I first “went over” in the Summer of 1962…..worked in Walls Sausage & Pie factory in Southall….Summer 1963 worked for EMI in Hayes…..1966 moved over full time….over the years also worked for North Sea Drilling Company on the oil rig Orion….worked at the Peas for Ross Foods in Westwick nr Norwich…box-jumping at a waste paper factory back of Picadilly ,Manchester….a few stints with the Grey Murphy in West London….Kennedy’s in Manchester…a local builder in Bury…..all the time all I wanted to do was sing….I pushed hard at it…tried many avenues…some hard travellin… some rough livin.. some heavy sledgin…slept rough a few times…London & Great Yarmouth , each time managing to get back on track….so many craturs dont make it back ….Thanks Be, I got my break and grasped it …..still hanging on for dear life with gratitude
Looking at Dessie reminded me of all this
In the spirit of protest…Springsteen wrote,recorded,released a stormer of a song..now on YouTube..
Many people will oppose him and talk about bandwagon jumping…but,for me,he’s playing a blinder and I’ll never forget his on stage venom ,here,last May.

A sunny,Spring like morning…a city centre wander,book shop bound.
Not going to tonight’s gig,and I was ‘miles away’,passing The Bridgewater Hall…saw people getting off a tour bus…hey,The Unthanks! So,smiley Rachel and Becky,greetings,handshakes and a welcome to the city…lovely to have crack.Theyll now be deep in pre gig mode,with orchestra as well.
I was smiling as I went on my way…and remembering chats with you and Declan on the same car park after Bridgewater gigs,years ago…Special times…

my last job was in Lewis’s store… I was a “cold meat porter”….I lasted 3 hours…they still have my cards…it was a struggle to make ends meet…but I was about to turn a corner..this journey was about to begin…all started in Suffragette City

It was lovely to see and here you mention Wally Page on the TG4 program on NYE..I know so many of us here think of him often, especially today as it marks Wallys third anniversary. His songs and music still do the talking. He was very special, much loved and missed…Pony rider go chase the sun, go easy now..Baby’s In Blue..

Hey Christy, I hope you’re doing ok ! Last year was great I got to a bunch of gigs with you and next up looks like May 26′ I’m excited for that. Recently I came across a video from 2005 at the Cambridge Folk Festival where you and Dec did the Yellow triangle, I shared it on a few social media platforms a few weeks back and to my surprise, it went down like a lead balloon. Anyway keep on speaking, and singing, thank you Christy.

When a talented artist dies,it’s always consoling to absorb the tributes. Also,sad that the person plus nearest and dearest don’t get the accolades in their lifetime.
So,with the news of Martin Carthy’s retirement,declining health and his amazing family…it seems a good time to say ‘thanks’…Before I prattle on,I know that you go back to Carthy and Swarb…I first saw Marting
gig in 1970.
Thankfully,there’s a wonderful legacy.Tangible,real music on disc and CD…and a stack of good stuff on YouTube…documentaries are gold.
In the 80s and 90s,I saw Carthy up se a few times.’Nightshift’ got the nod for some support slots…watching the genius tune and play/sing complex ballads was a masterclass and joyous…
Carthy…an innovator and influence on Dylan and Simon…so,a time to be sad and a time to appreciate a life and a talent…
The kettle’s on and I’m YouTube bound…’Famous Flower of Serving Men’…I’ll never know how Martin does it,but I’ll never stop loving it.

always true to his muse, always respectful to the Tradition
no one has done more to guarantee a future for the songs of these four nations
may he have a peaceful retirement

but his warmth and sparkle still prevail

No plot spoilers here,but the on screen and soundtrack music is worth the admission,I reckon.
Scenes of field recordings are well done…amazing that wax cylinders were state of the art equipment just over 100 years ago…
