Hi Christy. I picked up the tickets for our annual family outing to see you in Vicar St in the presale. This year, myself and the brothers will be joined by our two sisters, so all 5 siblings will be together to see you on December 18th. Next year we’ll start working on the cousins. 🙂 See you in December. Ciarán.
Dear Christy, I trust you and yours are well. We are returned lately from a fantastic time at the Cambridge Folk Festival. There were many highlights too numerous to mention. (Let me mention Daiori Farrell, John Prine, Patti Smith, John Moreland …) One matter arose which I hope you won’t mind me bringing to your attention. Janis Ian, before singing her famous song At Seventeen, spoke of being on the outside looking in. And then finally coming to accept being on the outside as an ok place to be. Do you think as an artist there is some truth that the sense of not belonging or alienation from the status quo formed part of your journey? That in order to do what you wanted to do you had to be on the outside? Would you have stayed at the bank if you had felt part of that world? Would you have travelled and played music if you had had a sense of belonging? I hope you don’t mind the questions. Are we not all a bit quare? Best wishes to you and all the lads. I miss the buzz of the gigs. It’s been too long. And I promise to sycophant as much as I possibly can on every level. Xx
Christy's reply
“O he was a quare one
fol de dee get outa that
he was a quare one,
I’ll tell you”
we’re all the very same
in that we are all totally different,
even Boris and Donald,
two blond haired total twats
are entirely different
are any two artists the same in their insideoutness or outsideinness
Patti Smith and Janis Ian,two artists entirely different in every sense
in earlier decades I envied those inside certain cliques
today I see it all different…..feigned coolness eventually runs tepid
I hated my 3 years as a junior bank clerk….55 years on I realise it was not all bad
its all a mystery, where the muse resides, how the sweet notes are sourced, what colours to mix, the stroke of the brush, the chip of the chisel,
I hear the chords formed by Denis Cahill, by Steve Cooney, by Seamie Dowd, when they play behind a magical reel…its all a mystery to me…..analysis itself is beyond my reach
I just dont know Anuk….I have 13 chords 5 of which I seldom use…Keeping it Simple comes easy to me, suits me, ….others dont have it so easy, thats where the mystery and beauty is formed…
heard Janis Ian in Vicar Street a few years back…..beautiful
Hi Christy,
My Grandson is will be 5 when your Vicar st gigs come around, he’s mad about you. Would I be allowed to bring him or is there an age limit ?
Regards
Ray ( life long fan )
Christy's reply
its outside my remit Ray….its between Vicar St and The Law. of the Land ( itself a bit of a mystery !).I will enquire
I feel certain that you must have to trawl through endless communications from sycophants. People just wanting a bit of bragging material after the weekend, to share with their workmates & colleagues. That is definately not the reason for this at all. In fact, you have already provided me with more than i could have expected; the inspiration to dig really, really deep-far depeer than i thought I ever could- and give up the drink. I’ve been listening to music all of my life & i can’t honestly say that I haven’t been inspired before, but there is an honesty, a friendlieness, an actual person present in your lyrics, someone who is tangible, believable and basically good and I needed a friend to help me through. Your stories about your struggle with addiction rang true to me and undoubtedly formed the basis of my own fight and i thank you for that. I thank you for helping me to have my life back. Oh, and on another, moor cheery note, i have been wondering for a decade of two who the song Lawless is based on? The lyrics could describe both my own late father and his brother almost perfectly- Dun Laoghaire boys born before WWII….. both lived for the craic.
All the best to and to yours Christy, and thank you once more, from the bottom of my heart & eternally.
Christy's reply
I had to look up “sycophant”….dont know if I have encountered any..I tend to take people as I find them, seek the best in everyone….I do encounter the odd bore, ((looking in the mirror betimes) but I dont recall any “self seeking flatterers” …or maybe I just dont recognise them
“Lawless” , according to the author Mick Curry, was based on an amalgam of characters.I have met a number of people from Ringsend who told me that they knew Lawless well !!
Mick wrote another song called “Red Ronnie and Lousy Shoulders” which was based on two renowned men who walked the beat.
Came home for the match but saw the Pope too. Went to the “right-wing” rally at Croke Park last night and it was brilliant … Bocelli et al, and a girl from our town as lead dancer for Riverdance. Shane didn’t show so was disappointed. Went to Phoenix Park today and loved it also. I don’t think there is anyone who doesn’t abhor what has gone on in the Catholic Church, but I also don’t think that going to see the Pope is being supportive of these atrocities and the suffering they have caused. I was nearly going to hide out in Croker last night and sleep under the seats for a week as I have no ticket … anybody out there with a spare?
Christy's reply
I was trying to spot the snipers…. I wonder do the Pontiff have his own travelling snipers or were they provided by the State ?….
Celine Byrne ,who duetted with Bocelli,is a Lily White from the Parish of Caragh in County Kildare….
We were congretated in Bantry listening to Peader Ó Ríada ,Martin Hayes, Nellie Ní Chronáin at the annual Trad Festival…Thanks Be for such sacred diversion
not a ticket to be found but keep searchin, have you tried St Anthony…..Sail On Liz
hi christy, my name is Jessica and I’m 14 years old.
I was deeply upset by the finding of the 796 bodies in Tuam and wrote song regarding the issue. I believe that the song would really suit you, would you be interested in hearing the song?
Christy's reply
Hi Jessica,
If you wish, you could put the lyrics up here.
Its great that you have written such a song.
Thanks for sharing….
hi christy,
i have been listening to a good whack of aslan recently, and their youtube stuff always provides a few wonderful al fresco performances on the streets. do you have any thoughts of just turning up somewhere with the auld guitar and letting rip to an unsuspecting audience? i am sure that you will have done plenty in the past, but it is never too late to return to the roots and the pavements.
what about a duet with christy dignam for the pontiff on the tarmac at knock dodging the 747s and popemobile?
regards rory
Christy's reply
The Pontiff has plenty of chanters at his beck and call without the likes of me trying to extinguish his glowing thurible…
I am happy to say that we are as far away from this awful fleadh as its possible to be on this Island ( 240 miles) ….Christendom has changed since the last papal visit….they no longer (totally) get away with rape, abuse, lying, corruption and plunder….nor do they totally abhor, deny, cease to practice….still a safe house for paedophiles, such twisted faith…Strange Ways…Strange Ways
Hello Christy,
I was recently in Seoul with a friend when we stumbled upon a vinyl bar where we were greeted with your voice and ‘Back home in Derry’. As the night continued we listened to ‘Black is the Colour’, ‘Beeswing’, ‘Ride On’ and many other songs. The barman didn’t have much English but was evidently a big fan and I think he was delighted to have a small Irish audience with whom he could share your music. It was lovely to have a little bit of home when so far from Ireland. Thanks for the music Christy. Looking forward to hearing you in concert again soon. Clare from Kildoon, Co. Kildare.
Christy's reply
I trawled my memory to locate Kildoon, Co Kildare but could find no trace …So I surrendered and googled.. There I found you, lodged snugly between Nurney, Cutbush,Suncroft and Calverstown, place names familiar to me….I went to school with Tom Martin from Calverstown, I once mentioned Cutbush in song, Toss McCarthy hailed from Suncroft and was a shining light of my young life…..as a boy I thought that Urneys chocolate was made in Nurney…..would Kildoon be derived from Coill Dún…. not a million miles from Coill Dubh…
to hear that the songs resound in Seoul is heartwarming….I think of all those writers and the singers who have shared their songs….whose compositions have helped form this repertoire that continues to grow….
Just heard you for the first time and I would like to know if you are planning to come to Newcastle.
I can not go to Edinburgh during the week and you are sold out on all weekends.
Thank you
Nela
thanks for posting…this Rob man can surely sing and hes got a real good band behind/beside him…hope to catch them live sometime over in The Bog Smoke…this song says something that needs saying..I’ts a difficult one for many, myself included…I like the sound of distant bells …I like the daily ringing but, with every passing year, I get angrier at whats behind them…Rob says it well here…from Letterfrack to St Peter’s Square……

When Pope John Paul he came to Ireland
Way back in that holy time
Éamonn Casey and Michael Cleary
Served the mass and poured the wine
Two jockey boys, they’d ride for Ireland
While preaching us morality
Sure God love them, they’re only human
Annie Murphy might not agree
Fair play to Martin Egan for calling them out. And to you Christy for taking Martin’s words to the masses.
Geographically he was in Limbo
