It is our 50th wedding anniversary on 10 July. Flying from my very local, very new , Carlisle Trans-universe airport (no i could not believe it either) on Friday, drive up to Boyle to see the John Reilly sculpture ,and then down to Donnybrook to see the Scots club international side whup your irish lads ,then down to Punchestown to stay with my old pal DP for a couple of nights.
Saturday sees a trip to Naas races with the other auld pal Jayo Kinane, before a journey up to Trim to listen to you and the team with the craic at 91.
What a weekend, i am almost speechless with anticipation, so rather than request any songs , we are looking forward to hearing whatever you choose to deliver.
I suspect that Cammy and i will be flying ourselves back on cloud 9 to carlisle early on Sunday.

Busy here too with gigs, rehearsals. soundchecks, elections and Wales at Lansdowne Road… I got the call from Coach Farrell late last night, I’m on stand to offer extra coaching to our Number 3 ..a few strikes against the head would help matters enormously and I’m willing to share my experience ,strength and hope with young Tadg Furlong….himself and Cian Healy are regular attendees at gigs…we hold special seats held for them…they both sport spectacularly muscular rear ends….
We just made it out the gate last Sat…Scotland were fired up and could easily have gained the laurels

Just back from a walk around the Bog Meadows and wanted to wish you a belated Lá Fhéile Bhride sona duit. Brigid of Kildare marked the beginning of Imbolc…our pagan ancestors celebrated the passing of winter. Lengthening days and emerging birdsong always welcome. I’ve joined the Féile Women’s choir and one of the songs is Ride on.

County Louth also has devotion to a St Brigid…were there two St Brigids or was Bridie inter-county ?….I am currently interceding (with one or both) on behalf of their name-sake Bríd Smith…I pray that this good deputy might hold her seat in Dublin 8

One of my favorite things about Irish music is that it seems very collaborative; a very tight community. You mentioned a band a couple of months ago called Nava. I’m really enjoying what those boys are putting out. It got me thinking. Have you ever considered doing a podcast where you bring on newer Irish bands for a little conversation about the history/future of music on the island? You could reminisce about your past/present in music and maybe play a song or two with these new guys. It could be very informal. I know how busy you are so you wouldn’t need to put out episodes at a regular interval, just when the spirit moved you. Just a suggestion. By the way, just recently discovered your version of “Lightening Bird Wind River Man”. Wonderful! I hope you’re enjoying your short break between gigs.

Declan O’Rourke’s “Bird Wind River Man” is a classic …what a great Balladeer he is…just about to release a new album produced by one of England’s finest..(Paul Weller)
I have considered the podcast idea…I’m always “considering” swathes of projects until a new song comes along and takes over ….these days its a new song from Jim Page ” Clock to Zero”, also reworking “Dark End of The Street”,some new verses for “DTs”, new verses for”Tuam Beat”and “Oblivious”,a new song from John Spillane, and other songs winking at me from the post pile…
in the 60s it was difficult to extend the repertoire, very few were writing seriously ( apart from MacColl, Domo Behan,Ian Cambell, Matt McGinn,and whoever I’m leaving out !)….these times are so exciting with a great profusion of songwriters many of whom share their work with me..my own pen has run dry but that causes me neither surprise nor worry…I’d rather sing a good song from another source then a bad song of my own..still get ideas for songs… a great Sunday Miscellany prog on RTE Radio this morning dedicated to James Joyce..got an idea for a song which I’ll tackle soon (perhaps)
“Nava” make sweet refreshing Music..also hearing sounds of “Lazarus Soul” and “Fontaines DC” ringing around the house..
Getting ready to rejoin “Companeros” this week and also looking towards some gigs with “The Trad Outfit” come the Summer…and a few solo gigs too

its 31 years since I put the cork in the bottle
and it takes us all day to do our gig,
we rehearse at 4, soundcheck at 5 and warm up at 7.30
afterwards I towel off,drink tea, chat with the band and hit the hay
in earlier decades I’d have shared a gallon or two with you ’til dawn
many many years ago I was leaving a pub with Barney McKenna…after an all nighter we stumbled out into the morning sun….Barney turned to me and said “is’nt there a great stretch in the evenings”

Just booked the tickets back to wexford for july and the opera house…hopefully the heating is on and the bats dont go crazy 🙂 this time bringing my daughter who will be nearly 2 in July, my wife was 3 months pregnant last time we seen you in gorey…I requested john o dreams but somehow got our Friday and saturday mixed up at the time as johonny Sexton kicked a winner …..anyway….I’ve thanked u in the past for the music and the songs..the personal joy your songs bring…30 concerts plus from the dunmuire to electric picnic but the most joy I’ve ever felt is watching my daughter dance around the living room floor to planxty and your traveler album…she loves the base in traveler and bops around hands in the air twirling around and laughing….its fun to watch her do that to that particular album..(graffit tongue is still my fav album..I just thing it’s a simple stand alone piece of art) ..she love the starting gate also when I play it on you tube(really wish that planxty album was available on digital!!) …anyway…I’m not much good with the writing or expressing…but thanks again….watching her dance and clap her tiny hands and laugh to the music that saved me manys a time means I’ve done soemthing right….we will see.you in july…fur coats and no knickers!!

Been living in Reekie and working over in Glasgow for 2 and a bit years now and I wouldn’t change a thing. Made the mistake of meeting a Glaswegian girl with a mother from Fermanagh so I reckon I am here for a while.
I was after seeing Daoiri in Edinburgh last summer it was a small intimate session – I am fond of the his Creggan White Hare.

My step father has been battling cancer for the last year and has now been told he only has months to live. He has been a real warrior, but the journey has taken it tole.
He has always loved and found comfort in your music (he’s seen you play and I would say he’s your biggest fan) and has passed that love onto me.
Your music and your words are so powerful and have real magic in them.
I want to thank you for helping my step dad… My dad, through the toughest year of his life. On the hardest days or nights, he would lie on the bed listening to your music and my mum would often lay with him and your music would give them the strength to keep fighting.
Even now, your music gives us strength.

Listening to Dundalk’s fabulous son David Keenan’s new album ‘Subliminal Dublinia’ i came across the mention of Harcourt Street ! The last time i heard of her was in ‘me and the rose’ which got me wondering about whether the incomparable Rose may ever return.
I may well be wrong but i sense that there is still a yearning to sing her live sometime while the gigs continue? I imagine that finding the right occasion would be practically impossible, but who knows, we can live in hope.
Anyway i bet you a mug of tea that Scotland surprise us all and turn over your bhoys in green on Saturday.

I’ve been looking at the words you wrote about Gibbet Rath. They are beautiful, the rhythm of them in particular. I read up about what happened. I have no words.
There’s an acoustic session in Brighouse once or twice a month. Last Monday it was 8 guitars, me and no microphone. Everyone pitches in, so we DID lots of songs that night.
I’ve been learning The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. I sang it to my husband on Sunday. Funny how different songs behave. This one really seems to like people. Bright Blue Rose behaves very differently when I sing it. Sometimes it doesn’t need anyone, not even me.
We have tickets to see you in Ennis. Looking forward to it.

Both “First Time”& “Blue Rose” are fragile and delicate, both imbued with deep emotion, one being ….specific, the other abstract..
I’m still finding subtle nuances in Ewan’s song…its always challenging,I never know what way its going to “behave” on any given night….I think I may have finally found the optimum key

I guess I’ve looked up from the page one too many times saying “I just love him”; my wife finally asked if she should start to worry. I’ve been looking at the words you wrote about Gibbet Rath. They are beautiful, the rhythm of them in particular. I read up about what happened. I have no words.
There’s an acoustic session in Brighouse once or twice a month. Last Monday it was 8 guitars, me and no microphone. Everyone pitches in, so we DID lots of songs that night.
I’ve been learning The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. I sang it to my husband on Sunday. Funny how different songs behave. This one really seems to like people. Bright Blue Rose behaves very differently when I sing it. Sometimes it doesn’t need anyone, not even me.
We have tickets to see you in Ennis. Looking forward to it.

Both “First Time”& “Blue Rose” are fragile and delicate, both imbued with deep emotion, one being ….specific, the other abstract..
I’m still finding subtle nuances in Ewan’s song…its always challenging,I never know what way its going to “behave” on any given night….I think I may have finally found the optimum key

I’ve been re-reading “One Voice” after finding it in an old box during a recent move. Wonderful to hear about the experiences that created the songs that mean so much to me. I guess I’ve looked up from the page one too many times saying “I just love him”; my wife finally asked if she should start to worry. I’m coming over in May to help my son pack up (he’s a student at UCD) for the summer and I’m fortunate enough to have tickets to see you in Claremorris. Can’t wait! “The words wrap themselves around our own lives and we stand in harmony”. That’s the feeling I look forward to. Best to you Christy!

OK Buck….Claremorris Town Hall is a lovely venue…run by Volunteers in the Community, I have enjoyed two previous visits…County Mayo is notable for its listeners…hope you have a good visit, that the “packing up” goes well before you head west
