Today I was on the march for Palestine in Brussels. I really should reconsider my participation in this because I was confronted with my age today . it was hot, I was tired, at the end I lost control of my legs and stumbled straight in someone’s arms. So embarrassing…I have to find another way to support Palestine. I already buy a lot of Palestinian dates and no one in the family eats them, so I always have to bake datecakes. And now I’m going to soothe my sunburned skin.
Jayney Mac Christy! I have to say I enjoyed every word of your reply to Patsy and just got me thinking about what you say about “also working with The Trad Archive to hand over bits and pieces of a life’s singing” (And class to hear what’s happening with Claddagh)
There should also be a preservation order put on this very platform! A lot of the stuff discussed here over the years is priceless, I was reading it for years before I started posting. I sometimes trawl back to old stuff! A lot of it could be put into print as a memoir type of thing!? It’s hilarious, generous, entertaining, educational, essential, fascinating, humble, inclusive, shocking, non-judgemental, emotional, beautiful, thought-provoking, passionate, reminiscent, nostalgic, and never ever boring!
In the old world the saying was paper never refused ink! I don’t know what the new online equivalent is but it doesn’t happen here!
Hi Dave, here is something that may be of interest. It’s a time-lapse clip of the set up for one of Christy’s gigs at The Slieve Russell hotel on 13th April, 2019.. All shoulders to the wheel.. Recent gigs have had the impressive addition of large screens to enhance the visual experience for the audience. https://vimeo.com/1083294638
It’s got me tickling the bodhran myself. A lovely big one that Malachy Kearns sent me.

my old drum was made in Aotearoa…Donal Lunny gifted it me about 20 years ago, maybe longer…he met the maker up there, ordered two, one for himself and one for me..every time I play it I give thanks
Last night I was thinking of your home gathering…sadly,I’ve not been to one of your gigs in many a long day.
I’m curious about your stage set up these days. Tech stuff and screens…if there’s chance, pre gig,it would be brilliant if a crew member could take pics of the stage set up and stick them on your Gallery…greatly appreciated,if poss.
Enjoy the post gig buzz…

We’ll have a chat about that and see what we can do…..
Hi Christy,
Fantastic night in the Keadeen, a very receptive gaggle of locals gathered ….and the rest of us. There was a great sense of anticipation in the build up, and then you hit the ground running. The set up by the Crew created a really intimate atmosphere, which added to the occasion. Thanks for “ Boy in The Wild ”…. It’s a really special song.
Ride on.
Patsy
Christy's reply
Morra Patsy,
Thank you far calling out “Boy in The Wild”….Wally put his heart and soul into that one….his emotion and songwriting skill still resonating….his “Smoke and Strong Whiskey” has returned to the set ( after a call-out in Vicar St last December)….I’m now realising what a powerful and popular song it has become since the 1990 recording…
Playing in Keadeen last night was truly a “home” gig….when I was a boy in the 1950’s it was the “big house” in our neck of the woods….the housekeeper was a friend of my Mothers…the late Molly Hannon showed us PJ ( Darky)Prendergast’s Television back circa 1955…it was the first TV in Newbridge, seeing it was like witnessing an apparition or a moving statue…PJ was the Aiden O’Brien of the day..the main man in “flat-racing”, he was the leading Irish trainer….I recall many of the jockeys who worked with him back then, Liam Ward, Jimmy Eddery, Garnet Bougoure, also Lester Piggott and Scobie Breasley…….
My brother Andy was in the front row and sang every song word for word with me…he came up from Cork for the home gig….
also in the front row were the writers of “Darkness Before Dawn ” and “Weekend in Amsterdam” two great songs written Pete Kavanagh from Naas and Paul McCormack from Páirc Mhuire in Newbridge… what a pleasure it was to sing their songs and shake their hands…
I spent the first 16 years of my life in Moorefield…back then Keadeen was surrounded by green fields..Ballymany was home to many old neighbours, Morgans, Tidds and Fogarty’s. The Crescent, Hanly’s Jungle, Lawlor’s of The Forge, Dr Rowantree’s, Floods, Artillery Place,The Protestant Church, ( a mortal sin to go beyond the gate !!!)….I was transported back there last night….great memories of old friends loomed large, Johnny Flood, Lou O’Brien, Tommy & Bee Coyle,….part of me still runs thru the fields, cycles to The Curragh Plains, The Pollardstown Fen, Donnolly’s Hollow, auld pals, old flames,
enough of that….there’s serious work to be done…Claddagh want to release an extended version of “A Terrible Beauty”…I’m recording some additional tracks for that purpose..also working with The Trad Archive to hand over bits and pieces of a life’s singing….there’s talk of a TV Doc about the process…
after last nights home run its back to the National Concert Hall this week, then on to Cavan & Derry….
” I am a rovin Hackler Lad that loves the Shamrock Shore”
Great gig tonight Christy- thanks – you had the crowd going from the very start
Delighted to be able to give you a dig out for the last verse of the Weekend we spent in Amsterdam
Always a pleasure
Thanks

There’s a great wee cafe right at the top of Baildon Moor…we would look after you and it would be a great mini gig in a beautiful location…If not a gig, come up for a cuppa.Cafe run by a Mayo man ..and I’m from Dungannon…something a bit different??
Christy's reply

there will be people there for all the real Timahoes…here’s hoping we can all sit together in peace…we all came out of the same auld bog… we snagged the same turnips..we dined on chopped straws and buttermilk when times were hard , sheep’s eyes and mashed mangles when thinks improved…
all Laois listeners will be made welcome into Moorefield tonight, around you will be many long haul listeners from Scotland, England, Germany, USA and Newfoundland, Romanis, South Africa..them being the ones I know about… from Sarsfields,Tralee,Wexford , Barronstown, Naas, Donegal, Sligo, Palmerstown, Doolin..
its a special one for me tonight, my first gig as an 80 year old…back in my home place where I have not played for over 10 years…the house we grew up in is still there, half a mile from where we grew up in 3 Moorefield Terrace..
Have a good none Roghan..I’ll give it all I’ve got
Morning, and thanks, Christy, for further filling in our Irish family puzzle. That makes sense since our records went only as far as your grandpa’s first wife, Ellen. Turns out, around the time that CSM and Brigid were married, his niece, Kitty Moore – Margaret (Geoghegan) and William Moore’s daughter – my grandma, was coming to British Columbia, Canada, escorting her recently-married sister, Mary (aka Mollie). Kitty didn’t originally intend to stay in the Pacific Northwest, but she met my German grandpa, Paul, there and love won the day. They married in 1923 and lived in Bellingham, Washington (USA) for the remainder of their lives. Kitty and Paul had three kids – two girls and a boy (my dad, also Paul) – two of which married and had their own children. All in all, you have 6 second cousins (once removed?), including m’self, in Washington State with the ol’ Athlone Moore blood coursing through our veins (and sometimes our brains!). Anywho, break a leg in Newbridge tonight. Hope the gig’s as good as last week’s show at the NCH in Dublin. Best, Karl
Yeah, thanks Rory, that’s a lovely piece of work there from Matt. Breaking the silence is also, of course, the name of the Israeli organisation that publishes testimony from ex-IDF soldiers.
I would like to thank Rory for sharing Matt McGinn’s song. It is so sad and it is getting worser by the day. Sunday a new march in Brussels, I will be there.
Heading over from Glasgow in the morning. 7th year on the trot we’ve been over to see you. I thought we were doing well until I seen 150th time below me. That is incredible, congratulations. I reckon we will be about 20 all in when including Scottish gigs. Looking forward to spending some time in Kildare and surrounding areas. Can’t wait for the show.
Frank & Michelle
Hi folks
In a week of such celebration of birthdays, white smoke and VE , please take 3 minutes to watch and share Matt McGinn’s song of a Birth Day that became unspeakable.
I just worked out that the Keadeen gig will be the 150th time I’ve seen you live. I know that’s just a drop in the ocean for some of the listeners here. But how fitting to see you in your home town…Can’t wait!
