Christy
Walking out the door to catch my flight to Cork form Boston. Thanks for the tip about the 4711ers. You have great fans. Hilary has been a great help. I am a bit nervous about traveling so far with my Martin, but I am excited that you may be able to sign it. You are an inspiration and It would be an honor. I really think its great that you chat with your fans online, its a rare thing indeed.
Ride On and see you Saturday Night!!!

Hi Christy, just a quick hello and a small ask if you could include Nancy Spain in your set list for Friday night in the Opera House.
We are looking forward to seeing and hearing you with Martin’s band.
Kindest regards, John & Eileen O Neill.
Christy's reply
Babs Keating country …..and him playing in his bare feet….did’nt he play Hurling and Football for Munster in The Railway Cup Finals on the same day ? He played for Ardfinnan against Commercials in Cahir back in 1964 in The County Final. The Boc marked him that day….Liam Boland lorded it at midfield, Tom Pollard never put a foot wrong…Michael Egan ( of Windgap) was man of the match..Theo played that day too (I think) Timmy Dwyer sang Delilah after…Antony Burke, Dennis Donoghue, Johnny and Timmy Ryan, John O’Mara, Frank Lafford were among those who also featured…I have the photo somewhere…we filled the cup copiously..it 2 days to get back to Clonmel…
Christy, I trust you are well. I’m in Brixton waiting for the small child to come out of the 02 academy. Did you ever come to this part of South London? It’s very much changed. I feel old. 🙂 We will be attending the Opera House in the only county in Ireland (allegedly) to see you and the Trad Band on Friday. For the first time ever. I’m very happy to be doing this. I hope you’ll all have fun and eat well and carouse. Thank you xx
Christy's reply
I had the pleasure of playing the Brixton Academy about 25 years ago….have some vivid memories of that venue which I may share sometime…played a Folk Club around there in the late 60s..all I remember is that the pint of Light & Keg was 2/6 and my fee was £7 ( or 56 pints of keg so I was on good wages)…glad to hear that you are coming to The Rebel County on Friday…we will do all we can to entertain out long haul listeners..we have Brian Gleeson travelling over from The Schtates
Dear Christy,
Very good … so I hope you’ll be able to perform this philosophical piece live one of these days!
I see you played it 15 years ago in Kilkenny … Can you help with the melody, please? We both know that we know it from an old song (maybe even with German words) but cannot find out.
I must admit I was a bit premature, the crocuses have disappeared again they’re covered under the White Blanket. Since this morning it’s winter again – and it’s still snowing.
Beware of the February debacle next Monday!
Take care, Traudel
Christy's reply
“Love is Teasing” was the melody played behind the lyric….Google to hear Dolly MacMahon sing it 50 years ago..
…..Declan Sinnott, Donal Lunny and I were recording in Ballycallan,County Kilkenny back in 2002 when this emerged late one freezing Winter’s moonlit night….unplanned, unrehearsed it rolled along…it did not make the album (This is The day) but worked well on the subsequent Box Set (1964-2004)….I first heard this Sam Beckett lyric on an LP of Beckett’s lyrics recorded by Jack McGowran …(Jack can also be seen on the tube)
We seem to have a ‘serious student’ of the folk song and suchlike in Dagrab and I like reading the posts. I’m reminded as I observe that quote ‘stained with struggle’ of that wry line about the winners writing the history, the losers (of the war) sing and write the songs. I’m thinking of the lines from ‘Ten years before I saw the light of morning…’.
Only about a week ago I saw something online (again) about Franco’s war victims and trying to find the graves.
Hello Christy,
Glad to read “The Gardener” will be on your next album! I’m looking forward to it very much and can’t wait to hear your 10 new songs.
We started the gardening season today in lovely sunshine, surrounded by blooming snowdrops and crocuses – and in the evening the blackbirds were singing for the first time. Seems spring is in the air …
Best wishes, Traudel
Christy's reply
your post reminds me of track 2 on the pink album of the box set…thanks for reminding me…every now and then I wonder could that Beckett piece be done live…maybe I will try and get it together some day…

Hi Christy
An interesting EFDSS organised day of talks about broadsides, mainly from C19th.A packed room in the cloistered Chetham’s school was appropriate, being one of the oldest buildings in the city.
There’s info on the EFDSS website but some highlights are worth mentioning here ( I also have a few snaps of some interesting broadsides/art work,if there’s any way of e mailing them to you)
Great to hear a keen, young enthusiast.A local lass, specialising in exploring the Manchester ballads/broadsides.The charismatic,Jennifer Reid, with an informative website and a newly released CD with a legendary reggae based band ‘Edward 11’…

Some Irish connections and the influence on C19th English street music being studied too. Some years away from publication yet,but worth waiting for the thesis from isobel Corfe from University of Ireland -Galway.
Light hearted references a plenty,as befits Mancunian (often innuendo based)humour. Some wonderful contemporary descriptions of the hawkers and singers…’Ballad mongers’,’an enchanting vagrant;’ and the evocative description of a street scene when residents of Oldham St complained of ‘an infestation of ballad singers’….also,I think the book ‘The swell’s night guide’ should be standard issue instead of being under close supervision in the British Library!
Further to recent discussions about Irish music in London ,there’s news of a talk by the curator of the forthcoming Topic CD releases…Reg Hall will talk about ‘It was mighty’ at Cecil Sharp House on Tuesday,23/2/16 @ 7pm.

What a magical sound last night in Mullingar, the blend of instruments along with your singing was truly amazing. We loved every second of it, the usual complaint, over too quickly. Enjoy all your gigs, we look forward to the Spring, the new album and catching up with you again soon. Take care Christy.
Christy's reply
there is something about that room in Mullingar that always makes for a good gig…we played 2 hours 20 mins last night and it seemed to flash past, back in the sixties I used to play two 20 min sets… that was the norm in the old Ballad lounges
great vibe and audience singing in The Gar..thanks for your support and feedback
Thanks for another fantastic gig in Mullingar last night. Really really special show. The blend of Music and songs just seems to get better and better. We had a bit of mechanical difficulty on the way and just about made it in time but we were so glad that we did. Would’ve liked to carry on to Kilkenny too but circumstances didn’t allow. Spancil Hill was very special last night……
P.s. See a mention of Little Musgrave and wonder how it would fit with you and the trad outfit ?? Or maybe ye have played together somewhere on the tour ?

I’m delighted to hear your first gigs of “Year 50 Tour” went so well. Thanks to Adam’s photos (on 4711ers.org) an Hilary’s generosity we are able to share in a little in spite of long distance.

Hi Christy,
Encouraging news that Dave Swarbrick’s health is improving but he’ll be in hospital for awhile yet.
I’m not sure if Fairport Convention has much of a profile amongst Guestbookers but I thought I’d share this info. The band is a few months behind you on the road and planning a 50th anniversary tour next year. They’re asking fans to nominate the set list by emailing a max of 20 songs, recorded by the band over the decades.Selections will be made from information sent to
‘Matty Groves’ and ‘Meet on the Ledge’ are done deals,so don’t need to be nominated.
Your/Planxty’s version of ‘Matty’ has been one of my all time favourites for aeons. If ever you fancy ‘Meet on the Ledge’ it would also be great for your style…amazing that Richard Thompson wrote that when he was a teenager.Such an evocative song.
Enjoy the weekend gig buzz,Christy

Christy's reply
That’ll be “Little Musgrave” Dave….did a few versions of that over the years …The Planxty version was always a joy to perform…I still remember playing it at festival in Switzerland..at the end ,Matt Molloy segued into a piece of music that was perfect….
