Bad news the Tailteann games were washed out today.
I need some music to pick me up.
Thinking of David and Liam who put so much into resurecting this historic gathering.
Misty in Roots, live at the eurocounter 79 album is cheering me, john peel gave them 9 peel sessions.

once at the Trip To Tipp the Heavens opened and rained buckets
I was up on the stage doing my best
it rained so hard that the audience became infatuated with their wetness
it became quite beautiful
once at a London Fleadh it rained cats ‘n dogs all afternoon
I went on at 5pm and ,on cue, the sun came out !!
I gained all the credit as steam rose off the glorious listeners
once at Ballyconneely in Connemara the entire Festival was blown into the Atlantic over night…myself and Jimmy Faulkner played on the back of a trailer to the few souls who lingered on
Lovely setlist from Sligo.. I’ve yet to see a gig in Knocknarea Arena, but I sat college exams in that very hall about twelve or thirteen years ago.. fond memories of walking up to the Park Hotel to one of your gigs in the same week as the exams! Was lucky to chat with one of Sligo’s finest; Seamie O Dowd, at a gig in Tubbercurry a few weeks back. We laughed at a story of ye taking the stage one night all set to play “City of Chicago” and you tore into “Go,Move,Shift”..gotta keep em on their toes! On the night feed here.. best get another couple hours zZz

Evening Christy. Had to sit up straight earlier and nearly spilt my cuppa when slumped in front of Pointless on BBC 1. Whose pic should come up on screen to be identified but your good self. Only 2 people out of 100 could place you although Alexander Armstrong was able to name you. I’d say you’re under the radar over here and maybe that suits you just fine. It does show though that our sort of music is very much unknown in the UK.

Thanks for last night Christy and for putting up the set list. The song I couldn’t get out of my head on the way home was Metropolitan Avenue and you didn’t even sing it! You have a catalogue bigger than the Argos one. I’d had an emotional couple of days sitting next to my mum for most of Wednesday. She was laying on a trolley in the emergency department for 18 hours before she could be admitted. Then you mentioned that very problem in one of your songs. Brought a tear to my eye. Only briefly though. The kindness of humanity below the level of politicians is mostly immense. Onwards and upwards Christy. God Bless x

Metropolitan Avenue by Noel Brazil….recorded that in 1986 on an album called “Unfinished Revolutuion”..I wanted to call that album Messenger Boy after Christie Hennessy’s great song covered on that album… but the Warner Brothers convinced me otherwise…that song never took to the stage but every sound check and rehearsal I did with Declan Sinnott we always played it….it evoked such strong images every time I sang it..used to gig it with Jimmy Faulkner way back when we played Germany and Holland…I’ve not played it for years..
hope your Mother has been looked after , that she is in recovery

Hi Christy, Summer is done, Sunday we had our last swim in the outdoor pool along the left bank of the river Schelde. Now it’s closed until May next year so we have to go inside. We will soon switch to winter time…short days, long nights. The time of Johnny Boy. In October we commemorate the stillborn baby, November is the Month of 5 dead women of my family (I better pay attention). Sometimes music takes me to one of them. For example Maria Farantouri. We attended a concert of hers the day before my mother passed away suddently. When I hear her songs it comes back to me.
But now we mourn the victims of genocide, of war and violence. That keeps breaking my heart. In Antwerp we meet every Monday evening to mourn and to protest. You should know: the city hangs flags of friendly countries on the facade of the City Hall. But this year they even raised the israeli flag. Friendly country???? Despite protests the flag remained hanging, incomprehensible! The mayor is now our prime minister, but he is not doing well there either.
Luckily there are people like you who keep us positiv, but also make us think. Thank you!
Enjoy your gig tonight, love Moeke (Luce)

Feeling sorry for myself missing the gig tonight, these words ran through my mind.
Tonight as I stand here in Sligo, My hearts overloaded with pain
As I think of the children in Gaza, Has the European Union no shame?
They’re still doing deals with their killers, as they prop up that rotten regime
They are guilty as hell, as the death toll does swell, their hands are not clean
We should stand up and not remain silent, we must go out each day to campaign
And remind all the lackies in Brussels, that their actions are “NOT IN MY NAME”
As they lie down to sleep in the rubble, left with nothing but only their pride
Let’s send a loud message from Ireland, “Palestine, we stand by your side”
As we gather tonight, lets remember the Plight of the children in Gaza

Hello Christy,
Oh you sent me on a journey this morning. Set off thinking about how you make each place feel important. York was the first time, it was so strong. And then a discussion so long ago with Steve. He was adamant that you strongly interpreted songs. I was equally so that you didn’t. But I had no idea what I meant, It was a feeling in those days. It’s taken a long time. Singing and singing till the songs stopped biting and I stopped struggling. Singing them softly and clearly till someone came and said, you calmed my daughter, it’s my favourite, it’s where my mother comes from, it was so beautiful. And the questions and confusion that brought. You talked about duende and the state of a place. And it’s to do with strength and detached connection. To stand still and let it be itself, and be sincere enough to not have to add our self to the mix. We’re there of course, that’s clear. But it is clear. A clear path for a song. And I come back to Daori Farrell who explained it so clearly. The song sings the singer.
I love the way they evolve.
And now I’m done and it’s time to think about a difficult meeting that’s coming this morning. I’ll do my best and hope it’s ok.
Some man, Christy. Thank you for the reply. A team of us from Glasgow and Kildare will be there on opening night at Vicar Street on Saturday 1st Nov. Can’t wait. Enjoyed some magical nights at the ‘Carousel of Healing’ over the years, including a favourite in 2012 when the Celts had done particularly well in Europe midweek and crowd was hell-bent on Lonesome Boatman between every song; you merrily grabbed the bodhran to lead the way – no one left Lonesome that night.
Glasgow seems to be an important thread, with Black is the Colour, Barrowland, Bonnie Banks. Broomielaw on the new record is a beauty as well (not at all terrible).
Hamish Imlach enjoying some quiet resurgence partly thanks to Mary Wallopers taking ‘Cod Liver Oil’ (a great version). Have seen snippets over the years of you with Billy Connolly. Must have been rare times. Scotia and Clutha and Barras still roaring now. Gallowgate changed a fair bit in recent years, and still just the same.
I’m inclined to mention selfishly an all-time favourite of ‘Motherland’…but it’s just one of hundreds. Thankful for the chance to come to you again in Dublin town. Thank you.
Christy's reply
You mention Glasgow being an” important thread”
Every place is special in its own unique way…..many venues are outstanding…. I’ve always felt a special connection with Glasgow..since my first gig there in Montrose St in 1967 I’ve always loved returning…I played vrious clubs and venues and then, in the 1980s, I played Barrowland for the first time… ever since it has remained my favourite venue outside Ireland….there is an atmosphere that is unequalled…. the historical connection with Glasgow always shines thru on those hot, sweaty, emotional nights…..the very state of the place leaves an impact..writing these few lines I can sense it….I’ve played in some top concert halls around the world but none call me back like Mags McIvors…….
but its never an easy gig, from the opening number you gotta work it, you gotta hang in there until the duende kicks in…Barrowland Duende is like no other…its never a silent spiritual space, its full on like an incoming tide… it can go awry betimes, I’m always knackered after it..
But I loves it

There’s lots of flags going up here, in different pockets of the country. We drove through one or two of the villages surrounding Bradford on Saturday, on our way to Settle. One or two area had flags on every lamppost. Union Jacks and St George’s flag. Mainly flying half way up the poles. Ladder height. This flag has such strong connotations. I
