever sang it post Planxty? If so it would be hup there with Derby day…just wondering…just requesting. Go Well.

That was Planxty with Johnny Moynihan ….Johnny was the featured singer on that track with Liam,Andy and myself backing him..

Love the links that emerge here…recently read a piece about Carnsore Point… at http://www.headstuff.org if you put ‘Carnsore Point ‘into the site’s search box,there’s an in depth piece about context and holding of ‘Ireland’s Woodstock'(their words,not mine!)
Fintown is the one that jumps out…. @1980 ….. I wasn’t there I’m afraid…..

Was it yourself or Planxty or a gathering of many concerned folks.
Ger was on some protests….. one of which was on the Gweebarra bridge.
With about 2000 people involved that day.

Lettermacaward is correct..adout in The Poisened Glen….that gig was organised by the collective that formed origins of the Irish Anti-Nuclear Movement…I remember that gig as being an extension (or continuation) of the Anti-Nuclear Roadshow
The supermarkets resemble operating theatres with all the masks etc…hopefully,we’ll all keep safe…
Great Luka based chat,earlier-some brain wracking too…an ace selection of songs-some crackers for lockdown sessions perhaps,as long as you fancy keeping them going…With Andy at mission control/harmonies-it would be a family production,in more ways than two…

we drove thru The Naul last week..saw the Seamus Ennis Centre with his statue positioned outside..
last time I was there I was visiting him in his home which he called Easter Snow
