Hey Christy,
Being political here, nothing musical to speak of currently. I just want my Irish brothers and sisters and, not the EUsians, but the Europeans as well to know that all of us here in the USof A aren’t buying the crap that is coming out of the US. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9OJZOMEjOU&t=8s
Anyway, good luck now. And God Bless,
Greetings from down here, Christy. Barbara and I just listened to the new single, ‘Sail on Jimmy’ and it transported us back to the Tintean, Ballybunion in July. Magical evening. Many thanks.
Christy's reply
Sail on you love birds….greetings to Caisleaín Nua
Hi Christy, only discovering this forum now but i saw you there a few weeks ago in the Slieve Donard in Newcastle, absolutely brilliant. I missed the first half hour of the show unfortunately but was happy enough when I heard Ordinary Man! Any chance you’re coming back to Derry any time soon?
Good luck, Seamus

I practise it a lot but like you advised I still have the guitar in full swing.

Stephen Reas singing was pretty good. Its was an odd choice of song .Id imagine Its not an easy song to sing .
What did you think yourself?
This week the LA times had a headline “British Revenge Triller ‘Black ’47’ ups intensity with a Westren style turn”
Did they watch it at all?
Had to call for tea and toasted muffins and a couple of hard boiled eggs for the nerves.!!
When BruceS (69) calls again maybe ye could sing “Sail on Jimmy” together.

I am a big fan of Stephen Rea…we worked on a project together 40 years ago and ever since I have followed his work closely ..both on stage and screen..
I thought his delivery of “Johnny Murphy” was perfect from the character being portrayed, I thought the song a good choice..
….I think Black 47 is an important film, it brings certain truths, familiar to us, to an International audience…details of the “great” Starvation not usually made known around the world….it was not a famine, it was a genocide perpetrated by foul Colonialists….some of them still around today in Westminister…
Your quote from LA Times reminds me of a certain definition of the word “Analyse” … when broken down to Anal & Eyes it might be assumed that the analyst is looking up his own hole ( thanks Johnny Mack)…
I’m a bit embarrassed in asking for a translation of “Tá neart casadh san bóthar fós a mhac bán” ( but not too proud to ask !!!)…I do love the concept of adjusting the sail..
its all go here CS, gigging, practicing, rehearsing, arranging, covering, eating sleeping….hows the Bouzouki coming along ? make sure and keep the guitar going too…sometimes the box gets abandoned with the arrival of a bouzouki ….when I hear Denis Cahill and Steve Cooney I’m reminded of what the guitar can bring to our native music…not forgetting Mícheal Ó Domhnaill, Gerry O’Beirne,to mention but four…and now a deluge of great guitarists vamping the reels and jigs to “bate the band”…Im sometimes amazed when I hear so many brilliant young players these days..mainly on TG4….they dazzle and astound..also sometimes confuse and frustrate but we all gotta start somewhere…(feckin mad jealous as well if the truth be known, but I stifle that as best I can )
thats it for now… best to all the family… CM(73)
Christy Saw your concert last night I really enjoyed. Was waking up still singing. Keep it up.
And don’t forget Ballina we missed you this year.
Christy's reply
I have forwarded your Ballina reminder to the Logistics Department….played many Rooms on The Moy over the years….Downhill, Beleek, Georgian Room, Pearls and,in recent times, Great National which always reminds me of Aintree…..also played a large hall in the town once…a night of strange circumstance and bizarre out come…a night .thankfully, that no one will remember, apart from yours truly…..
PS…for all lovers of The Rod (& Jack Charlton)…The River Moy: rises in the Ox Mountains and meandering through Foxford and on to Ballina it flows some 64 miles before entering the sea at Killala Bay.

Well what a small world. Sat having a nifty sherry in my local in Shaw and strike a conversation with a couple at the bar. Turns out she is the daughter of Mavis and Jack Lee who ran the folk club at the Kingsway in Rochdale in the late 60’s. she had high praise for you from her memories of you and a fellow called John Downs. I love these incidences of chat where we shrink the world.
All the best to you and famil

Mighty gig in Lough Ryan last night……. can’t tell you how much we enjoyed it. Declan’s playing was awesome, maybe because it’s been a while since we’ve been at a gig with the two of you . . . . Tho every combination is special in it own right.
John Spillanes poem/song is magical and can hold a place in your sets whther as a spoken piece or as a song …. your delivery of it was sublime.
Great news re Pagan Ritual (sail on Jimmy) . . . . A real winner with every audience any time we’ve heard you sing it.
P.s. a great set list from last night , but there was also City of Chicago early on…. with a nod to the Donegal folks.
P.p.s We are still claiming Mick Blake …… and Rory Gallagher…. great to hear Rory’s Gone and to hear and see Mick join ye on stage for Oblivious.

John Spillane’s Ode to O’Carolan is a stand out piece… such a buzz to share it last night….duetting with Declan brings its own colour….it started 18 years ago purely by chance……we had not met for years when we bumped into each other at a cinema…

Hi Christy. We brought our two boys to your gig in Westport last year. They both came away with a plectrum each and they were delighted…. there was even a bit of a logistical issue getting the second plectrum out but you still ensured it got to our man…. thanks again for that. They’ll be at the Claremorris gig tonight, any chance you could play “My Little Honda 50” for Jamie and Luke?
Hi Christy
I wanted to book for Mullingar in February – on your gigs page it says you are playing on Friday 15th February but the hotel website seems to say that you are playing on both Friday and Saturday. Which is right?
Thanks
Madeleine
PS Have booked Tullamore already!

Thanks Madeline…I’ve passed your query on to the promoter who will get back with an update…greetings to all beneath The Black Mountain… we are currently camped here in Lovely Leitrim about to set out for The Plains of Mayo….we are working on a return to Béal Feirste…its time we travelled in your direction!!!
Derby day seems such a simple song superficially, but listening again to it on a temporarily quiet train there is so much to the lyric that a multi chaptered book could have sprung from its words. I just wondered if there was anything that you were aware of behind the writing of it Christy?
Looking forward to your trip to scotia’s shores.
Rory

Every line of Derby Day references different events witnessed or reported…most of them unrelated…I wrote the opening lines whilst staying in a hotel in Cashel…the Hotel was formerly the Bishop of Cashel’s residence….
When I was a boy Derby Day was always the day of the year in Newbridge…the Main road to the Curragh Races passed our door…the track a mere 3 miles away…The Grand Hotel was next door to us…all the “racing crowd” gathered there….Jimmy Eddery,TP Burns, Darky Prendergast, Charlie Weld, Prince Monolulu, The “Aggie Can”, Lester, Brud Fetherstonehaugh, Liam Ward, Gerry Cooney, Mickey Rogers,
We used to cycle up to the races , it was free entry on “the out side” where Mrs Lawlor had a huge marquee selling ale and sambos…I never made it into the saddling enclosure
PS. that particular purpose may be complete,..
now we gotta stick around until the first great-grandchild arrives….
no bother to us !!
Dear Christy,
Your music has been pleasing my days for a quite many years now, since Planxty when I was at high school to now… ‘t’s been a while.
As a fellow musician I am interested in gear… I have seen Taylors, here and there a Martin and is it a Washburn in the Journey video? but when and where you come to life–live, that is–it’s always Takamine. I’ve been mulling this question around for a long while and it might well be inappropriate (but then, I have no other means than this one and isn’t that the beauty and risk of a blog and a transparent artist as yourself). Why did you put black tape (and carefully done, come to that) on the logo of your Takas?
Thank you for the music and the poetry.
Christy's reply
for 2 reasons….
my 3 Taks were puchased over 30 ears ago…the quality of Taks ( in my opinion ) dis-improved about 20 years ago…
I found them very unhelpful when I was having pick-up problems. When they refused to help me I simply covered their logo
If anyone is considering a Tak, I always recommend that they seek an old second hand model….
I’ve never played a Washburn…at home my favourite guitar is an Atkin “forty three”…..over the years I’ve tried many different guitars on the road but always came back to my 35-year-old Taks and their 35 year-old pick-up systems… they suit my purpose, from finger pickin to thrashin..guitars are all down to personal taste…
for years I played old Yamaha FG 180s..really liked those.. over the years tried Martins, Gibsons, Harmony Soverigns,Taylors, Matons but never stuck with any of them
I just love the Atkin at home…… and the Taks at work
Greetings to Switzerland….good memories
