In the cafe at The Whitworth Art Gallery…wondering if we both know the same Mike Billington…and,in walks Jennifer Reid…a true force of nature, broadside singer extraordinaire and someone who always makes me smile…
No surprise that her New Zealand tour had people visiting several gigs and she’s returning early next year.

there is an outpouring of requests for call-outs in Derry….18 at the moment and thats before I land into The Forum where ,doubtless, a few more will be waiting…its a privilige to recieve such requests…. but my focus has gotta be on the audience as a whole, the perfomance, the songs new and old, guitar tuning, will I play the drum tonight, I have a number of songs particular to Derry that I will try and perform ….gotta get the feel of the room…a great crowd gathered to listen in anticipation, many carrying different emotions of loss, celebration, distress, jubilation…many more out for the craic, some long distance listeners on personal pilgrimages,

Hey Christy, I hope you’re doing great. A terrible beauty is well settled in now, it’s a wonderful bunch of songs, The Black and Amber resonated with me, not because of my own dad but my maternal grandfather, back in the 1930’s and 40’s singlehandedly funded the development and expansion of The Snailbox in Ashbourne, or so they say. Boy in the Wild is out on it’s own too, and Lyra, I got to see her documentary here in the Irish Arts Center in New York, I think that’s my favorite song on the album. Anyway I haven’t see you since November in Vicar Street but I’m blessed to be heading to The Big Marquee in June with a stop off in Belfast to see Van Morrison, it’s his 80th B’day year too, he’s catching up on you ! Be well Christy and I’m so looking forward to the next gig. Brian.

good to hear from you….I’ve always liked the Snail Box…back in the 70s lived nearby for a while….in recent years have visited occasionally for the dinner..always good grub ..old style Irish cooking ,hospitality without frills…..happy to read your good review of the last album…working on some extra tracks at the moment..Claddagh planning an extended version for later in the year…..I have a new spoken word track recorded, a new version of The Big Marquee , a live version of “Yellow Triangle” from The Waterfront in Belfast this year….currently working on a 4th track…great that you mention James Cramer’s “Lyra McKee”…Its a powerful song to sing…next two gigs are in The Forum in Derry next week where the song takes on an added dimension…..Wish you a good trip next month…from beneath the Black Mountain down South to The Rebel…..also wish you peace of mind this day in yonder big apple
Hi Christy,

Thanks again for a magical evening in Cavan. My little bodhran is going to get a very special place. Hopefully he doesn’t grow to quickly 😉.
In september I will return with my son for his birthday. He is very curious which man has been luring his mother to Ireland for decades.
Very sorry to read about the passing of Donnacadh. We have met him once at Lisdoon in 2011 with your sister.

Great musical journey Birgit! Thanks for the visit to our session, next time bring the guitar and sing Motherland for us!
Christy, just listened again to Cricklewood, I wonder did you recently gig it? It is a tale of times gone by, but the young folk could do with hearing it and knowing the difficulties then…call the barman govnor and ask him for a sub….let him rot in Cricklewood until the end of time.
So many of our folks had to do that…my daddys whole family, including him, luckily working in factories not on the road.
A fine reflection of the economics of the time!

A great fan of yours passed away yesterday, Seán Hurrell from Randalstown. He had cerebral palsay and you did a request for him in the Waterfront in 2013 and wrote him a letter all of which was greatly appreciated by the family. The letter and ticket for the night are in a big frame and held pride of place. Your music was a huge part of his life.
Christy's reply
Rest in Peace Seán Hurrell of Randalstown. Sorry to read news of his passing….please extend my condolences to his family
I’m reminded of my dear Nephew, Donnacadh Rynne, who passed on in recent weeks….
Donnacadh lived his life with the same condition as Seán but, along the way, also developed M.S.which marked a slow decline over the following decades. There were two serious illnesses in our family, he bore both of them
Donnacadh was the outstanding warrior of our extended family…he suffered both his conditions with outstanding dignity, courage, patience and humour.. he was an inspiration to all who’s lives he touched….
May Seán and Donnacadh rest in peace… if Paradise exists, may they meet in Heaven
Great fun to be an invisible passenger on Birgit’s travels for the Oyster and gig ..
Tonight’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Show had a great Peggy Seeger song from her new album and a bonus of ‘Don’t forget your shovel’,requested by a listener who missed ‘your’ show…she listened on catch up,remembered your music being a huge part of holidays in Ireland…and (as for many of us)being a soundtrack for travels.
Hi Christy (and Pat and Dave), May nearly being over it was framed for me with different kinds of music events: At the beginning I enjoyed Pat and other musicians at the session in the beautiful coach house in Rheinbach. Then there was a brilliant Oysterband gig in Cambridge. Only a few days later I went to a friend’s concert in my hometown Essen: Philippinean songs in four different Philippinean languages (not that I could tell one from the other 😉), a very special, interesting and beautiful experience. He sang and a friend he’d met last time more than 30 years ago accompanied him fabulously on guitar. And finally the last “own” (no festival etc) gig of the Oysterband in JJ’s hometown Holmfirth. We could combine that with a road trip through England which was “accompanied” by a very nice email chat with Dave and at random ended up in a session in a pub in Oxford to finish the musical circle. And not to forget: On the way I bought a ticket for your gig in Trim, hoping that I somehow can make it over to Ireland in September.
Life could be worse 😊. And yes, music keeps the spirits high!
All the best to you
Birgit
Dear Christy
As you haven’t been in Belgium for a long time, we have to come to Ireland to hear you.
The four of us will attend your gig at Castlebar on June 20th, so happy we were able to book the last tickets (though we have to sit apart).

So much looking forward to your gig.

safe travels to you Paul…see you in the land of Red & Green
I’ve turned 72 now…family birthday present of a Springsteen gig was special…as was Dylan for my 70th…
