Loved the link–Thank you!!! All disturbing, but can’t touch poking a baby with a pin and holding a basin for the blood to drip in…..Long Lankin is still spookiest in my book!!!!!
Yes, we are all terrified here…if things go south, may be emigrating….
Seriously.
Hello Christy, it’s been a while and I hope this finds you well, as we all are. I was just having a read of the guestbook and your recent response to Aoife. It brought back memories of driving from Two Mile House to Naas and about with my Dad driving the car and giving me a running commentary of how he used to make the journey on his bike everyday as a young lad. Thanks for reminding me. Hope to see you again one of these days. Love from all of us.
Christy's reply
Aoife got sorted..a couple of cancellations arrived….
Hello Christy I hope you’re well and enjoying yourself. Recently we went to see the Saw Doctors at Nell’s (where you were of recent times) and then we went to see Damo at the Albert Hall. Both were incredibly diverse events but both filled with some energy. I had seen the Saw Doctors when I was young (there’s a whole story attached to that!) so 30 years passed before I saw them again. The noise was huge. They were very enthusiastic and played all the favourite songs. It was like a good time was had by all. Damo at the Elgar Room within the Albert Hall was completely different. I liked the way he avoided mention of all things ‘royal’. There was power but more of a bristling anti hero sound which left me feeling ever so slightly scared but exalted. Bit like when you go to mass. Live music is a great thing. Take good care. xx
Christy's reply
My first experience of The Doctors was at the launch of their first single in Galway many noons ago….great excitement around their current reformation…..first met Damo when he was a student at Ballyfermot Rock School, I was invited to do a workshop….Nell’s would get my vote over The Albert Hall every time when it comes to choosing a venue…..preparing for a few Solo gigs here…always a challenge…
Hiya CM,
Was back on the radio yesterday after long away…just a one off to fill in. Had a great time with Halloween….played “Reel in the Flickering Light” and “Weeila Walia” among many others… Mary Black with “Crow On the Cradle”, some Steeleye Span and Pentangle for the great gory Child ballads.. and the scariest song ever–Martin Carthy’s version of “Long Lankin”. Good to be back in harness….
Happy trails with the gigs….
Sorry Christie.
I gave the wrong date for the funeral.
It’s on Monday 7th at Radcliffe Crematorium.
I know you can’t attend but would you like me to pass on your condolences to Gill and the family.
Sorry for the mixup but I’m not functioning very well at the moment.
Sad News, Christy.
Another Beggarman has gone.
Norman, the mouth organ player, died last Thursday after a long illness. Tony and I were lucky enough to visit him recently.
Funeral is on Friday.

really enjoyed David Kenny singing “El Paso” in the Taxi a while back ( “Up The Town” sez The Driver)…he gets a good sound out of his Tak and gotta a real good voice….you have a very busy life there managing David as well as exclusive agency for Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, Damien Dempsey etc etc…you have a bigger stable then Aiden O’Brien below in Ballydoyle..good luck to David and yourself..hope to hear him live sometime..re the “grapevine”..the only thing I got next tue is a visit to the dentist
Well Christy. Just finished the new DVD there. Dusted down the prosperous album earlier after reading Leagues piece on the inlay. I can only imagine the buzz around the folk scene back then. All the best with the release.
.We’ll be in good voice liffeyside next weekend.

happy times in ’71,’72….we were footloose and fancy free….very different world back then…
but ( for me) the gigs are just as enjoyable these days… I do appreciate them a lot more now…being 45 years closer to the finishing line every gig is more precious to me..
preparing for a return to Solo gigs next week..a very different discipline to the work in recent years..What better place to start then in “The Barracks” opposite Coffey’s Clock
Just a note to say how much I enjoyed watching Journey again, this time with the extras. Seeing the warmth and camaraderie between you and the team backstage and on the road is such a lovely thing. Apart from your own insights, I thought Declan in particular spoke very insightfully about the journey and the experience. His disagreement with the director’s proposition as to whether gigging might be an addiction, disagreeing because of the negative connotations that “addiction” carries, but concluding “But I’d never give it up” was 100% on the button in painting the experience as bringing a sense of fulfilment and purpose. Enjoying the Planxty reverie too, getting transported by Little Musgrave is always such a treat. xx

its all happening Liv…DVDs and CDs to bate the Band…..hope all is good in Ros..busy as a Bee here preparing for some solo slots..going to hear Peader Ó Ríada’s new suite in the NCH tonight..saw Ken Loach’s chilling new film “I,Daniel Blake”..his first since Jimmy’s Hall…also saw “Young Offender’s” and enjoyed it thoroughly….keep coming back !

Brian, as a young lad I knew every house and family on “The Crescent” Bells, Barrys,Cuddys,Scanlons,Fitpatricks, Geraghtys,Wilmots,to name but a few…if I’m on the right track I remember 3 members of the Barry Family….Kevin used to take part in the “panto” as did his sister who was a very fine singer….also remember Joe from the old Moorefield Club room….we used to play Poker, Billiards and Snooker there under the mindful eyes of Josie Dempsey and Tommy Behan Snr (Skinner)….I have noted “Victor”for Dec 19th and, if all goes well, we’ll give it a spin
Hey Christy,
I’m not looking for anything back here, and by that I mean, acknowledgement or suck up, or any obligated thanks ect. Ok, agreed, no one will not accept a appreciated thanks. But that is not the intent of this post. I am just thanking you for the email letting me know about the new Planxty release.
Sadly, I don’t have much money these days to play with, and yes, I want your new album also Christy. But, this new Planxty album I just had to order right away. I had to have it and I am glad the Planxty lads will get the funds.
Christy's reply
I hope you enjoy the CD/DVD…it has been carefully curated by Universal…the band were consulted at every stage of the process… Stan Roche went to great lengths to achieve the project..it is indeed rare for Record Companies to take such care when assembling compilation albums….
The “Planxty lads” will be very grateful for whatever trickles down….the proceeds of your purchase must pass through many counting houses (becoming greatly diminished!) before reaching the musicians..
That said, I am thrilled by this release, delighted that we have another album to celebrate. Whilst any royalties gained will be very welcome, it’s the music that has always mattered most to “The Planxty Lads”.
Here is the first review. (From Siobhán Long of The Irish Times)
The boys are back. This CD/DVD is a timely reminder, 44 years after their debut, of the revolutionary musical imaginations that fuelled Planxty’s music and shaped so much of what has happened since then in the world of traditional music.
Liam Ó Floinn’s piping in the beautiful opener, True Love Knows No Season, as it weaves in between Andy Irvine’s sinuous harmonica (laden with dustbowl influences), will send a shiver down the spinal column of the most nonchalant listener.
Between the Jigs and the Reels is a lesson in evolutionary musical biology, with Christy Moore still feeling out his own voice on the early recording of Follow Me Up to Carlow. His reading owes more to the balladeering tradition of The Dubliners than it does to his later incarnation, which was (mercifully) devoid of the earnest troubadour of this early rendition. The incantatory rhythms of Dónal Lunny’s bouzouki and the delicately picked melody lines of Irvine’s mandolin are equally breathtaking.
There is a healthy balance between the show-stoppers (Little Musgrave) and the infinite complexities of the tunes (Baneasa’s Green Glade), with plenty of space in between to make room for every listener.
The gargantuan DVD, bursting with outtakes from a slew of RTÉ recordings, is a treasure trove, with complementary versions of seminal recordings that will have ally self-respecting trad anoraks comparing and contrasting album and DVD for months.
The precision-engineered punctuation of Ó Floinn’s pipes defines the melody line of Sí Beag Sí Mór, another reminder of just how pivotal he was in placing the pipes front and centre, after decades in the doldrums.
Between the Jigs and the Reels is also striking for the riches of Planxty’s ensemble contributions: all multi-instrumentalists, with three vocalists rambling from the west coast of Clare to the furthest reaches of eastern Europe, propelled by calculus-like rhythms and genteel vocals.
The visuals are a delight as well: Is that really a shirt and tie on Dónal as he sails The Good Ship Kangaroo? A fiery, freewheeling collection. universalmusic.com
Planxty’s Between the Jigs and the Reels: A Retrospective is released on October 28th through Universal Music.

Hey Christy, we met 8 years ago at a book launch of ” A walk in my Shoes”. I thought you might enjoy this play on “wearing of the green” verse:
Paddy dear and did you hear
the news that going round
the gardai and the teachers are
no longer to be found.
No more gardai on the beat
no teachers to be seen
for there’s a is a bloody heave agin
playing on the team.
Oh they met with politicians
who took them by the hand
and said sure poor ould Ireland and
how will she still stand.
She’s the most distressful country that ever we have seen
and their blaming politicians
for stomping on their dream.
And since the face that we are aware
is failure’s cruel red
Ould Ireland sons have all forgot the blood
that once was shared.
