Not sure if your aware of the story of Patrick O’Connell the Dubliner who won La Liga with Real Betis FC as manager their one and only title. Patrick helped save FC Barcelona as manager from financial ruin during the Spanish Civil War taking the team on a tour of the USA,Mexico and Cuba and raising the necessary funds to take the club out of debt during this turbulent period.
Patrick was the first Irishman to captain Manchester United and captained Ireland to their first title in 1914 the British Home Championship.
Sadly for 56 yrs Patrick has been buried in an unmarked grave in London,he died destitute in London and is buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery Kensal Green.
Our group are a small group(6) of football fans from Ireland,Scotland and England who are raising funds for a proper memorial and a bust of Patrick to take to Camp Nou next season Patrick’s 80th Anniv. of becoming the only Irishman to manage FC Barcelona.
Recently Dublin City Council ratified our application for a plaque and it was unveiled at 87 Fitzroy Av. Drumcondra,Dublin 3 by Mike O’Connell Patrick’s Grandson,Maureen O’Sullivan TD,Martin Buchan Man United and Bertie Auld & John Clark Celtic FC and Steve Archibald FC Barcelona.
Our group are unveiling a mural painted by award winning artist Danny D. on the Falls Rd. Belfast on Aug 7th sponsored by Crown Paints – it tells Patrick’s journey from Belfast Celtic FC his first club via Old Trafford,Seville to Barcelona. It will be unveiled by the Lord Mayor of Belfast,Bertie Auld & John Clark Lisbon Lions and Brian Wilson Celtic Director.
Following the unveiling Maureen O’Sullivan TD for Dublin Central will chair a discussion on Patrick as part of Feile an Phobail with football historians from Europe on Patrick’s story in the Devenish Complex,Finaghy,Belfast 7:30 on Aug 7th Free Event.
Patrick’s grave will be restored in September with a ceremony in London and we are now working on raising funds for the bust.
To this day Patrick is known in Barcelona as ‘Don Patricio the Saviour of Barcelona’.
I knew a little of this story from a documentary on TV some time back….you and your companeros are to be congratulated for achieving these commemorations to Patrick O’Connell. Thanks for sharing the story. I look forward to seeing Danny Devanney’s mural of Patrick when I visit later in the year.

One of these days you are gonna come to Donegal and the sun will be splitting the rocks …can’t believe it’s like this today . Not to worry, the songs will sound just as good maybe even better . We will let the music keep our spirits high as we head through the Gap to Bundoran.
Thank you for your kind words Christy. My grandpa said it is important to gather blessings. So shall we both mind our crockery, let the music keep our spirits high and slap on the Factor 50. xx

Sad to hear of the death of Peggy O’Hara- one of those Irish mothers who suffered much. The Time Has Come never fails to move me- sums up perhaps the most courageous act any mother could ever do and a fine tribute to Peggy and all those mothers. The flame he while leaving still burns strong.

news came yesterday of Peggy’s passing….We send our sympathy to all the O’Hara family…I first met Peggy back in 1981 and subsequently met her again at my Sister’s house in County Clare….what Peggy shared with me led to writing of “The Time has Come”…I see her face every time I sing that song
Just back from Mairtin, Cathal and Seamie’s gig with RTE Contempo quartet. Some wonderful mixes of sounds and styles. They sure are a talented bunch. Hope the summer is going well for you

Christy, by the day, I realise your value and what you have given. It grows & it dwarfs me. You are what music is about for me. I still find it hard to digest your stamina, spirit & unwavering character. You may doubt your past, as do we all, but your past has built the man you’ve become. You’re irreplaceable, you are both a national treasure & indeed a diamond of folk in it’s broadest sense. I gave up drink for most of this year & piled on the pounds, I’m gonna start on the sup again to lose some weight 😉 Often times I contact you wanting to impress, searching for a connection to your well of spirit and dedication. But I want this to be about you & who you are. I will sing your songs & tell everyone what you have done for music. You’re one of th greats, yourself, Shane & Van. So unique. Thank you.

Hey Christy,
Woke up today writing a song. I had John Prine in mind picking his guitar with a New Orleans rhythm backing him.; but, my cameras batteries ran out, so I couldn’t tape it while I still remembered the melody I had come up with.
So I changed a few words and made a poem out of it.
I’ve forgotten how punctuation is supposed to go in poetry. Ha.
Anyway, here it is.
Lost my job to a robot today
put down my wrench and walked away
boss man said it can build 21
in the time it takes me
just to build one.
Lost my job to a robot today
put down my mouse, and walked away
the boss man said it’s much faster than me
does a million trades you never, ever will see.
Was missing my baby
to her house for to see
saw a metalic man
sitting right on her knee.
Starting to go crazy,
didn’t know what to do,
so I went home,
and had me a few.
I’m going home
I just don’t care anymore
you let that cold steel robot
push me out the door
going to open up the fridge
and tip me a few
’cause it’s one thing that son of a bitch robot
can never do.
Lost my job to a robot today
all the CEO’s are hiding away
sent our jobs
way overseas
you don’t care about us
you do as you please.
There’s one big computer
running the show
where my boss ends up
you already know.
So, I’m going home
’cause I don’t care anymore
going to lift up my feet
right up off of that floor
going to open up the fridge
and tip me a few
’cause that’s the one thing
that that goddamned robot can never do.

Hope all is well with you. Just did some work in the garden and was thinking of you. I recalled that fine day in May when we passed Waterford on the way to our last overnight stay in Dunmore East and spotted the large poster of yourself in front of the hotel. We wished you would appear on that very night and not exactly two months later … Right place but wrong time!
But these days we were very delighted to see your Glengarriff gig announced … Eccles Hotel – WOW!!! We’ve been there lots of time before but never imagined to seeing you there on stage one day.
