Many congratulations to Christy on the Lifetime award. So deserved, a national treasure and a gent. Always appreciated by us for the message sent to us at a time of crisis and the time and interest taken by you. The song and the words made such an impact and gave us all a lift. Let the music keep your spirits high!
Congratulations on your well deserved lifetime achievement award , Thank you always for your great songs and music that will live on forever . Pure Genius!!!
Christy can I add congratulations on your well overdue ‘lifetime achievement award’ may you go on forever. . . .
I’m not able to get over to Ireland now, so can’t wait for concerts over here to resume.
Grateful for all the footage of you, and always watching the lock-down sessions. Keep well. Pam
Twas a grand night above in Vicar St.. making sure the rafters were tightened for next week.. some lovely performances.. Johnny Spillane “Under that old Clare moon”.. Stephanie Makem “Fairwell my love, remember me” were stunning. Great to hear Johnny Boy in the live space.. a wonderful song..some lovely instrumental playing too.. reminded me of Natives and Gortatogart.. enjoy the LLS & see you next week God willing. Kev
Many Congratulations Christy on your Award..lt’s great that RTE got behind these awards to recognise our own..Congrats too to Conor Byrne and the production team…a great night as always..wonderful to see the younger talent coming through..and drawing from the well..a handful.of 4711er reps were there ..before the Vicar St run of gigs.. MURF ..CM played Mountmellick on 28th Sept 2012…a lovely Hall.with a very fancy foyer if I recall correctly ! ..possibly other times also..Beir bua agus beannacht go Deo. H
…I forgot to add, Christy – my family roots are Mountmellick. Did you ever play there – no doubt you’ve passed through many times en route to Portlaoise/Tullamore? When my dear Dad passed I had a dedication to him on local radio and chose ‘Ordinary Man’. It makes me blub now, but in a nice way…at his funeral we had ‘Don’t Forget Your Shovel’ – his trade was pipe laying and your lyrics were perfect to sum up his tough work life but the soul of a wonderful example of humanity. God bless you for your words at a time when we as a family were struggling to find our own.
God bless
A great night in Vicar street….. what amazing talent is coming through , carrying the torch lit by John Reilly, Sarah Makem , Planxty , The Fureys The Dubliners……. and yourself Christy , such a swell of emotion and appreciation from the audience when you got called forward for the lifetime award. Such a privilege to be in the crowd tonight.
No Ordinary Man…
That’s for sure.
Hi Christy, hope you’re loving being back on the road again. I’m looking forward to receiving your new CD.
I was listening to a song this evening called The Man from Connemara, sung by Michael Frank O’Confhaola. I love it and my uncle commented that he thought you’d make a great job of it. As soon as he said it, I could just imagine you singing it. Just saying…
Hi Christy. Re-reading ‘One Voice’ and reminded of your time living in Halifax in ’68! You refer to the folk clubs in the area at that time, ie The Topic in Bradford. I’m sure you must have played there, Christy? The Topic has struggled over recent years with venues closing but has now found a new home in Shipley at ‘The Groove Pad’. Would you consider being ‘Patron’ – purely ceremonial essentially but it would be fantastic to also keep you in the loop as to how things are progressing? God bless.

Back then I was always very aware of The Topic in Bradford…That Shipley venue has a great name…I wish The Topic great nights in The Groove Pad
‘Rafters ‘ on Oxford Rd in the city centre had some folk gigs – but was mainly a night club,I was there for a wonderful Tim Hart and Maddy Prior night in 1971.
The Cavalcade was a large pub in the middle of Didsbury Village M20 – about a mile further out from The Golden Lion, Withington – also M20. Mr Appleton was a very tall guy, so a difference between the two affable maestros that comes to mind!
When Paddy Moloney passed, there were many tributes… I’m currently enjoying ‘San Patricio’ from 2010 – a collaboration of The Chieftains with the superb Ry Cooder + Linda Ronstadt/ Liam Neeson amongst others. You mentioned Paddy’s warmth and inclusivity – this comes through in the brilliant blend of Irish/ ‘Tex Mex’ music… the history of John Riley and the St Patrick Battalion (San Patricios)is powerful and very well expressed in Paddy’s sleeve notes (also a good wikipedia online piece on the regiment) Not only lovely music – but, for anyone interested in digging further, Paddy Moloney was a great musicologist/ historian amongst many other talents.
One song seems so little to offer someone who’s spent his life dedicating songs to people.
But it’s my best work, the very best I can do right now (I’ve been working on my consonants) of a song I love.
So Christy, this song is for you.
It was the folk night at the Beck in Brighouse yesterday.
We had fiddle, guitar, guitar, concertina, flute and whistle, listener, accordion, guitar, listener, voice and harp.
They let me sing lots of songs, about 8 I think, and they listened too. It was fantastic. Stilling the night, that’s something I understand now. There were lots of tunes from everyone and from the whole group too. I need to take the bodhran as well as the harp next time. They meet every 3rd Monday in the month.
Great stuff from John… educational for me…I was also at the Al Stewart and Steeleye gigs (both superb nights with Planxty support)By that time I’d changed routine quite a bit and wasn’t at the local folk club, so have just found out that I missed two great nights at The Cavalcade pub! Ah well…live and learn…I’m more than grateful for the time I was lucky to spend in the band’s company – fantastic music and wonderful gigs.

was the Cavalcade on Oxford St?..was it a posh club tending towards the cool contingent ? or was that Mr Smiths ? I recall playing at such a club and feeling like a fish out of water…but there were “horses for courses” and very few clubs had that vibe
