Met your pal Andy Irvin that was cool do you think you guys would do anything together in the future? . Life is great and so is your music .graeme
Christy's reply
Good to hear from you. Thanks for feedback. I never say never, but its very unlikely that “you Guys” will do anything together in the future. Edinburgh is pencilled in for next April but not confirmed yet. Its good to hear that all is going well with you…
Hi Christy
Last week David Gilmore was here, what a gifted guitarplayer.
He played “Shine on you crazy diamond” and it was great, but it was not as beautiful as you did with Declan,Sheamie and Jim!?
Didn’t now you’re a Dylan fan to.
Don’t usually like it when people cover him but Make you feel my love by your brother is an exception.
Greetings and lots of Love?
Chris
Christy's reply
David Gilmore creates a beautiful sound when he plays….utterly distinctive, controlled and captivating…long may he Shine
Dear Christy, I hope you and yours had a fab trip over this side. The festival was very good and notwithstanding you and Decky, Seamie and Jimmy, I had some other highlights. Darlingside from Boston and the glorious Stick in the Wheel of Cockney Town were excellent. Me and the daughters of the Oven had a perfect few days bonding and plaiting the hair. The Farmer was outnumbered. Another question to ask if you don’t mind which may well fit in with my previous enquiry. Glen was on the night before you and during his set some lady shouted out ‘Glen I love you’. He replied (and I paraphrase) ‘Sure love is a strong word. You mean you’re a nice man who produces interesting work.’ Do you think the same Christy? If someone shouts out they love you is it that you doubt that it is love or is it just to complicated to believe that they actually do? Are the audience emotions real or is there some other dimension that we all go to? Anyhoo…..I hope you had a great gig and that you and everyone has the R and R so richly deserved. Thank you from me Mick Millie and Leela. xx

Such public declarations of love, expressed in the heat of a performance while standing in the middle of a marquee of 100 or 10,000 people should probably be receieved in that manner so aptly displayed by Glen Hansard at Cambridge …. who knows what brings it on…there could be a gallon of ale involved, it might be a cry for attention, maybe someone havin the bit of craic, it could be a desire to be heard on a “live album”, maybe someone trying to wind up their date…..sometimes I am tempted to reply “you love yourself” but I usually desist…..then again, its a lot better then some mush shoutin up “Christy,I fuckin hate you ye baldy bollix”
I believe that audience emotions are very real, I believe betimes we all go somewhere else in the course of a special gig..(some head for the bar)
so far so good, went to The Globe yesterday, then up, down and in around where the Sweet Thames flows softly….London is so full, seems like its bursting at the seams….just heard Sam Lee sing in Kensington…
I love Bob Dylan Songs, Bob Dylan Gigs, Bob Dylan Books, Radio Shows,Stories Myths,Legends….. but I dont know him
great to hear this again..used to listen to Doc way back…had two beautiful vinyl albums long since lent out never to return…had the great pleasure of meetn and playing with Him and his Son back in 1978 when Planxty and Doc did a concert in The Gaumont State Theatre. The concert was run by the legendary Kevin (Lofty) Flynn . After that gig we decided to reform and Planxty mark 2 set sail.
Hi Christy and thank you for a fantastic gig at Nell’s last Thursday. The three of you played so well together and it looked like you were having a good time – just as we were having in the audience.
I managed to take a photo with Declan after the show and thanked him for a lovely evening as well.
Hope your hand is better now, and that it wasn’t too serious?
Wishing you a great summer!
Christy's reply
My hand is healing Thank You. Glad you had a good trip.We had a good gig on Thursday.Loved that venue.
Thanks Christy, we’ve had a great festival, you are keeping it real, the songs of protest never needed so much. You were the best.
Up Mayo.
Christy's reply
my seventh visit since 1973 it was a great experience…..such a well run Festival…that said, my experience is gleaned entirely from the backstage and stage area….hopefully the standards out front are as highly maintained….Cambridge just seems to get better, which is not always the way with long running events…..
now its back to Mayo and the other 31
I’ve know Goatboy since we were garsúns growing up in Wealdstone, with a strong slug of green flowing through our veins. Amazed to read that you had even heard of Ballanagare never mind spent time in the area. My grandfather, Christy Caulfield was a big (in all senses of the word) fan of the music and his house was a regular stopping off point for musicians, singers and card players. I often heard him talk of a band called The Swanny Star band who used to practice in the kitchen, probably whilst a game of 25s was going on ‘down in the room’ and four kids (including my mum) were trying to sleep upstairs. It did them no harm.
Christy's reply
I’ll have to research “Th Swanny Star”, even the name itself provokes curiousity
Well, it has taken the building of a new theatre, but at last you will stop at Pontio, Bangor in October rather than pass by to the ferry :-). Not being optimistic but worth a try… my late soul mate used to sing Bogie’s Bonnie Bell a lot at singers circles/sessions. It would be emotional to hear it again. Chris (bach).xx
Great gig last night Christy. It’s many years since I’ve seen you play live and I have to say you’ve come on no end. The venue was just perfect and it was a privilege to see you and the guys up close and personal and thanks for finishing on such a crowd pleaser – I even saw Goatboy busting a few moves at the back to it.
I won’t leave it as long until the next time.
Christy's reply
Béal Átha na nGarr, is it yourself ? tell us a bit about the last time we met….how far back ? was it Roscommon or Mayo…maybe even Rakish Paddys in Lanesboro…are you and The Goatboy connected…maybe I’m gettin a bit personal here…Strokestown,Tulsk,Frenchpark…..there used to be a National Bank Sub-Office in Frenchpark…I did a few days Cashiering there back in 1964…a fellow threw a creamery cheque across the counter at me sayin “I want that pult”….. I left soon after
I was at Neil’s on Wednesday and Thursday. You were in good voice, and the understanding between you, Declan and Jimmy was spot on. I love how you stand up for immigrants, not by speaking but by telling their stories in songs. Those songs written decades ago tell the stories of the heartache and abuse and displacement that best immigrants today. You threaded together “In the city of Chicago” “Go move Shift” “Missing you” ” I Pity the Poor Immigrant” “Yellow triangle” “Metropolitan Avanue” . I love the way you stand up for the down trodden all over. And I have never seen such cheekiness as “The Weekend we spent in Amsterdam” I am lucky to live in the same era as you and that I have been able to hear you sing so many times over the years. I was overwhelmed at toimes, especially with “butterfly” and ” I pity the Poor Immigrant”….It is always a treasure that you sing “Sweet Thames Flow softly” when you are in London. Thank you Christy.
Christy's reply
we were in or element….it was like being back in the Half Moon, Putney, The George Robey in Finsbury Park, every one piled in close…
these are the songs that make me want to sing….It is a pure priviledge that good listeners gather together and create the air that allows us all to fly….
it began for me here in London back in 1966….all I ever wanted to do was sing, I never dreamt that such an amazing journey would unfold…..
I learned from those who went before….Hamish Imlach, Alex Cambell, Mike Waterson, Ian Manuel, Harry Boardman, Ewan MacColl, Tony Capstick, Al O’Donnell,Barney,Ciarán,Luke and Ronnie, Fred Jordan,Bert Lloyd, but also from many who still tread the boards..Donal Lunny,Andy Irvine,Johnny Moynihan, Archie Fisher, Wally Page, John Spillane….I name but a few of the stars who have shone in my firmament….Annie Briggs, Maeve Mulvanney, Rae Fisher,Margaret Barry,Sara Gray, Jacqui and Bridie,Jeannie Robertson, Jean Redpath,Dolores Keane,….I sat and listened to each and every one. All their notes and tunes and verses tumble round in this old head of mine ..

Thanks for your feedback Adrian…hope all is rosy in your Garden City
What can I say? Have seen you in 10-12 different venues over the last 34 years. Thursday night at Nells was undoubtedly the best yet .Not sure if its the Cod Liver Oil, the Fish Oil, the Glucosamine or the 90% pure cocaine….whatever it is keep on it….You were like a spring chicken up there with Dec and the Galway lad. even with the war wound and all!! Thanks for the call out to Ciara and Con. They were made up….Youre now Cons second favourite artist ever…behind Billy Joel. You made a dour grumpy old man very happy. For that I thank you !
Christy's reply
thats the kinda talk we need to hear….If it keeps up I may need to seek out a plámás filter for this device..in the meantime I love to get the bit of feedback partic when new generations are hookin up with the songs…always a buzz
tis neither glucose fish oil nor Columbian Marchin powders….tis strong long-brewed tea, a 50/50 blend of Barrys Classic Blend and Earl Grey..
(if at all poss it should be stewed in a billy-can over an open air or open hearth fire…not always poss in certain venues)
then we like to warm up by playing in the dressing room for 30 mins before we face the music…works well for us..when the the gig commences..we are continuing rather then starting
I’ll have to look into this Billy Joel lad…does his granny come from Kiltimagh?
keep in touch Goatboy..stop disappearing up the mountain..it’ll rot your teeth..us grumpy auld men must stick together
Christy I’ve been coming to your gigs for over 25 years and have enjoyed every one of them. I have to say though Wednesday nights gig at Nells was the best ever, thanks to you, Declan and Jimmy for a fantastic evening. It was brilliant to hear Burning Times, it’s a truly hypnotic song.

Hi Christy,
Totally awesome gig in Nell’s last night. Absolutely brill! I never thought I’d hear ‘Fairytale of New York’ in mid July 🙂 My thanks to all concerned. JackieH
Christy's reply
We recently had some listeners over from New York who requested the Shane/Jem classic around the Summer Equinox….Ive decided its too good a song to be limited to such a narrow time scale…thats fine for White Christmas or Daddy kissin Santa Claus….but Fairytale is about life and death, love and lonliness, its a song for all seasons….I was on Mr What. when he won The Grand National at 18/1 back in 1958…my Granny Ellie Power liked a flutter and we both had 2/6 each way with Dick Symes in Lucan…. I was too young for the drunk tank then but years after I qualified
Summer in Siam sounds fine on the shortest day of the year….Rainy Nights in Soho sounds good upon The Burren on the dry morning…..
Afternoon Christy.
having a catch up on the posts as hadn’t had much free time lately. I read of the joy and well being that you have brought to your audiences over the past few weeks and I wish I had been at everyone of those gigs. getting to grips with ‘Lily’ now. Always need to listen to an album a few times to get my head round it. Would have loved to have made it down to Cambridge this weekend but sadly redundancy has been looming the past few months and has been difficult to make plans. I hope it goes well for you and the lads and I will look out for highlights on the beeb even if I have to put the irritating Mark Radcliffe on sub-titles. I’m still playing the open mics and concentrating more on the traditional tunes now. I had a conversation last week with a guy at an open mic and I told him how I felt a little awkward playing ballards after someone just ripped out REM losing my Religion. He said that I should not underestimate how many people know the old tunes and enjoy them. It was very encouraging.
Any hows.
See you along the way
Frankie
Christy's reply
Hey Frankie…only one way to follow Metallica, REM or Radiohead,..get your softest sweetest most passionate old song and give it everythin you got…..sure,you’ll lose a lot of rockers and metal fiends but those who stay will become your friends , your long haul listeners…. I really like those 3 bands mentioned but none of them could follow John Reilly….their artics would not fit into The Square in Boyle and Bridie Grehan would be havin none of it
Just wanted to say thank you for a very enjoyable evening at Nells Jazz & Blues last night. The passion and energy you put into your music was both breath taking and inspiring. It was a joy to watch and listen to three musicians put there hearts and souls into their music. Wishing you all good things!
With much Respect

we lap it up like 3 young pups…that close in listening, “getting to know you ” closeness with the audience…I like the big concert venues, never aspired to achieving them, they too have their own dynamic and advantage but its nice to get close to the listener again…becomes almost conversational….with much respect to all you songsters and listeners….ye keep the ship afloat
Well Christy how’s it going? Still have LILY on repeat in the car. Great stuff altogether. Heard most of them live before it was released but haven’t gotten to a gig since. Did the same with folk tale and swore i wouldn’t make the same mistake twice. Do ya reckon a few new tunes will get a spin in vicar st or is it a completely different gig, charity night. I know the new songs don’t stay on the set forever. Either way looking forward to the next gig and most of all to seeing Waterford take Liam across the bridge in September.
Christy's reply
Sure thing Deise…we’ll open Lily in Vicar St on Sept 8th….we’ll cross the River Liffey Bridge, we’ll sail the Boundless Ocean away upon The Tide, across the Waterfalls we’ll flow and rush the rapids down below,we will seek to rise up with the sun knowing theres work to be done,
what a joy ‘twould be to see the Shanahans hold McCarthy aloft….across The Bridge, on down The Quay
Looking forward to Seeing you at Cambridge this weekend, and wondered if you would play ‘The Voyage’. It will be a year since my wife Carrie andI married and we played this at our wedding, it would be great to hear this.
Here’s to great weekend!
