its shaping up nicely ….getting back into UK mode….my first visit “over” was as a 16 year old when I worked in Walls for the Summer…stayed in Southhall and worked in Hayes..myself and the late Pat (Paul) McGowan,my best growing-up pal, along with Tony Byrne from Athgarvan and Audeon McStay from Kildare….I had a few Clancy Brothers songs, once outside a few pints of keg I’d not hesitate to Rosin The Bow
Well I’ve known a fair few girls As I’ve travelled roun this world
And they came in lotsa funny shapes and sizes
And a tiny hill of beans
Is all that romance means
Unless you find the one who compromises.
See before you love a girl
And before that she loves you
There has to be a lotta common ground
Takin high times when you find them And rollin with the low.
Is the only way that she will stick around.
Easy girls are easy found
Bits hanging in full view
Waitin to get burned with splashin coffee
Some of them are paper thin
Some are in between
And others look like all they eat’s banoffee.
But common ground is not for one
It has to cut both ways
You have to meet your partner in the middle
So wash his car, cook his food
Be a divil in his bed
And put the seat down when he’s had a piddle.
So take your time and wait
Til you find your soul mate
And never mind a sibling or a cousin
There’s a perfect one for you
Not just anyone will do
Cos just anyone’s are Found a dime a dozen.
Dear Christy,
Unfortunately we cannot see the moon rising over Bantry Bay because of that bloody rain and fog. Hopefully the weather is improving and the full moon will be visible tomorrow. Your performance of beautiful Gortatagort with MOC-Band at Spanish Point was incredible. As much I loved Farmer Michael Hayes with Máirtín’s and Cathal’s vivid accompaniment and Jimmy’s and Seamie’s rhythm sounds. It’s such an enjoyment to experience you with the Boys – your playing together is absolutely brilliant! I also liked to hear Brendan’s Voyage, Raggle Taggle Gypsy, Butterfly, Cliffs of Doneen and Encore again. But it was a pity that Patrick Murphy left the room prematurely, so I have to wait for his appearance til another gig …
Go Raibh Maith Agat for the magic night at the West Coast of Clare!
Best wishes, Traudel

Hi Christy
Best wishes in advance for your birthday. Hope it’s fantastic!
I came by this song yesterday and I keep listening to it. I wondered if
you’ve heard it or if you’d like it.
It’s very sad but also has a positive message in it.
Thanks for replying. No deadline intended. I just would like to know how influential Dominic Behan was on your music and songwriting and if you ever made recordings with him. I know he was involved in Prosperous. Was Peader Kearney an influence? Were there any local musicians in Kildare who gave you that boost as a musician? Woody Guthrie and Dylan? I saw you and Jimmy in Belfield about ’73 or ’74 I think. A great night. I often went to see Jimmy play with Red Peters and so on. Such a sweet player. I play and write myself and I’m mixing and mastering a cd at the moment. There are quite a few songs relating to recent social and economic events. It a crossover of Irish, Blues, African and Oriental and Flamenco influenced music.
Mise aris,,,,,,,Multiple posts seem to be the order of the day !!!, ..so what else to do on a wet bank holiday weekend only find and share good music ,, Cathal Hayden has been playing his own beautiful version of the Mountains of Pomeroy at gigs…. Hi All. This is a clip of Mickey Mc Connell singing Only her Rivers Run Free https://youtu.be/hTrksuLyKLA in John B Keanes pub in Listowel where he performs regularly. The Tinkerman’s Daughter is based in North Kerry naming the Feale River. Listowel and Lyrecrompane,,,, it reminds me of the Sigerson Clifford song The Ballad of the Tinker’s Daughter which is a similar story but much longer and based around South Kerry naming Carhan River , Kells and Puck Fair,,,, it was recorded by Tim Dennehy on his Mountains to Sea CD,,,, Tim was at the Spainish Point gig on Thurs,,,,, Those 2 gigs this week were really wonderful…. It’s such a privilege to be there and hear those great sounds. Beir bua agus beannacht. H

Just read the lyrics for first time in 10 years. You would need to explain to Sister Assumptia and the rest of the mini bus that its just an opinion on a good guy who might have been a bit too Rock n Roll for some in 33 AD.
Sunlight claws a far horizon
bleeding, burning, blazing blinding
the darkness melts in a burst of crimson flame.
Sunlight pours down on the trees
and drips like honey through the leaves
on two countrymen met on a dusty lane.
Hello Daniel, you’re out bright and early
and by your clothes I’d say its fairly
safe to say you’re heading for the town.
Aye last night I heard the whole sad story
of what’s befallen Joe and Mary
and I thought it only right to rally round.
I hear they didn’t bring the body home
to bury him here with their own
some people say big Joe was too ashamed.
And herself, I hear, took it so bad
that she hasn’t spoke a single word
she’s just sitting there and whispering his name.
Sure ‘twas her that filled the young lad’s head
with things she heard and stuff she read
‘tis said ’twas that that drove the lad astray.
Aye when you’re not content with what you have
its easy to go to the bad
not like your young lad like all the neighbours say.
They’re not all as smart as our young Judas
he’s the sharpest, he’s the shrewdest
a perfect son, our constant pride and joy.
He’s got so much money stays out so late
now that he’s working for the State
That’s Judas, That’s My Boy.
Joe’s young lad really knew his craft
his joinery was a work of art
I’d say he was gifted with his father’s hands.
There was a lot of her in him as well
and she seemed to have him in her spell
as she sat there smiling, making all her plans.
Mind you he was the lad could shoe a cart
before he had to get too smart
and went mingling with the rabble in the town.
Aye and he mixed with whores and pimps and thieves
and mad prophets and their crazy priests
not like your young lad, he’d never let you down.
Well, I’ll let you be upon your way
I’ve caused you far too much delay
and at this time of year theres so much work to do.
I suppose my calling means no more
than to tell them that’s what friends are for
and I’ll let them know that you’ll be calling too.
When the evening sun goes down
I’ll dress myself and I’ll go to town
and I’ll say how much I’m sorry to big Joe.
And I’ll try not to look into his eyes
or listen to the mother’s cries
as I lift the latch and out the door I go.
Sunrise claws a far horizon
bleeding, burning, blazing blinding
the darkness melts in a burst of crimson flame.
Sunlight pours down on the trees
and drips like honey through the leaves
on two countrymen met on a dusty lane.

Tried to sing it many years ago but could not do it justice..there is a good clip of hi m singing his “Lidl Aldi Song” on youtube…. The McConnells of Florencecourt, a great family of writers, musicians and songsters…I still remember hearing “Only Our Rivers Run Free” for the first time in the Leeds Irish Club circa 1971 sung by Cathal McConnell
What a mighty gig in Miltown Malbay yesterday…… We had a fantastic time….. As we live in France, we cannot come as often as we’d love too ….. but yesterday….wow…. there are no words to describe how happy we were….. Just thank you, thank you, thank you !!!! Carole

Hair raising stuff. Must have listened to your version and others of these magnificent songs hundreds of times since. I brought two people who didn’t know too much about you that night and bringing another when you play there on the 11th. You and Declan will have another fan, no doubt. Would love to hear the 15th International Brigade, Stardust and Nancy Spain Monday week. Had the pleasure of singing with Barney Rushe in a bar in Malaga in in 2004 and I only just learned that he has passed away.
