Hi All,
Louise Duffy had A Lazarus Soul in studio today.
I can’t remember a nicer hour spent listening to the wireless.
Happy bank holiday to one and all.

Hey again, Christy, and sorry folks, for the kinship cross-posting! All family ties jive well with what we have on our end, including all the Athlone connections (marriages, burials, births). If Ellen Ryan was your Gran, and Grandpa Christy worked as a banker in Newbridge before turning to farming, “back in the day”, your American cousin has (almost) officially left the building ; ) Thanks again for putting to song what’s really important in our collective lives.
Christy's reply
Ellen Ryan was not our Gran..ours was Brigid Dowling…his second wife…
One of those who played with Wizz in Cornwall was the singer-songwriter Ralph McTell – in the days before he became famous for Streets of London. He said: “It was like getting a knighthood – I couldn’t believe one of my heroes was inviting me down to Cornwall. He had a tent with his wife and boys, I had a little tent, and we played at a pub called the Mermaid in Newquay – until we got fired because the place couldn’t cope with the number of people who came.” He went to a launderette with Wizz “and he realised he hadn’t got any money on him. So we went outside with our guitars and busked for 20 minutes until he had the money to do the nappies.”
Rip Wizz Jones, friend of McTell, Renbourn, Jansch …

Met the bould Wizz way back…I think at a Ralph gig….early on I was awestruck in the company of guitar wizards, I met the lads you mentioned, Davy Graham too, Bert was always warm and welcoming….writing this I’m reflecting on the different guitar styles that have emerged since the early 1960s, I’m thinking of NIc Jones, Martin Carthy, Arty McGlynn, Steve Cooney, Declan Sinnott,Denis Cahill,Chris Woods,Seamie O’Dowd, Bert Jansch.,Luka Bloom, Sean Óg Graham….for most of my life I’ve harboured hang-ups about my very limited guitar playing….that changed these past few years…today I give thanks for my few chords with special thanks to Donal Lunny and Declan Sinnott who helped me find them…..I think I may have 12 chords , betimes I have had to divert melodies to facilitate left hand shortcomings….I’ll not make Rick Beato’s but today I’ll pick up my aged Atkin and practice like billyo
Hi Christy,
I was out just now mucking out the 3 horses.
They wished me to pass on best wishes for your 80th celebrations from Bruno, Frankie and of course Joxer.

Greetings from an American cousin! Kitty (Catherine) Moore was my grandmother. Her dad, William, my great grandpa was the railroad station master at Maynooth ca. 1900. If family notes and history are all correct from cousins Moira and Maeve, your grandpa was my great grandpa’s brother. Miraculously got in to the show last night at NCH and was spellbound and overjoyed the entire time. Having re-familiarized myself with much of your catalogue before traveling here, I knew or recognized most of the fantastic set. Thank you for sharing it with us, and blessing us with your gift of music. Hilary has my contact info, if you’d like to correspond. And finally, hello and hugs to the other Moores, and Happy 80th Birthday!
Christy's reply
our Father’s Father was Christopher Moore…he hailed from Athlone….he did not arrive in Kildare until (methinks) circa 1905 ….his Father was a coachman who hailed from Kilkenny….we had no Moore relatives in Kildare and very few elsewhere….Daddy was an only child, Mammy had one brother…..we had 3 first cousins in Sheffield, one surviving….
I send best wishes to you …..we’re all connected along the way….like waves up to the shore
Christy-what a performance you gave last night!
On the bus now heading west for home-and reflecting on an incredible gig. Still have goosebumps. Our community was devastated last year when Johnny Duhan lost his life in the ocean-and your tribute was beautiful.
Your voice is as sublime as ever and I still hang on you every word-spoken or sung!
Your performance on the bodhran was mesmerising-you could make it sing!
Love how you express yourself and your beliefs through your music. You give a voice to so many who need a voice.
It was my honour to attend and hear you once again… and I’ll remember last might for a long time.
The venue, the lighting, and the simplicity of a man, his voice and his guitar…just wow.. thank you thank you.

I learn so much here.
I’d been wanting to offer you my sympathy on the loss of Donnacha, but I’d no idea how to say it. We don’t seem to be very good at it round here. And then John of Doire said it so perfectly. All from the heart.

Hello Christy,
I m writing today because soon will start an avalange of posts, the gig, your birthday, a lot of important events.
Unfortunately I wasn t able to come over in March but now I m very happy to have the pleasure to see you in Newbridge which will be an extraordinary gig at this date. I ll come over from Bale and I can hardly wait for it. So I know you ll have loads of asks, but s worth a try anyway. Perhaps you ll get an old gem and play ”one last cold kiss” for me. Anyway I ll love whatever you sing and I m sooo looking forward to it. First celebrate a wonderful birthday. We re so blessed that you still enter the stage full of energy and this great music you give to us. I m so thankful for this and the crew around you who make this all possible and happen. So the best as well to them all.
So thank you for all the wonderful music over the decades , ride on and I ll be so happy to see you in Newbridge. I m so much looking forward to travel over on Friday.
And have a wonderful Birthday on Wednesday…I ll be thinking of you in my heart and l ll send all the wishes by thoughts
Lots of love and God bless

a quiet May day here today….a few after-gig loose ends to tie up….the song you mention has been rested these past years….first sang it in 1973 after hearing it on an album by Mountain…..I’ve quite a bit of prep to do before the home town gig ,its unlikely that I’ll get around to re-visiting ” One Last Cold Kiss”( aka Two Island Swans)
that said, anything can happen
Hi Christy,
What a night in the NCH. An amazing and appropriate set list for the night that was in it. It ebbed and flowed beautifully from one song to the next. I used to find the HCH a bit intimidating, but now we are all really settled in there, as if we belong. The audience were really engaging and the response from those behind you was wonderful. What a way to bring your 79th year to a close. Thanks Christy, we look forward to lots more.
Best regards.

Nice tribute for your 80th on Neil Martin’s folk club on Radio Ulster tonight. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002brnt
Got my copy of Ireland’s Own for the tribute too. That was always a welcome read in our home-passed from the granny to the aunt’s and then ourselves. Full of interesting pieces and of course Kitty the Hare, and Cassidy Says. Not to mention the Pen Pal’s section. Was the talk of the county when a local girl married ” Johnny from Carlow”. Alas, I think he proved handier with the fists than the pen.

Neil Martin is one of Ireland’s finest troubadours….his knowledge of the raw-bar, his cello playing (and piping) his beautiful blas agus grá for the teanga, his fun and divvilmint, I had the great pleasure of playing with Neil’s “West Ocean String Quartet” on the album “Where I come from”….
