Christy, not to belabor upon your generous kindness by posting again on your site. But, as you very well know by now, I do not worship famous people. But – though I can not actually be so familiar as to call you my friend – I will use the word quite loosely and say to you, my friend, I hear you, and I may very well, before too long, join with you in your sobriety. Hey Christy ,
This is a big ask i know but as my old dearly departed Dad used to say ‘Don’t ask don’t get’ Any chance you can play Burning Times at your gig at the Waterfront in Belfast on 4 october ? It’s probably not one you do a lot but if you can it would be great. I’ve been a fan of yours for decades , I’ve seen you live dozens of times , from the Mean Fiddler to the Fleadh Festival , the Royal Albert Hall and loads of places in between , from the 80’s and beyond .
Anyway , I’m travelling from Aberdeen to Belfast to see you with my American wife . She has never seen you live but she’s been a fan of your music since she heard Burning Times . She’s a Wiccan and she tells me that song is particularly special for her and her kin .
No worries if you can’t as I know she’s so excited to finally see you live (something she never thought she would) but if you do feel like singing it , say a little hi to Ali from Florida .. society needs more folk like her , you know , those that worship this wonderful world of ours .
I just thought I’d ask ..
Christy's reply
Hey Happy, your Dad had the right idea…hope you and Ali have a good trip from Aberdeen….if all goes well beneath the Black Mountain, if the breeze is blowing over from the Bog Meadow, if its on the air I will try and sing Charlie Murphy’s song for Ali….Charlie came from California, I met him once in London…he liked my version of his song which came to me in a roundabout way…Roy Bailey recorded it many years ago in Nottingham, England….Martha McLelland heard his version in Derry..she sent it to my sister Terry in Kildare…..she passed it on to me and I started singing it straight away..such a powerful song……I got to sing it for Charlie at the Royal Festival Hall in London 5-6 years ago…. got to meet him and his partner afterwards and we passed the guitar around……Sad to say,Charlie died since, I remember him every time I sing his wonderful song…his spirit still resounds
referring to your relatives as “looking like pigs” darkened the humour of your perambulations….the way you quaff and enjoy your ale so thoroughly reminds me of a man I once knew…the gusto of your supping, the abandonment of worries and cares, the lonely laughter, the drunken gaze into the lens..it all reached me this morning… two thoughts to share with you….I hope you are well,….I am very glad to be sober
On September 1st 1992 in The Seven Oaks Hotel Carlow the first dance at our wedding was The Voyage. 25 years later, the boat is a bit battered, has weathered a few storms and some of the crew have grown up and sailed away. The boat is still getting us from A to B, we don’t ‘face any angry squalls’ we just go ‘gogo dancing’. We are heading to the gig in Carlow on Saturday to celebrate our 25th anniversary and would love if you could play The Voyage for us. Many thanks, Nicola and Peter

played in The Seven Oaks with Moving Hearts back in 1981..half way thru the first number the power went down…we played on acoustically,it was developing into an interesting intimate gig..we groped at our instruments as certain members of the audience groped each other…I read in The Carlow Nationalist that was quite a spike in the Carlow birthrate 9 months after that power failure…
something similar happened in The El Ruedo in 1978..when the lights came back on all the optics were empty
My husband and I just got back from visiting family in Clare, for the first time in 6 years. The last time we were in Ireland we saw you play in Carlow and it was fabulous. When we planned this summer’s trip, I told him that we couldn’t book the tickets until we were sure you were playing while we were there. To our delight, you added a few gigs during our stay in Ireland, and we got tickets right away. Well, we made it to the Black Box theatre in Galway on 17-8-2017 with lots of excitement. As if making it to the performance wasn’t already wonderful enough, you played my request of “Fairytale of New York.” I had regretted not requesting it years ago in Carlow and my poor husband had to hear me say it over the years…… Well, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your kindness! You made a special evening, unforgettable. I hope it won’t be so long, this time, until we get to see you again. Please come to play in NY! -Donna

Truth be known Donna,I simply love to sing Shane’s songs…be it Fairytale, Brown Eyes or Aisling, each of them evoke powerful images in the mind of the singer….the narrative of Fairytale is so vivid, the emotion of Brown Eyes catches me every time, the (almost psychedelic) imagery of Aisling buzzes me up when I (seldom) sing it…Only met the man a few times, dont really know him at all but I carry a deep love for the lyrics he has created, for the marriage made with Jem Finer’s tunes, for the wonderful groove carved by The Pogues during their finest hours….got to know Phil Chevron (R.I.P) and met Terry Woods along the way.. ( he gigs in Dublin soon with Pete Cummings ) Both played their part in Pogue history but Shane is “The Man who led The Van beneath the flag of green”

So we’ve flushed out this pipers name, surprising omission that he’s not named on a plaque to identify him; I used to wonder was it just ‘an uileann piper’ as in any uileann piper. I must look up some of the Toughy tracks.
(C, your album The Iron Behind the Velvet credits Larry Redigan, a N Y-based piper for one tune played by Noel HIll and co)
Christy's reply
I always love to hear musicians name the source of the various tunes…its a way of honouring those gone on before us, those who maintained the tradition during hard times….Liam O’Flynn never played a tune in Planxty without honouring the source, same with Matt Molloy, Mairtín Ó Connor, Noel Hill, Tony Linnane, Nollaig Casey, Cathal Hayden, Kevin Burke and others with whom I have played….in turn ,they too will be honoured in years to come by those who take up the baton and carry it on into the future..
The album you mention was recorded back in 1977…3 of the songs still feature occasionally…I have good memories of the time..we rehearsed in Coolcullen Co Carlow, high on The Castlecomer Plateu…did one tour with that band when we had a few good nights and a few close shaves….everyone on the album still making music except my good companero Jimmy Faulkner RIP (who can be heard playing on YouTube in many line-ups including, Hotfoot,Red Peters Band, Paul Brady Band, Finbar Furey, Mick Hanly,Kieran Halpin…Jimmy Faulkner was an exceptional Guitar Player and a good friend on the road…always remembered)
