Yet another beautifully written and evocative chat – definitely a book in there (even if it’s a publication of “Collected Chats and Wanderings”). Always a pleasure to read – and brings past gigs to life. Cold and snowy here tonight – Me hat is frozen to me head !!! Interesting times here where a beautiful statue of Manannan Mac Lir was stolen and replaced with a cross bearing the message “Thou Shalt Not Worship False Gods”. Hope they find it as it’s hard for an artist to see his work and vision destroyed. http://youtu.be/doRXDik96yM
I believe Jimmy MacCarthy was working on a project about Manannan – no doubt there will be great songs and tunes if he is. Best wishes for year 49 of the tour – hope to see a few of the gigs along the way. Keep well.

Peggy has been a stalwart ..been listening to a lot of early Ewan and Peggy, her accompaniments are so varied and creative, her playing so accomplished and sensitive
I can barely remember some of the groups – I wish was old enough to enjoy the 70’s in Ireland Spud, Planxty, Rory G, Horslips, Thin Lizzy in their pomp and prime, Paul Brady the list is endless……….. and by the looks of them not very interested in the boy band market
Hope your back on the mend Christy that was a bad aul does over the Christmas keep her lit and keep bringing the joy to the millions !!!
What a brilliant chat that is…great start to an afternoon…feel like I’ve just done 49 years on the road with you…what a humdinger..loved that, thank you…

just heard that Jack of “Jack and Mavis ” passed on at a good age….I played their club nr Rochdale (Kingsway) way back…he was a lovely man and they were a great couple in every way…
Wasn’t expecting to find a review of Luka Bloom at the Mitchell Library here but respect to Gail for that and for having the balls to ask you to deliver a message – I thought of it at the time but didn’t dare!
So, just in case you’re feeling incredibly tolerant and generous…. could you possibly tell him I’m sorry, I’m easily scared, that sad songs make me cry, I’m glad I stayed and to access his feckin’ email … he thinks I don’t care and he’s so wrong!
Christy…the wheaten was wolfed and you’ll soon be lashin it out up in Mullingar…was in there on Sunday to watch the big son and his team mates from O’Donovan Rossa lashin it out to book an all-Ireland final spot in Croke Park on February 15th against London’s Kilburn Gaels…fair play to the diaspora but Rossa abu! you’d need the brown bread going out to watch a match these days….hope it was a long ball game
Hi Christy
I have an alert on my phone that informed me you were playing a gig in Chester UK on March 14. So excited, I used the link and booked 3 tickets with Ticketmaster, only to find the gig was in Athlone, not Chester, when I tried to book a hotel! I can’t get there (still working) and Ticketmaster won’t refund despite this all being a bit of a con. It’s a lot of money to lose, though I’d pay double to see you (been to about 20 of your gigs). Any chance I can sell the tickets on anywhere? x
A long shot here Christy. I’m booked to come over to the Vicar St gig on April 20th with my husband and son. Got a surprise when tickets stated strictly over 18s at this show. Does this apply to children accompanied by adults? Trip is for son’s 12th birthday after he had a great night at Glasgow Concert Hall gig last year – he’s getting taller, but don’t think he’d fool the bouncers!!!
Christy's reply
we’ll do our best to distract the crown control engineers
If ye have anyone who’d like to pop along to the gig, Ye Vagabonds, Dylan Walshe & Conor Linnie, just shoot us a message. Sound Christy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzC4uv-fxZc

I’d have fancied that gig myself Dylan but I’ll be lashin it out up in Mullingar..hope ye have a good night and send them home sweatin….
Hi Christy,
Last Thursday a friend and I travelled to Glasgow to see Luka at the Mitchell Library. I signed up to his guestbook with the intention of posting a comment but I don’t know if it’s me or the site – I couldn’t find a way to post.
Hope you don’t mind me posting it here instead!
It was a magical night, we had just enjoyed listening to Bella Hardy and it was the interval. We nipped out to get our pre ordered drinks and hurried back in to settle down to listen to Luka. The stage was set and I was buzzing and couldn’t wait. Just as we got back into our seats, there was an announcement that said there was an emergency and everyone had to leave by the nearest exit. We wondered at first if it was some sort of build up but soon realised this was not the case and we, all four hundred of us, filed out. We were told by staff to cross the road and to stay away from the building.
Four wailing fire engines promptly arrived and we stood shivering. I heard a voice across the road singing ‘Come on baby light my fire’ and realised with surprise that it was Luka.
“Come on!” says my friend, let’s go and say hello. “No!” I replied, we can’t! We’re not supposed to cross the road. Well, we did anyway and he posed for a couple of photos with us and we had a quick chat. We requested a song too.
We were soon allowed back in and the gig began.
It was magical. He played and sang and talked his socks off . He sang our song for us too- Love is a Monsoon and we were absolutely made up.
If it hadn’t been for the ’emergency’ we would never have met him or got our request played.
If you don’t mind, the next time you speak, could you pass on how he made our night.- Thanks
So glad too that you have now recovered and looking forward to coming to one of your fantastic gigs again soon. You spoil us!
God bless – Gail and Tracey x

message deliverd, I was happy to let him know..Im a Bogman, deep down, its where we come from x
I forgot he wrote ‘Tim Evans’ which I’ve seen & heard you singing a few times. We’ve a case here now (havent we?) now a posthumous pardon and a request to our Justice Minister to issue such a pardon.
I’ve just read your ‘chat’ column and I loved the video from Stoneybatter, quite a few have recorded that ‘Winsbury’ song incl Ann Briggs.
Years ago you sang ‘Good Ship Kangaroo’ at a gig one night (ages ago) and you told us you were gigging in Rome one night in ‘Mussolini’s garden’, at least someone had told you the place used to be the dictator’s garden and residence, and you got a request up from the audience for ‘The Good Ship Kangaroo’ and you sang it. I wonder was that the ’84 concert? Some great tracks in the set list.
I read about your illness, speedy recovery, and I will be singing along come Paddy’s weekend in Athlone.
Thinking of the great Ewan McColl, born one hundred years ago today, the great Ewan. A man of principle, principles he stuck steadfast to right through his long life. I saw him performing once, an upstairs room in a pub up around Euston or Kings Cross, himself and Peggy S. I recall I went up to talk to them after the gig – about what I cant remember. Peggy told me, this I recall, she’s Peter Seeger’s ‘half-sister.’ I think I spoke to her about a recording the Clancy’s made with Pete Seeger.
Ronan Collins on Radio One played ‘Companeros’ on his Friday prog, I’ve a Ewan track to play tomorrow on my prog on Athlone Community Radio.
There’s many of us wont be around in fifty years time, upon that fifty years arriving I’d guarantee lots will still (still) be singing the songs of Ewan McColl, many probably either not knowing his socialist roots nor even knowing the particular song is itself a Ewan McColl song.
Never forgotten – Ewan McColl, born 25 January 1915.

great that he is being so well remembered…I’ve just recieved a centenary triple CD put together by his sons ( an advance copy) such a great singer and writer..that club was called The Singers Club and was held in The Union Tavern nr Euston…I did a gig there in 1968 with Ewan and Peggy, sat between them on the stage…that was a huge step for me in my early career….his sons (Neil and Calum) are also compiling an album of Ewans tracks by other singers and they have invited me to do a track….good buzz….these past 47 years I have sung many of Ewan’s songs and recorded

Hi Christy so glad to hear that you’re on the mend and we’ll hear the pipes a callin’ again soon. However it doesn’t look like they’ll be a callin’ at Warwick Arts centre anytime soon ….unless you know otherwise? Hello Mr. Moore from Chicago! Cleaning out my car today and I find your Christy Moore Collection album and I just have to say, your music has brought back some happy memories of living in Ireland, driving with my dad to and from Cork City every weekend. By chance do you ever come to America to play? Id love to go with my dad one day to one of your shows, either here or back in Cork! Thanks for your awesome music!

Morra Donna, Its a lovely thing when childhood music-in-the-car memories are evoked…your post reminds me of my own far-off childhood car memories…I’ve not played America since ’97, its looking unlikely that I will return but who knows what way the wind’s gonna blow…. next gig in Cork will be The Fourth Of July ! Best wishes to you and your Dad
