I know yer gonna think the production is too thick here, but it is James after all. Glad to have gotten a song down which references home all the same… Hope all’s well, Dylan
Greetings from the autumnal Beara Peninsula to you, dear Christy!
During the last two weeks we enjoyed some beautiful sunny days, the full moon over Bantry Bay, colourful rainbows but also wind, drizzle, rain and fog. Very good to have the chance to use the friends’ PC – reading your Guestbook brightened up this dull day.
Some very interesting posts here about your recent concerts and special songs. So anticipation is growing … Will we maybe get to hear your new song “Rosalita and Jack Campbell” or even “Burning Times”??? Already looking forward very much to your gigs in the north-west – only 6 sleeps (as our Rose would say)!
Best wishes, Traudel & Horst

just tying it all down here…those two songs sound like a good idea to me….hope ye survive the big wind
Friday night and just about caught up with last sundays Rolling Wave programme., great to listen to John Reilly sing those songs and to hear yourself and Planxtys continuation of the long tradition. What songs they are ,songs that could have been lost to mists of time. First time I realized that Adieu to All Lovers was a forerunner to The Night Visiting Song that will always be Luke Kellys.
Also watched a short doc. film on Youtube on the traveller fiddler Mickey Doherty , he told of how the folklore in his clan handed down the story of how they were the musicians and whitesmiths (tinsmiths) to the O Donnell chieftains before the Flight of the Earls but they were left at the mercy of the English when the O Donnells ,O Neills and the MacGuires sailed out of Rathmullen and the Bards were scattered to the roads.
Great Interview on Ray D’Arcys radio show today with John Spillane aka The Hit Factory…. very complimentary on your version of Gortataggort…..I’m rambling now…. Bundoran awaits.
Christy's reply
good to read about The Doherty Clan here…..have heard a bit about Mickey, Simey and Johnny over the years..seen some footage and heard some of their music..
the stories of John are those of legend..if ever there was a travelling musician welcomed into manys the home..it was Johnny Doherty…
you are always welcome to “ramble” here Marty…I wish more would do it in this mad, busy world….years ago we”rambled ” after-hours in endless lock ins….
no more lock ins but I still like the odd ramble !
Im doing a presentation on ‘La Quinta Brigada’ to enlightentied a module on the feeling and rhetoric behind the the Irish Volunteers who fought against Franco and also the references to the other fella on the other side…
Any way you [or any of the followers out there!!] could point me in the direction of images, brief history of the actual lyrics and/ or other material that would give the songs presentation the due leg up it deserves!

Afternoon Christy
Great to see you are over in Manchester in May. A Sunday night? Could make Monday morning interesting. I was down at my Dad’s in Yarmouth a couple of weeks back. He’s 93 and not been too good lately so the 8 kids paid him a visit for a BBQ etc. Had a great sing song in the garden in the evening and dad was on good form. Then out of the blue he sings us a song called The Cha Ladies Ball’ never heard him sing it before and he knew all the words. Amazing. Music is magic and transcends all ages and afflictions. He still recalls fondly the message you sent him via these pages for his 90th Birthday.
Anyhow as long as O’Leary doesn’t balls it up for me I shall see you in Ratoath on the 11th.
All the best
Frankie
Christy's reply

Looking forward to Rathoat myself..used to visit there with my Grandad Jack Power in the 1950s..

Hi Christy,
Seamus noone here from Donegal
Been a while since I last was here, hope all is well with you.
I’m in the process of writing a song at the minute, called “Off to Lisdoonvarna in the morning”, and I was wondering, would it be OK if I used the Lisdoon, lisdoon, lisdoon, lisdoonvarna phrase?
Many thanks,
Seamus Noone.
Christy's reply

I can’t help but smiling when I’m listening to his songs and their great songs for a father and son to be singing together when driving somewhere in a car. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5BJXwNeKsQ

so he signed and took the soldiers crest
a decent man in battle dress
when bugles blow you do your best
for Sergeants and their men
