hi christy….i just wanted to drop in and thank you for yet another fine year of music…I was lucky enough to attend more than my fair share of concerts this year and what a triumphant end to 2019 with the release of magic nights and the podcast which is both a wonderful and informative listen….i really do appreciate along with all other listeners i’m sure with the connections you make with us through your comments on this website ….i’ve a couple of more flights over to vicar street in january to start the year on a good note with auld reekie.. glesga and a couple of nights booked along the carrowbeg to look forward to…i may try to persuade hilary to join me between gigs on a stroll up croagh patrick while we are in mayo….maybe put your name down as a maybe?…shoes optional….so thanks again to you and the crew for yet another wonderful year of music…happy new year to you all…..ta ken
Christy, I hope this message reaches you well. I hope you had a great Christmas! My wife (Tracey Bowman) and I are coming to see you at vicar street on 7th January. She is beginning to learn to play the guitar (inspired by yourself). Her favourite song(s) from the new album are Tuam Beat & Ringing that bell. Please could you show her a few chords? If not give her a shout! All the best for 2020. Alan Bowman.
Now and again.for home listening,I select several LP’s at random, from a favourite artist’s output…interesting to play new/old/older etc,out of release sequence and be reminded of ‘the feel’ of an album…
yesterday was ‘Ordinary Man’…today ‘Lily’…as ever with the latter,’Green grows the Laurel’ is brilliant in its intensity and drama.Have you played it live much?
Also, great to mix ‘live ‘ with studio recordings…’Magic Nights’ is a superb memento of many gigs.As part of your 75th year/50th NET-any plans or time to make a new studio record? However the year pans out,I hope you carry on enjoying the playing…I will!

I hope you had a nice Christmas and the new year is coming now ..I came by to share a story .. I pulled up my currach with tires from the airplanes that go to the islands underneath quite a distance from the water.
Coilín is a man who lets me put her on his land beside the lake.He told me there was always currachs there before him and that there will be after hes on the other side .!
Heading to mass Christmas eve Coilín was at the door He said to me “Did you take your currach.” My heart sank I said no…He said “well shes gone “?.!
Sure enough she was gone nothing left but the oars.Perhaps stolen? I didn’t know what the heck happened.
And it was so dark out what the peck could I do? I said to dad we have to get a boat and check the lake right now .
He assured me that we would find her…… but we would have to wait until lá an dreolín to search because it was dark now and we had a fleet coming Christmas day.Everyone was told not to talk about her missing until the day was over. That was tough.
Early morning Lá an dreolín we got to the lake it seemed like every Tom Dick and Harry were out searching .All my neighbors abandoned the dreolín to help. Through mud and furze and ferns ,rushes ,brambles and water.
I couldn’t help but feel bad that all these people were looking .Coilín explained to me what happened must have been a “cuifeach”.
A sudden swirl of wind that can lift an elephant according to him.! He must have felt sorry for me because he brought me a box of chocolates,He said “You cant open them until you find the boat “.That gave me some courage.
After all day searching .Still no sign .I said ,”Maybe we will never find her” Mom said Don’t worry we will get another one ,I didn’t want another one .
We had to go home no sight of her and I said a prayer to saint Anthony that night.
This morning here was Coilín at the door again. He couldn’t even knock just ran in the door.He said ..Open your chocolates Colm I’ve found her shes on a little island way up North!I cant tell if shes damaged but it looks like shes in one piece. The place went ballistic shouting and hugging and mobiles ringing!
I said to Coilín but how ? There’s no access on foot that side.
He explained he got his grandsons drone and they were up at the crack of dawn putting it over the lake and taking photos! .Showed me a photo of her sank there looking very sad . Imagine CM it was a drone that found her?
,They got a boat and towed her ashore ,she has one rib damaged and a bit of a hole but overall its okay ,shes up at the boat hospital and will be ready for action well before Spring ,talk about relief? I know its not a person but I din’t want anything to happen to her.
Hope this story isn’t too long.

Hey CS
Just noticed that my reply to this post never landed…I wrote you the day after telling you that the crochet socks fit like a glove..that your boat escapade reminded me of when my bicycle was stolen in 1959..a beautiful (second hand) blue Raleigh bought from Mick O’Brien’s bike shop down Coffey’s Lane….it cost me £3 which was hard earned…I went to the pictures in The Curragh Camp and when the picture was over the Bike was gone…I had to walk home the same night but I was’nt on my own….back then I was 14 and totally into Elvis, Buddy, Gene Vincent and Adam Faith….the piano was my weapon of choice and I could rattle out a right few tunes when I got the piano to myself…that was all soon to change when the Clancy Brothers came riding over the Horizon…
you need never worry about long posts here…yours are always interesting ..whether its donkeys, magpies, stone walls, currachs, scoil, snails, goats, cures for colds, neighbours, starring in movies, bouzoukis, your communications are always welcome…
I have Song Of Granite set to record and I’ll watch it when I get home from Vicar St tomorrow night… a mug of tea, a turkey sangwedge and a movie starring my good buddy from Galway
Hi Christy,
I have been here 12 years and when try to speak Swedish, I am automatically a stranger on a foreign shore with my Yorkshire dialects and when either in Church or trying to follow songs and words I know, the music does not sound the same as in English. Why wanting to return Uk. With regard to Rory and Odette Mitchell, they are based in Uk only, not so famous yet to travel though Odette reminds me of when lived in Eire with a not Irish but English folk singer and has played the Cambridge Folk festival.
So if in Uk, maybe some time then who knows can with them and perhaps be support- act to you. Rory just in 1st Year, second semester in his Music Productioin degree in Worthing validated by University in B righton.
. Rory told me to mention a known fiddle player who has played with Odette and Rory couple of times and his name Phil Beer a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and one half English folk group “Show of Hands”.
Have great 2020 vision in all you do ..Anthony
Dear Christy, hope all is well. Enjoying the new album, the old and new songs and of course the podcast. Really nice to hear a bit of the background of the songs. Working myself on a new theatre concert program with the lads for 2020-2021. A list of new “old” songs with some new arrangements to it. Always exciting to enter the rehearsal room and find out where the songs take you. Songs from Damien, Wally, Declan, Danny, Dessie, Shane and Moore.
Just ordered tickets for your 2nd solo show in Ennis this year on 13 June. Looking forward to that. It’s almost 40 years ago that I heard you sing “Cunla dear don’t come any near to me….” First live concert at Irish Folkfestival in Zwolle (1983?)
Recently I was in renovated Vredenburg in Utrecht and suddenly remembered that you played there as well. The music keeps the spirit high!
Hope you have a wonderful 2020, keep the motor running 🙂
See you in Ennis!

Any mention of Templemore reminds me of a great old song I used to sing called “Morrissey & The Russian Sailor”…..I recorded it way back circa 1976 but it somehow fell from the set list….very happy to hear that Edward is enjoying “Chicago”…..

I always look forward to Limerick myself.. I really like that venue in “Chuck Feeney’s”….the proximity of the front row makes it personal… I like to walk the campus too, to walk the footbridge over to Plessy…..
the arrival of Motorway,Tunnel and UL prevents going into the city in recent times…I miss wandering around Limerick….The Treaty Cafe was a favourite place for travelling Bands , The Belltable was always a great gig with Bríd Dukes at the Helm…I used to visit the Hunt Museum, The White House, Thomond Park, St Clements Hall, Two Mile Inn,
played in The Parkway with Moving Hearts in 1981 and The Savoy with Planxty in 1972..back then the Savoy was the largest venue in Ireland,it held 4,300 and we filled it …Liam Óg’s pipes swirling around the rafters soothing sleeping bats, giving spiders palpitations….
Dear Sir, We have just heard thru our X-mas present from yesterday for the second time and would like to thak you for a wonderful record it is even if it not Magic Nights yet. Take care and have a good day. All the best from Norway.

Christy Ive a question, (or two). I’m a fan of your sound for many years, you and Dec are a big contribution to me learning guitar.
My Favourite album of yours is “Live at The Point”, the ’94 gig…
I remember many a moon ago seeing a DVD of yours of the gig. Is there anywhere i can get a copy of it? Ive checked everywhere for a long time online and offline, no better person to ask sure!
I wasn’t lucky enough to get tickets for Vicar Street in January, sure next time, please god !
Secondly, coming back to learning guitar, where would I pick up/buy tabs for your stuff?
I found some randoms on the internet but they aren’t the same.
All of that aside, you really are a National Treasure.

All the best for 2020,

well done Rebecca
enjoy your journey
The eastern sky was full of stars,
And one shone brighter than the rest,
The wise men came so stern and strict,
And brought the orders to evict.
Thinking of the human beings treated as though they were not human, at this time of year.
Happy Christmas i love you (all) baby.
