In recent days,I’ve given a few spins to ‘King Puck’…what a brilliant record. Great singing, ensemble playing and rich production.
A gem

Christy's reply
I seldom get to spin the back catalogue
I regularly drop in on early Planxty Instrumental tracks
Liam to the fore , Donal & Andy weaving around the Piper’s swirl
myself very content to vamp or batter the rhythm
at the time I had no idea of just how good some of it was going to be
Planxty songs gained a lot of the attention
its the music that always calls me back
King Puck was recorded in Ballyvourney ,Co.West Cork.
It was a lonely time… Jimmy Faulkner fell ill and had to return to Dublin…the late Walter Samuel engineered in Crystal Palace colours….most days I used to visit Peader Ó Ríada above in Coolea….Neil MacColl came to the rescue and made his presence felt…
Travelling home last night I heard about the Bronze….hard to imagine Geoff Hurst out golfing with Trump
Christy, talk of the Continental Ceili and days gone by reminded of a (slightly dated) poem I wrote about 40 years ago so if you’ll kindly indulge me.
Out on the town
Out on the booze
Money in my pocket
And a shine on my shoes
Laid back style
Combed back hair
Standing there, in my posing gear.
Jump a bus, you can’t be late.
Meet the boys at half past eight.
Have a few then out the pub.
10:15 let’s hit the club.
It’s most midnight, getting late.
You’re on the lookout with your mate
Suddenly, there she stands.
The woman of your dreams.
The one in the mini, and the black stocking seams
Everyone stares, there all impressed.
With her well gelled hair and backless dress.
Should you ask her for a dance?
Well you’ve had few, so you take a chance.
You hit the floor, its the new Cure single
Her name is Denise, and she comes from the Dingle.
Her Dad’s on the dole.
She works in a store
And her mother buggered off with the fella next door.
Making polite conversation in between the motivation.
Getting down with Jimmy Brown & funking in Jamaica.
Next thing you know its half past one.
The D.J. puts the slowies on.
An end to all this conversation
Start mouth to mouth resusitation.
P.S. probably helps if read with a scouse (or John Cooper Clarke) accent, Lar.
Christy's reply
I need more precise direction John. (Lar ?)..
Scouse or John Cooper Clarke accent leaves me floundering around St Helen’s ..
feels more “Crack was 90” than “Continental Céilí”
In the NYC stadium today, there should be banners in many languages…
‘some rob you with a six gun
Some with a fountain pen’…
Thanks for the music context,Christy. And a fine description of Planxty duende.
