Congratulations Aisling the absence of John O Dreams, would appear to have been worth it! As a previous winner I understand your jubilation. Spot on Hilary reconnecting is right! Loved the programme/album bringing it all back home you reminded me of this album with your mention of Streets of Laredo/The Bard of Armagh. Bob also had an album called BIABH…my Favourite L.P though is Blood on the Tracks. Thanks Christy

Red sails in the sunset
Way out on the sea
Oh, carry my loved one
Home safely to me
She sailed at the dawning
All day I’ve been blue
Red sails in the sunset
I’m trusting in you
Swift wings you must borrow
Make straight for the shore
We marry tomorrow
And she goes sailing no more
a favourite song of youthful days written by Tyrone’s very own Jimmy Kennedy….covered beautifully by Nat King Cole….
“The Bard of Armagh” was the 2nd song I learned after diverting from rock&roll to The Clancy’s…..I had two chords C and G7
the piece by John Prine is under ‘columns’ ,the piece about him is under ‘stories’ on the ‘No Depression’ site, but a few interesting diversions elsewhere too..D
Brilliant to hear about the custom built Planxty PA.Way ahead of your time on that one…I had a hunch it was Nicky Ryan at the mixer, but figured I might be making that up…I was at several Clannad gigs around ‘Harry’s Game ‘ times…very impressive mix of electro/acoustic layers,so,once again,Mr Ryan showing expertise.
Also, agree about ‘I pity the poor immigrant’ being amongst Bob’s best…one of numerous highlights at your Bridgewater gigs was you and Declan playing a wonderfully mellow version of the song,a few years back…the new Wally Page song,is now a point of intrigue!
Today’s bunker music and reading is courtesy of http://www.nodepression.com …the US roots mag…a bit of a messy site, but worth a few clicks on the topic headers for a poignant piece by John Prine, written not long before his recent death.Another article about his times and lots of bits and pieces that catch the eye…a bonus is a video of Bob’s old mucker,David Bromberg, with a foot stomping band…and a few songs selected by the mag.I’ve had worse Mondays planned!
Good luck with the day’s tasks

Thanks for your reply Christy. And what a pleasure it was sharing a table with Adam. Great songs, great singing and music, great company. It doesn’t get much better than that.

That gig in Vicar St. was absolutely spectacular by the way. I’ve worked outside the country every year since that year so I haven’t had the chance to go again. It was an amazing night, my mam and I will never forget it.
Christy's reply
best to you and your Mam…..give us a bit of your story
Hi Christy,
Hope you and yours are keeping well in these times. I saw you live 4 times during 2010 but unfortunately I haven’t seen you live since. The last that year was in Vicar Street, my mother and I were sitting at a table in the front row right in front of you. We couldn’t believe our luck with the seats. It was tables for 3 people at that time, don’t know if they still do it like that. I was feeling proud of myself having seen you 4 times that year, like I was being a really big fan and what have you. The third person at our table was a young guy from wicklow I think, he had seen you 30+ times that year, I think he said he’d been to England that year to see you too. That put me back in my box, my answer changed to ‘just the 4’ haha.
I was thinking earlier about my favorite Bob Dylan song. Decided on One of Us Must Know but my answer will probably change the next time I think about it. Do you have a favorite Bob Dylan song? (I was going to ask for a top 5 but thought that might be pushing it).
Christy's reply
That “young Wicklow lad” was Adam…he has been a regular listener for many years…he has also become an excellent photographer, we’ve have used some of his shots in recent publications.
Bob continues to surprise, enchant, challenge, confuse, entertain, tickle, shame, encourage, obfuscate ..( I’m takin a chance with that one)
Sound Der, we’re doin OK here this night Thanks Be (we got a real good President)….the world is spinning madly, adrift in the dark, seems to be dyin and its hardly been born
My fave Bob song, always was, always will be ..”I pity the poor immigrant”
“He sings Homesick Subterranean,Hard Rain’s gonna fall,When the boat comes in,Black Diamond Bay,The Dirge and Hurricane….
Summer Days, Forever Young, Hattie Carroll & Hollis Brown,St Augustine, Maggie’s Farm & Like a Rolling Stone”
……….(chorus of a work in progress by Wally Page)
I’d agree with the Aussie reviewer.Christy…was Johnny Mulhearn an arranger for Planxty as well as being the the maestro who compiled that epic version ?
I was hooked on the ‘Woman I loved so well’ LP by such a strong opening song..’True Love …’ remains a classic and it was a highlight of a Bridgewater Hall gig a few years back…lovely interplay and harmonies between yourself and Declan.
The textures of complementary instruments was such an ace feature of all Planxty lineups and impressed me ever time I was at a gig. Also, the excellent PA-very much ahead of its time in the 70s,especially.
That’s the evening listening sorted…
all the best
Dave
Christy's reply
“Let us sing of that fine Suffragette who stands on Peter Square”
No Dave, Johnny was never involved with the Band……I met him first in Galway in the 70s…then again with Wally Page in the 80s….I was fortunate to get the opportunity to record three of his songs….”Matty”, “Hard Cases” and “Continental Céilí”.Johnny and Wally still gig together.
Donal Lunny was always the principle arranger of Planxty music and he produced all our albums apart from the first three which were produced by Phil Coulter.
Interesting to read your comments about Planxty’s Sound System in the early 70s. That system was designed by our Sound Engineer Nicky Ryan who had it custom built to his specification. After Planxty Nicky went on to Produce and develop the Clannad Sound. Subsequent to that he has worked closely with Enya and produced all her albums. We last worked together when he recorded my “Ordinary Man ” album at his Aigle Studios. You may notice that Enya provided some beautiful vocals on 3 tracks of that album. We hear an early sign of the trememdous success that was soon to follow.
Competitive lot the 4711ers…. well done Aisling.

Keep the quiz questions coming.

I’d also love to hear a live version of ‘Musgrave.’..long been a favourite song, since Fairport’s ‘Matty Groves’…just looked at Matty’s entry on Wikipedia and there’s enough diversions for an afternoon in the bunker…so,that’s where I’m headed ,with a cuppa…
Keep well and all good wishes to all
Dave
Christy's reply
What about “our own” Matty ?
So beautifully crafted by Johnny Mulhearn..
Many years there was a review in the Sydney Morning Herald after a Concert in Sydney State Theatre.
The reviewer described Johnny Mull’s song as the best Folk song he had ever heard.
Hi All… what great fun that was,? people re- connecting with the songs and with one another !! just what the guestbook is all about,,, Mighty Congrats Aisling, a frequenter of many gigs here and abroad and a very loyal 4711er not to mention a Lily White freisin. Well Christy the bookies shop still says closed, and i don’t have an online account,so i had to ask around for tips in the inaugural running of the Christy Moore Veterans Handicap Chase .
I heard there was going to be big money bet on the jolly favourite Hilary so i got a friend to put a fiver on her on betfair BEFORE THE DELUGE of cash flooded in.
Shane MacGowan reckoned an 18 to one lucky one FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK would be in the winners enclosure .
The dog reckons that the four will include BONING HALL.
Young JOXER ( the horse that is) reckons his namesake will be in there, carrying 2 pound overweight after too much black pudding in a full irish breakfast .
Of the real racing followers, they have been going demented, betting on 2 flies crawling up the wall, but getting together by video they are having a right few quid each way on THE BALLAD OF RUBY WALSH, DERBY DAY, SODDOM AND BEGORRAH and RIDE ON to be the four.
Those following the smart money on boys like Marty , well fancied to be still in the running at the last, are reckoning on North of Ireland tunes like WISH I WAS BACK HOME IN DERRY, MCILHATTON, CITY OF CHICAGO and NORTH AND SOUTH.
Her father likes a supp and a punt, and his shrew picks for the 4 selection yankee bet are influenced by the brew, so DELIRIUM TREMENS, JOHNNY JUMP UP, RIDING THE HIGH STOOL and SMOKE AND STRONG WHISKEY.
Goodness only knows what the four fold accumulator of ever present songs were, my own selections have now been changed in my mind several times since i hastily rattled off the four, but the saying in the ring is never change your mind at the races, or always bet the outsider in a three horse race, and always bet the first horse you see at the track.
Some betting heat this, great fun though.
Kick on.

Dear Listeners..
Upon Mature Reflection I have just realised that there were (in facta) 5 tracks played every night…
Thankfully this does not make any difference with regard to the entries already submitted (2 of whom got 2 correct..1 of whom got 3 correct)..
so as not to cause any confusion whatsoever the Committee have decided that the first entry to name 4 of the 5 tracks will be awarded a stunning prize(not a signed plectrum)
The Sub-Committee have decided to stay open until next Sunday when we will reveal the 5 tracks…
The entrant with most correct answers will then be declared the winner (we currently have one entry with 3 correct)
I may have another quiz lined up but I’ll save that for another day
