Not being on the phaicebuke meself Christy I can’t see the comments, so the only piper I can recognise is the man himself! Isn’t the tune Rakish Paddy that follows Bean Phaidin from “The Well”, and I think the lorry is a Bedford!?
Just had a great chat with Ray from ‘ Mancunian Irish ‘ at the Irish Village that’s rocking St Ann’s Square….last year,I rambled on about the mosaic trail that was in the city centre….it featured celebrated Irish cultural and political figures. Interesting news that discussions with powers that be are going well and looking good for the trail to be in Dublin this year…it’s a real treat and worth watching out for breaking news about it’s arrival
heavens above..the porter head on that fella….slaughterin large bottles to bate the band…he’s drink it off a sore leg…
thank god we’re no longer fond of it..’tis a hoor when it gets in on you
Since that night ,in the Abbey Tavern adout in Howth , 47 years ago, I’ve sung it maybe 10 times…its one I sing to myself here in the workroom…. theres another one called “Patrick’s Arrival” which I consider a really good song..found the lyric on an old broadsheet and tried it to the of “The Night Before Larry was stretched”…its on an album called “The Iron Behind The Velvet”…..I’d love to sing it again on stage but I’ve a feeling the audience might get restless at the length of it
” was it the length of it “….”No”
” was it the size of it “……”No”
” was it the weight of it….”No”
” was it the colour of it…”No”
Yerra Christy, a choice between gigging or writing? I’ll go for the gigging, the ‘book of life’ you are creating with every gig and post in your guestbook. May the gigging never end ..
Hilary, thanks for the reminder re Liam Óg. My greatest experience of his playing was when Shaun Davey’s ‘The Brendan Voyage’ was premiered at the Inter Celtic Festival in Lorient, early 80s. A full symphony orchestra and Liam, before a rapturous crowd of about 30000. And when the pipes kicked in over the swell of the orchestra, what a sound!
Hi. For several years I was lucky enough to see and hear Liam Og O Flynn at the NCH at Paddys weekend. He left us 7 years ago this week but what a legacy he has left, what a contribution he made, globally. https://youtu.be/T_3owszQ82U?si=Gh3Bz8POlLZoI8C3 Beir bua agus beannacht H
Dear Christy, last night I saw the movie “I’m still here”, a moving film about the impact on the family of the disappearance in 1971 of Rubens Paiva , Brazilian, husband , and father of 5 children. At the time I knew about disappearances in Chile and Argentina but I did not know it also happened in Brazil.
I just finished reading the book “the Nakba, the ethnic claensing of Palestine.” by Ilan Pappe. Pappe, a Jewish historian, shows bluntly that the zionists were guilty of ethnic cleansings. About a million people were displaced from their homes, fell victim to mass murder and hundreds of villages were destroyed. Israel is built on the ruïnes of Palestine. And just like now, the international community knew about the crimes, but deliberately did not intervene. This book should be read by everyone to understand.
I, myself, search but I can’t find an answer on the question of how people can do such horrible things, again and again.
After all I’ll try to stay positive
I wish you and everyone here a happy saint Patricksday

Well Christy, you never cease to amaze me, and so many others, based on all the wonderful posts here.
As I read your response to Dave, with your trip around the clubs and pubs of England where you performed, two things struck me.
Your phenomenal memory. I am a couple of years younger than you, but can hardly remember the name of places I was last year!
And secondly, there is a great book wandering around your head, with all those great venues and people who ran them. Devotion to the folk scene…..
So many people would love to read about those great days, and Barney’s comment would be the name of it ..
‘Theres a great stretch in the evenings right enough!’
Christy's reply
truth be told Pat, I have so much work to do keeping the set lively, in tune, updated, refreshed, interesting, plus I gotta do some daily excercise, stretching, , gotta practice my few chords daily, keep the fingers nimble, the rhythm arm supple and flailsome…..the odd bit of writing I do here is about my limit….
when the last gig is done , whenever that might be, maybe then there might be another book…the last one “One Voice” was written at a time when I was off the road and unable to gig
Hello Christy,
Well I finally tracked down Arty McGlynn’s Botera, the rascal took some finding. Had a listen. I was straight back in the early 70s. Tales of the Unexpected, an episode of Columbo at a posh party, Pink panther with inspector Clouseau. It’s a fabulous soundscape they’ve created. Thankyou for recommending it.
I’ve also been listening to a couple of Paddy Keenan albums. His slows airs on the pipes or low whistle are glorious. What a sound the man makes. https://youtu.be/UNKP_TG8owI?si=8NI0iNzSU7q1xxtj
Awesome show last night! Hope you can use the hat and scarf! The animal on it is a moose which although not native to NL is plentiful there. The last song you did last night was written by Ron Hynes, a native Newfoundlander and made our night! We sang our hearts out ❤️
Christy's reply
Black & Amber…Thank you

lovely man…great song
I recorded it here 40 years ago and many have covered it
Ron’s song is now in our national repertoire…which really tickled his fancy
Ah Dagrab, God be with the days of “Folk on Two” with the great Jim Lloyd. We only got it on fuzzy medium wave. Now it’s all online. Must go looking and once more tune in.

Looking forward to the gig tonight Christy, booked on the back of the Vicars Street gig in November, was lucky to secure enough tickets for the Scottish crew to come over to celebrate the big 50, not the Barrowlands but close enough! Be great to hear the songs that have been the soundtrack to my last twenty years!

Listening to BBC radio 2 last night…The Folk Show had a fab piece…
Released tomorrow…’Fire and Dust’…a Woody Guthrie song cycle…by Reg Meuross…idea and production by Pete Townshend…Both are long time admirers of Woody and the idea for the project suggested by PT after the research by Tim Hernandez…to identify the passengers in the Los Gatos plane crash (Deportees ) not just the crew.
Great interviews with both guys and songs played…’Red Shoes’ is a very poignant song, brilliantly written and performed…the pilot’s pregnant wife was a last minute recruit,to help on the flight. Her red shoes found in the wreckage ..
Hi Christy, I ticked seeing you live off my bucket list last Friday and it was even better than I imagined. My husband loved it too, especially the beautiful Boy in the Wild, as we have sons. My parents went to see you in the Point when I was a kid and I remember well being so jealous but happy for them. I had tickets to see you at a gig that was cancelled because of COVID, so I am so grateful to have finally got to see you and hope I will again. Here’s what I said about you on Instagram – seeing you don’t have it (good for you!)
Ordinary Man, he is not. He’s a poet, a seanchai, a political activist, a voice for those without one, a musical talent like no other; a living legend. I didn’t expect tonight to be as moving as it was. He honoured “Warrior Woman, Veronica (Guerin)” and Palestine. He took on toxic masculinity with his battle cry for men to stand up and cry, and he changed the old *R* chant to celebrate Mná na hEireann. He sang about old loves, lost loves, fathers and sons, Honda 50’s, and abuse by members of the Clergy. I thought I was going to pay homage to part of the soundtrack to my early years, and I did, and it was so much more than that.
Christy hi
I was at Damo’s gig in Glasgow last night, he is a force of nature.
Played Colony, james mclean and almighty love amongst other stand outs….the man wears his heart on his sleeve.

Christy, what can I say?
Absolutely fab night in Killashee on Friday night – I’m just jealous of everyone who gets to enjoy you this Friday night. They’re in for a real treat.
I’ve loved every time I’ve heard you over the decades but there’s always something special about hearing you at home – you thrive on it and so does the audience.
And my Armagh friend wishes she was from Newbridge🤣.
Also, you have an amazing team around you. Paddy, Hilary, Mick and all the others – you all create such a lovely atmosphere of kindness and welcome. A special thanks to Paddy.
And my Dad, Oliver, was delighted to reminisce with you and be a groupie in the front row.
Wishing you many more amazing gigs
Tina
Young Damo Dempsey treated us to a great night of music in the Pool last night Christy. He paid tribute to both Sinead O’Conner & Shane McGowan. Highlite of the night was a great version of Rainy Night In Soho. Keep her lit, John
