I’ve Radio One’s ‘Arena’ on here listening to Donal and Andy talking about the Planxty release of the boxed set; brilliant.
I see a great rundown of the pubs of Newbridge is in-progress.
I’d seen that a new documentary going out on the Rillington Place murder. Ballisodare Folk Festival, either ’78 or ’79, a Saturday afternoon gig, around 4pm, Christy solo, that track got a great airing that afternooon and I think ‘Saco and Venzetti’ got aired on the same gig; I got hooked there and then.
Christy's reply
Ewan MacColl and Woody Guthrie gave us “Tim Evans” and “Sacco & Vanzetti”…..they provided manys the fledgeling folk singer with songs to sing, inspired many to try their hand at writing….
Have not yet heard the Arena interview..
Ballisodare Festivals were stand out events, particularly the earlier ones…..Kevin Flynn (Lofty) had the vision to pull it all together. He inspired his cohorts and together they provided us with some great memories of that plain Sligo Field.
In 1963 the Odeon in Newbridge had the film PT 109 on, a film about JFK, in Nov JFK was shot in Dallas, was it Paddy Kane who did it… Kildare played Kerry in St, Conleths and I had me autograph book at the ready, and got lots of names, J.Culloty, S Og Sheehy,Kevin Coffey also Pa Connolly, Toss McCarthy, P.Loughlin, great times.

Hi Christy,
Hope your keeping well. Out of interest, which song were you trying? – “wrestled with a major Dylan song recently, spent weeks with it but all to no avail”
Two weeks ago in a shopping center here in China, in a small side room they showed a Dylan documentary to celebrate his Nobel win. It was in English with Chinese subtitles. The event was advertised on a piece of paper stuck to the front of a Dylan book in the bookshop in the shopping center. A good crowd of 12 huddled in to see the documentary.
Christy's reply
there are certain things we do not wish to talk about….
I was in China Town myself today….pulled into Paddy Duffys for 20 major and The Leinster Leader and decided to have a wee ramble around Chinatown…not a word about Bob Dylan…no sign of Reggie Mooney

played it the first night in Sneem but not on the return…that was the only time since the 70s when I used to love playing it with Jimmy Faulkner who always played lovely slide guitar licks on that old Sigerson Clifford ballad…I learned it from Michael Hipkiss….that beautiful Cork singer long since domiciled in Birmingham…..
another beautiful song from Sigerson is “The Tinker’s red haired daughter Mary Anne” which I took on many years ago but never settled down with it….there was one aspect to the lyric which simply does not ring true……the song also referenced Lyracrompane..has there ever been a more beautiful sounding place name ?….Knocknagoshel, Sneem,Pettigo, Snámh, Snugboro, also spring to mind….Yellow Furze, Cratloe, Coneyburrow and , needless to say, Newtownmountkennedy

I have my mother’s 60th birthday party in cons on the 9th and the rules with the locals is, ya have to play 3 songs!! So for the night there is one song that is on my mind for a long time now ever since some one around here requested it for the last barrowland gig is aisling… I known the song for years but over the last few weeks I’ve fallen in love with the song and I’ve it ready to give it a spin in cons that night!! As there is a 3 songs rule I’ll definitely do Lisdoon and either north and south, bright blue rose or the voyage. I’ll see on the night and how the crowd feel, ya never know I might get an encore and do 5 songs!!. I’m sure the mother will want to sing paper roses at some Stage!!
For me I have to practice a song over and over again and there is only a hand full of songs I’d be happy sing on any night, as I know them but the other songs need practice. Would you constantly practice songs at home?? For the likes of a strange request, like a song from 30 years ago??
I remember years ago in the arch bar a young son of sarsfields sat down and played continental ceili and there was a accordion player called paddy McCormack(rip) joined in and it was epic!! Something I’ve never witnessed since, brilliant.. yet if I tried to play it now I’ll be all over the shop!

“In That Little Old Engine Room” is one of my favourite songs of all time…Peter Byrne (my brother-in-Law) and Conor Mahoney do a lovely cover of it on their debut album “Land+Sea”…looking forward to hearing them both on Dublin City FM……..whats next up at Punchbowl Lar ?..thanks for a great night there a few weeks back….
Yeah Christy CJ s was a great spot, back then most of the niteclubs were in Salthill now there all in City centre I started going to see you there around mid 80s played support to you in 89 shortly after Neilus gave us the start in the bar at the front sure is was great so many acts played there and then disco after.I was there one night during one song someone dropped a full tray of drink must have loaded up as the bar was closing your response was I feel your pain
I still slag the O Connors that they still have your torch from the night the power went out
Got my paws on Planxty Retrospective…wow! Can’t comment on the DVD because my player is kaput, but the CD is superb….credit to all players and those involved with the project.
I was lucky to see various incarnations of the band on a variety of gigs around Manchester ,in the 70s mainly. The sound textures were mighty from the start and brilliantly relayed to the audience by a high quality, well mixed PA …way, ahead of its time for acoustic musicians.Geek that I am,if there’s any info about the tech aspects of the sound ,it’d be good to know. There was so much skilful music being played,it s good to recall the ‘live’ clarity and revisit wonderful times.
Hearing Planxty again puts a smile on the mug….not often that’s happened recently….thanks!
Hi Christy hope all is well with you I hope you have a great gig on Saturday night won’t be able to make it this time we will actually be down the road in the Ardilaun for a wedding I met Benny O Connor during our summer season in O Connors and he said he had a rubgy booklet for you not sure if he caught up with you Anyway have a good one Saturday night

Was’nt CJ’s in the 80s& 90s a great venue….rem the night the 2 Spaniards stormed out shouting “Franco ! Franco!” during Quinte Brigada
and the stormy night the lights went out for a full hour and everyone was disappointed when the power came…..(particularliy the couple in the quiet corner practicin for their honeymoon..I think Neilus sprinkled holy water on them)
Well done with that lovely song Sean Keane sang yesterday on Sean O’Rourke’s programme…I did’nt realise that you wrote it
Heya CM,
Have been speechless since the 9th… It is a very hard and scary time at the moment and am fighting the desire to crawl under a rock for the next 4 years. Am still giving serious thought to leaving. I don’t know. It is too much to think about at the moment.. however a dear friend has sent, per my request a copy of “Between The Jigs…” to wash the current state of affairs out of my head for a little while… Stalking the mailman…..will see what happens.
Sing on.. need to think of pleasant things…..
Christy's reply
looking back over 2016 “speechless” sounds blissful……angry speechifying has exposed a lot of ugly reaction …..so much hate in the air that sometimes its hard to breathe… but then there comes a wind of hope….the sky clears and rays of low winter sun shine their light upon the beauty of creation….moments of bliss to be cherished between rising tides….
The man of March, he sees the spring …
Happy to confirm that Uwe and I will come to Ireland next March for your concerts in Carrickmacross and Tullamore, dear Christy. Just have to get through December, January and February …
Lots of love from Hamburg.

Greetings to you both….let us hope we all make it thru the Winter Months without falling through the Ice….its time to hibernate BUT we have gigs to do…Thanks Be

I still slag the O Connors that they still have your torch from the night the power went out
Hi Christy
Hope all well.
Dave
Hi Christy hope all is well with you I hope you have a great gig on Saturday night won’t be able to make it this time we will actually be down the road in the Ardilaun for a wedding I met Benny O Connor during our summer season in O Connors and he said he had a rubgy booklet for you not sure if he caught up with you Anyway have a good one Saturday night
Face the puck out
Was’nt CJ’s in the 80s& 90s a great venue….rem the night the 2 Spaniards stormed out shouting “Franco !
Sing on.. need to think of pleasant things…..
looking back over 2016 “speechless” sounds blissful……angry speechifying has exposed a lot of ugly reaction …..so much hate in the air that sometimes its hard to breathe… but then there comes a wind of hope….the sky clears and rays of low winter sun shine their light upon the beauty of creation….moments of bliss to be cherished between rising tides….
