Hi Christy,
really happy to read about the concerts in Vicar Street! I hope to make it there again as it is definitely one the the highlights in a year and for me now a kind of tradition to be continued (4th time Vicar Street hopefully 🙂 ).
All the best to you

Hello Christy,
Some great comments here. Thanks to John for his prompt towards “saved by a song”. It’s on its, way here. Sounds a great book.
He made me think of your comment about getting up on stage and spending the evening chasing round after your alterego who suddenly appears and runs off with it. You said karaoke. The song sings the singer…. Love it!
Thinking about harps in legends. The Dagda and his magic harp. There’s a little second hand wire strung harp that will be setting off for here from Inverness today. A magic instrument is coming to live in my house. Hopefully it will land midweek. I’ll have to grow some nails to try and do it justice. https://youtu.be/Hhbhb5D_gI0
I can’t wait to hear you sing on Monday 3rd October in Belfast. It just seems so long since I’ve heard you live. No word of a lie, yer singing has saved me over these years. Let the music set yer spirits free! GRMA!! The best gig I’ve heard you at was in 33rd county of Ireland, in Liverpool, magic just magic. If the contender is sung i’ll be the fella crying tears… Of joy! Best wishes to ya!
Regards

Its not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me

when first I landed in Liverpool
I went upon the spree

astride of an old packing case

Good evening Christy ,
Tomorrow evening in the Hawick theatre me and ‘er indoors are going to see the play ‘ the beauty queen of leenane’ looking forward mightily to it.
I remember well ‘juno and the paycock’ from school, sean o’casey, worth going out for the night to if it ever came to the Heart of Hawick theatre….a state of chassis.
Talking of going out, how are those iranian irish lads doing whose music you used to watch, i think it was ‘nave’ ?
Yours in solidarity

Nava are still knocking out the good tunes
We joined then for good Persian Stew last week
Completely understand Christy and can well imagine that you are inundated! I’m listening to Andy singing Farewell to you bonny Kellswater. Tickets in the bag for his gig in Áras Uí Chonghaile – James Connolly visitor centre, within a hound’s gowl of An Cultúrlann. There’s no easy way to say this but the bonny falls chowder is currently off the menu…gutted!
Great reaction to Bundoran….as usual the Hills were alive. Love the new picture; a full room all concentrating in the one direction….wonderful.
I’m involved in editing the memoirs of a local teacher which was written in the 1930’s, and was found in a house clear-out. It’s our intention to publish; hopefully next year. In one particular part I have come across his naming of the local fields : Barlow’s Grove, Malachy’s Fort, the Fox Cover, Darby’s Rock, The Pinnacle, “The Standing Stones, The Cairns or Leachts, Ellen Dunbar’s Schoolhouse, The Spring in the Cow Park, The Lake and the Pinkeens, The Mill-stone, Saint Dachonna’s”. Reminds me so much of “Gortatagort”.
Best Regards,
Ride onn.

Great to hear the magnificent reviews of Bundoran – wouldn’t have expected anything less. Unfortunately never made it due to a family emergency but my heart was there. Great to read of the Ardilaun. Remember a couple of amazing gigs there with Martin, Cathal, Seamie and Jimmy in the days following New Year. Was a brilliant start to the year and Luka made an appearance too. Was a brilliant few days. Good to hear that you’re working away – always difficult to know if the first draft is the best one. Was reading Mary Gauthiers “Saved by a song” and interesting to see how a song develops from the original few words or ideas. Was it Guy Clark who said “Sometimes you write the song, sometimes the song writes you”. Keep doing what you do Christy and hopefully our paths will cross under the Black Mountain.

Thanks for the prompt towards Mary Gauthier’s “Saved by a Song”….
hope things have settled for you
I was signed up to the newsletter on 3 e-mail accounts but realised I hadn’t received anything for ages, if not years – certainly not since some stage in the pandemic anyway. Found out about Vicar St on sale quite by accident and have now resubscribed, full verify e-mail address routine required. Just hoping I get those e-mails in time! I seem to remember they’re sent out in batches and I must be back of the queue now ….
Hello Christy,
I have your songbook here on the piano.
I look at it pretty often, it helped me find that strange first note in Lord Baker.
I usually get songs from people. People I hear or people who live in memories.
I listen obsessively for a day or two and then I stop listening and see where the song leads me. Intuition, introspection, making it up and dumb luck.
I record on the mobile too, like you. You’re damn right about Friday’s hit and Saturday’s miss. I sometimes listen on Sundays too, it can be anything on a Sunday . My stuff is all about progress (hopefully). I’m just learning.
Morning Christy, looking forward to your Armagh gig on 27th. I previously asked for Bright Blue Rose for my friend’s Ann’s birthday and hopefully it’s in your book. Not wanting to be greedy, my son of the ‘sail on jimmy lyrics’ and his wife have given us our first grandchild and she is named Nainsí. Hopefully, you will be playing Nancy Spain for all who love this song. Go well, Mary

Lets see what happens Mary…The requests for call outs and dedications are so numerous that I’ve had to review the situation…the songs themselves are the main purpose of these gigs…if everyone is to be treated the same it might require hundreds of callouts, name checks, requests ..my head would be so baboozled that I could forget the words of Nainsí ,Sail on Jimmy and Bright Blue Rose….I gotta take each gig as it comes, try and go with the unique flow that every night brings…there have been nights where I’ve sung all three of those songs and other nights where they have all been rested…new songs come in, old songs come back…. natives landed last week after an 8 year absence… Burning Times landed as we remembered Lyra McKee…I’ve been putting them all in a tin and pulling three out before the gig starts…some nights the songs carry me off…I like to remember the writers, the sources, the subjects….. the chords, the verse sequences , the keys, every now and then I try and do a call out…..but in an audience of hundreds its gotta fit in…calling out one name ..
then I gotta remember that chowder…….I still see your bookcase every day….
Got full planning permission for a deluxe double cd collection.
One disc of studio and one disc of stage.
With optional bonus tracks from the box set 1964 – 2004.

at the moment I’m trying to focus on new work….its always a swing-swang roundabout as perceptions leap overnight from satisfaction to dejection ….I demo verses here on my phone…fri night’s hit becomes sat morning’s miss….
it was a lot easier decades back…I’d sing anything that appeared upon the page..there was no time for procrastination..write it (or find it), learn it sing it ..time to reflect was scarce….constant gigging left little time to fine-tune verses….
ironically, certain songs that were lashed out rapid have become popular..others that were endlessly caressed have gone unnoticed….but I enjoy the process, I never consider it time wasted, endless re-writes keep this old head occupied…helps keep me away from lock-ins and all night pointless banter..
but if all else fails, I’ll be onto that third box set in an inst..confident that it will have least one enthusiastic listener…fair play to you Bourkey
Same here Hilary, worked like a dream 😊
